    Of all the evtol startups the lilium jet is clearly an evolution ahead. No dangerous external rotors, 2 means of lift, both direct via engines and via air over wing, which means less power consumption, Safety and redundancy far beyond the competition. ANd for all its benefits that sets it ahead and apart from the rest, its engineering is less complicated. as he mentions its scalable in passangers without drastically compromising the overall scale of the aircraft. its simply a brilliant design.

    • @Zachary77
      @Zachary77 3 роки тому

      The efficiency of the design is what gets me. Why haven't we figured this out before? Traditionally we haved used a propulsion device (prop/turbine) to pull the aircraft forward to force air over the wings. The air speed within the vicinity of the propulsion device is greater than the air speed at the wings. In this design they seem to have incorporated that added air speed into the lift equation. Thus creating a more efficient design.
      Now this is all really in theory.......? in real world applications, who knows, maybe all the added structure around the EDF'S create some sort of negative effect on the airfoil and create the wrong type of vacuum which creates negative lift?
      That's what's exciting about everything that goes into making projects like this. 👍

      @@Zachary77 they did, key word being "they" Darpa. and their Aurora Lightning strike XV-24 VTOL, which was something plugged around in the 90's but never seeing fruition outside the digital drafts. Though the XV-24 was a drone never intended for passenger or piloted flight. and it was big. and considerably different mechanically. using one engine to drive all its fans. but the general layout is similar to the lilium Jet. And your correct, the lilium layout with its stream of engine of the trailing edge of the wing does generate aeronautic lift, liftt by way of direct fan thrust as well as reduced air pressure over wing, greatly contributing to overall lift stability control and efficiency. when you watch the lilium jet fly about, that's the one thing you notice, its in flight characteristics, its stability. not only benefiting from the gyroscopic effect of multiple engines on all corners but also that conventional flight control added in. it flies like its on rails. seemingly not suffering much from air turbulence. and it shouldn't because its not fully relied upon wind of wing lift. its a brilliant design to say the least. When i first saw it, it took some time for me to appreciate what i was seeing, as it seemed like a gimmick at first, then viewing with more professional eyes, it hit me like a brick what it all really ment. The removal of the large rotors, being the first to standout to me. And from that alone the increase in safety and operations over its competitors of whom in many ways made an even less aerodynamically efficient design layout than a standard helicopter.

    So they're ducted fan engines, I understand that calling them jet engines might make it easier for people who are not into aviation and engine design to understand that they're more powerful in specific ways than normal prop engines but it's still kinda missleading as there are people working on plasma electric jet engines that work like actual jet engines do.

    Daniel's comment stands as a metaphor for life itself. If we knew in advance everything we would have to go through in life, perhaps we'd have some trepidation about getting involved in the first place. Ignorance truly is bliss.
    Also: Commercial aircraft certification is a total nightmare even if you aren't introducing a radical new design. Many companies have gone broke in the process. (SyberJet, I'm thinking of you.) Lilium seems to be going about the process about as well as any company could. One wonders if the certification process isn't too strict. But every time you board a flight to Hawaii or land on the helipad of a New York skyscraper, you're glad it is.

    They are motors not engines ! Motors convert energy -usually electric or pneumatic to mechanical work - engines convert a fuel to work . This whole misguided project is a scam which is becoming apparent. They are slick and the cute German accent helps give some exotic effect - the 'designer stubble' look is reminiscent of the cast of Das Boot where it was difficult to shave on a submarine --they look a bit like derelicts as it is but that seems to be the Gen X "look" . It is all about looking like something it is not and neither are they.

    One of the major problems I see (actually hear) with Lilium's aircraft is the very loud noise level and high pitch of that noise level based on their own videos I've seen (and heard). It's an electric jet engine and it sounds like a fossel fuel jet engine. Lilium really needs to concentrate on drasticlly reducing that noise level and the pitch of that noise level if it wants to operate near residential areas. I definitely would not want that flying over my house nearby.
    I've also read that there are other problamatic issues with energy consumption probably from running so many electric motors perhaps.
    And finally, I read that the cost of the 4/6 passanger version is more than twice that of Joby or Archer's 4 passanger eVTOLs, that would be another major problem.

I hope Lilium will at least make some money creating the infrastructure for competitors who have flying vehicles that actually work.
    The fact he talks about these high power ventilators to lift 16 people and can do horizontal flight is just most ridiculous thing anyone could say.

      So, a High Bypass "Jet Engine" is not a "Jet Engine" because it's not a "1950's Turbojet Engine?"
      Notice that very few Commercial Aircraft today, do not use "Ducted Fans" for "Propulsion Efficiency!"

    • @auspiciouslywild
      @auspiciouslywild 3 роки тому +3

      Modern passenger airplanes don't use jet engines either. They use high bypass turbofans. It's more like a gas turbine driving a ducted fan. The jet of hot gas contribution to propulsion is negligible.
      So you have to separate what most people think jets are, vs the technically correct definition anyway. And obviously a marketing video will always use the colloquial meaning.
