    Eveyrone making financer trap videos keep telling that 400...500 Wh/kg batteries are here next year. The problem is they've been saying this for some years now.
    I think 2021 the reality is still below 300 Wh/kg ... which means that to replace 1 kg of kerosine requires closer to 20 kg of battery - simply calculated, without auxilliary reductions and without regen. With them ... 15 kg.
    It is great tech to come but I find most of these vids too optimistic. The battery development at the moment is betting game.

    • @teddydavis3504
      @teddydavis3504 2 роки тому +1

      They have to be overly optimistic to get investors. Tesla still has never made a profit. Please fact check that point before you say it’s not true.
      It is all one giant, taxpayer funded, Ponzi scheme.
      The energy density is just not there, and is not likely to be. We’re probably approaching maximum battery performance right now, with a few very small gains left to find.

    • @andrewbaillie6291
      @andrewbaillie6291 2 роки тому

      We should consider a hybrid system with a small and efficient engine running at geared speed and maybe less batteries combined with capacitors. For now, until we finally get those lighter and more powerful batteries, that might be the solution.Lilium by far is nicest of the pack.

    • @genelomas332
      @genelomas332 2 роки тому +1

      @@andrewbaillie6291 a small but powerful I.C. engine running a generator system for on demand power, and small battery bank (for the extra energy needed for take off and landing) is the way to go..
      A craft like the Lilium would weigh an enormous amount if powered exclusively by batteries - doesn't matter if the vehicle body is carbon fibre or not, batteries are really heavy, and are really shit at holding power..
      But replace 80% (by weight) of those batteries with a small petrol or diesel engine (and fuel tank) to produce equivalent power, and that's a winner.. extra upside is as the flight goes on, the tank gets lighter so that adds range and performance..

    • @kohlrak
      @kohlrak 2 роки тому

      i'm a bit new to the topic, but isn't this specifically because we're more or less locked by regulations to certain technologies: such as lithium-ion? I've heard rumors that there's other techs out there, but we just can't use them.

    • @juhakivekas2175
      @juhakivekas2175 2 роки тому

      @@kohlrak Yes, but that is the problem. We hear only rumors, talks and promises. They talk about tape hydrogen and of various battery material combinations. But the basic battery power is based on travelling electrons where as the fuels are about releasing energy from chemical bindings and there is a huge difference between these.
      I have become quite sceptical about the batteries. It may well be that 99% of the tech development is already done. The reality today is about 250-270 Wh/kg and about 350 W/kg without cooling and up to short time 1500 W/kg with very heavy cooling bringing the paower density down again. Best electric motors are about 15 000 W/kg - this means that about 95% of the powerline weight is in the batteries. The new E-motors are wonderful but batteries are crap.

    Small energy density and weight of batteries will make economical and practical use of these jets marginal.
    VTOL is very energy intensive. Normal glider like planes have more of a chance to be useful in a commercial application. These "jets" are neat but they compromise on too many aspects of flights efficiency especially in cruise.
    Range anxiety will be a huge concern for the operators. Forget using these in an urban environment anytime soon. The regulatory requirements will make this unlikely. The manner in which air traffic would have to be regulated would require new regulations.
    These could be useful to replace some executive helicopter transport across town. After the COVID pandemic, we have found out that in many cases we do not need to be physically present to get work done.

    What stops electric airplanes taking a charge from clouds? The static electricity that makes lightning could be harnessed right in the air at any point in the flight. Recharge literally on the fly. Not even a pitstop. Could this work on boats as well?

      Short answer is: NO
      Long answer is: Definitely NO. Pilots are told specifically to AVOID flying into storm clouds for the very reasons you're proposing.. If they get hit by lightning, they can be damaged, and systems vital can go off-line.. it's not common, but it can and does happen..
      It would make more sense to cover the top sides of an airplane with solar arrays to absorb energy than to try pulling it from clouds..

    No idea how they will make a smooth transition from VTO to horizontal travel, in my mind I see the plane diving to gain forward inertia.

    • @genelomas332
      @genelomas332 2 роки тому +3

      The rear mounted fans are in groups, so some can be left point down, while some can begin the transition by rotating to forward thrust, the added benefit here is that the fans draw air over the top of the wings at a faster speed, thus increasing lift, (Coanda effect basically) without the requirement of forward momentum to generate it.. pretty tricky, but it's just physics.
      So, with this lift being generated by drawn air over the wing, the fact that some fans are not pointing (but pushing forward) down is mitigated out, and the vehicle begins to accelerated forwards anyway.. then more groups of fans can be rotated, and away they go.. :)
      Transitioning back to hover from 250+kph will be a bit more difficult, there's lots of speed and momentum to wash off before the fans can be rotated back to hover..
      Yay for drone tech and the tiny and very accurate gyros they use, along with super quick micro processors to do the number crunching.. most aspects of these flights will be automated which is the smart thing to do, but I do see a market for racing these (and other VTOL) craft on the future as this will push and expand the technology in the same way F1 racing has for the road car.

  • @ckdigitaltheqof6th210
    @ckdigitaltheqof6th210 2 роки тому

    You offered an great details to the companies claim of thus craft, however, most of the status don't demo of the rivals comparisons, for one , the craft has only been witness to go little over 50mph travel in video demo, also that claim of inner cities, its too bulk of wing span for that, its also called a "jet," but is all electric, perhaps in the future use electric combustion, because right now, it doesn't have even afterburners. So many small engines, even small, is causing heavy weight and doesn't support the vertical lift with lateral balance very well, wobbles often, because no yaw fins are on the engine, nor dies the engine tilt, during verticle.

    Lilium Jet is far ahead of the competition, although their aircraft will not be the first to hit the scene. Competing Vtol designs like Joby and Archer will be the first out the gate, Joby does have a decent eVtol, but its design was quickly derived with little consideration for scaling up. Its problem is in its design. It uses many rather large rotors to life a rather small payload. It currently supports 4 passengers and 1 pilot. 3 of which are seated comfortably, but the rear two passengers are confined. Unless Archer's Vtol is to support remote piloting, then it only supports 1 passenger and 1 pilot. which doesnt make it viable for commercial shuttle and taxi use as a business. It would find its use as personal ownership and air mobility of the light sports and recreational aircraft category, such as the icon A5. This would also apply to much of the Ehang and Volocopter offerings. Lilium Jet is the leading eVTOL startup/platform its design is completely different than the competition. Eliminating the use of many exposed rotors, providing levels of safety non of the others can match. And its design readly sees to scalablity without much rethinking in terms of engineering. Though they first prototyped from 2 to 4 seater aircraft, they now plan to launch with a 7 seater aircraft. 1 pilot 6 passengers. which from a business aspect makes it perfect for commercial use and revenue gain. Ironically although not of the same category, The lilium Jet see's itself competing in the same grounds as very lite buisness jet class. Of course it niether has the speed nor range of such jets like the new HONDA JET, elite series. Lilium Jet shares the same 6 passenger occupancy as the Honda Jet. 1 additional pilot seat appose to honda jets 2. never the less. regional routes would be of key interest of both. Small regional charter airlines may find themselves mixing their fleet options between those of lilium jet and honda jet and other turbo prop options. And Evtol in ones fleet would see to vast reductions in cost and maintenance.

      How did you determine they are far ahead of competition? Because their's looks cooler? A mock-up means nothing. Yes, I am aware of their test flights, but they have not shown any progress in almost two years, AND the test flight they posted has no audio, nor can you determine if the aircraft is even full-sized or just a scaled model. You say unlike the competition, their craft is scalable? They have not shown that either; just animations of scaled-up craft and again their mock-up.
