It's always worth watching a Des Ship video, even if you only pick up 1 little tip or, in my case, loads, especially upon the reasons why changing and feeding patterns
Very grateful when top anglers like you take the time to not just go through the motions but to actually say what they're thinking during the session. Very insightful and I really like your patient, clear delivery. Top job!
watched this a few times now, Des, along with the rig prep, and the pellet wetter videos, all first class info, really improving my style, thanks again, and keep em coming..Terry Gooderham, Mancot, North Wales..
I was on that peg when when I first saw him there and I always just sick to maggots when they get confident so u can miss a few bite and there still on hook but start on 4mls son u don't get messed around and on the bigger pools just fish meat on heron and on mooren fish fish 2mls and 4mls on a little cage or the new banjo feeder to the islands catches all the time there, I love seeing other people fish there because I fish there all the time and I learn different styles (I'm only 14)
Thanks for your comments Reece. Hillview is a great venue! Please feel free to comment below with any questions you have for Des, we'll ask him and get back to you ASAP. Regards, PI.
hi des, loved the video ,ime fishing a venue very similar this weekend ,ive been told how they catch the f1s is to fish across to the island cad potting micros and fishing dead reds on the hook and if get bitted out switch to hard 4mm pellet ,also been told to do the same in the margins to the next platform, would you start with dead red on the hook or would you start with soft pellet or hard on the hook ,in your vid you say its best to start with pellet ,cheers pal
Hi Des. What length are your short stop, are they also called short kits. I have two both 1.97m _ 6ft long 4.5mm internal bushes. The remainder are all SLK top 2. I enjoy your vids always find them helpfull as I quite new to pole fishing. Just one more thing please , I've found it hard to get hold of the floats in 4x12 to 4x16 always out of stoke on line. I talking about DS SLIMLINE .CHEERES ME DEARS.
Des after fishing your short line and then going across to the far bank. You still fed your short line, but looked like you were pulling fish from the far bank, through your short line area. Would this not spook the fish from that area ??
great video Des...there is a good snake lake venue close to where i live (monmouth s.wales) but F1's are from 2lb up to maybe 3.5lb plus carp from 3.5 up to 6 or 7lb. plus a few decent barbel. being bigger fish, would they still take to the methods you were using in the video? margins and far bank are 4/4.5 feet deep and about 3.5/4.5 feet deep in the middle matthew
Thanks Des. What changes would you make for full on Winter fishing ? Would you use a smaller diameter line only but keep the same approach to feeding ?
Des; "Hi Steven, I would maybe consider dropping my hooklength diameter to a 0.10mm line, but my feeding and main lines/floats would be the same as on this video. I may drop down to a 9 hollow instead of the 10 Dura, but I don't like to differ too much to this approach." Regards, Des Shipp.
Great vid as usual Des. I was wondering if the same approach could be used in a non snake lake. I have a match at Plantations next weekend and want to go for silvers as there are no f1s. I was looking to use pellet, maggots and maybe pinkies. What would your approach be. Thanks, Mike.
Des; "hi, I have fished plantation lakes a lot. I like to fish long with soft micros and a 4mm expander long for skimmers and big roach. then fish casters or maggots short for roach." Regards, Des Shipp.
Newbie question but I thought the 2 shots after the bulk was to make it look like free bait as it sinks? Then why slowly lower the line in the water ? Would the bulk not take it then the 2 shots gentle take it the rest of the way ?
Des; "Hi Alan, thanks for your questions. I use a bulk and two dropper for 99% of my 'on the deck' fishing. It just works well for me. the bottom two droppers are there as tell tale shot and register a bite on my float. I use the two droppers as this gives the bait a more natural fall in the bottom third of the water which is crucial.." Regards, Des Shipp.
Hi des great videos but when fishing bottom with ether pellet or maggots I would like you to be more informative in respect of are you tight on bottom-over depth I fish tunnel barn every week with the vets I'm always up against very good anglers so any advice would be very welcome. Your fellow fishermen John
hi Des i noticed you had a small piece of silicone on your maggot hook? is this done to stop the maggots going up the shank or was it just a hook you had previously used as an hair rig?
@Preston Innovations could you guys head up to like Catch 23 Borwick fisheries in Lancashire? it would real help because im struggeling to catch carp, so are many others who go there :D (with a pole and match rod)
I've fished Hillview a few times on the canals and there are some bigger carp in there as well as F1's so a power kit would be more appropriate that a match kit I reckon
Des; "Yes I would mate, this is my general approach on snake lakes in winter when targeting F1's. It may even be worth dobbing a bit of bread on the far bank at the start of the match. This can be very good for getting a good run early." Regards, Des Shipp.
Des got all yo think fishing dvd on the one were you are fishing with slop and worm up in the water were I go you can't use ground bait how do I get round it thank u micky
Des; "Hi, I always like to fish about half an inch on bottom for F1's, if the conditions are flat calm or if I'm fishing on a hard bottom I always try and fish dead depth." Regards, Des Shipp.
Rob Mccarron f1 is the scientific" name" given to the first progeny of breeding. And originally used for a cross of gold fish and crucian carp. But now used for most carp crosses

How do you know wether to prime the edge or not ? And I’m referring to the summer months ?
Hi des. do you have to put a bit more tension in the pole elastic on the short top kits or are the set slack? many thanks david
Hi Des, Would you use Match kits or Power kits with these set ups
I've fished Hillview a few times on the canals and there are some bigger carp in there as well as F1's so a power kit would be more appropriate that a match kit I reckon
cracking vid that Des...would you approach a match on partridge like this ?
Des; "Yes I would mate, this is my general approach on snake lakes in winter when targeting F1's. It may even be worth dobbing a bit of bread on the far bank at the start of the match. This can be very good for getting a good run early."
Regards,
Des Shipp.
thanks Des, how much float do you have showing when you plumb up for f1's
Des; "Usually half way on to the body of the float. I am going to do a video on plumbing up for F1's tomorrow :)"
Regards,
PI.
Is video about plumbing already uploaded? :)
Is your pole roost the ones with legs or without
On the far bank what length was you fishing at.
It's around 13 m to the far bank on the hIllview canals
Des got all yo think fishing dvd on the one were you are fishing with slop and worm up in the water were I go you can't use ground bait how do I get round it thank u micky
Absolutely brilliant Video, the standard is really superb. Just one question - Did you fish dead death with the pellet rig?
Des; "Hi, I always like to fish about half an inch on bottom for F1's, if the conditions are flat calm or if I'm fishing on a hard bottom I always try and fish dead depth."
Regards,
Des Shipp.
Thanks for the reply
what lake are you fishing there at hillview des
Shame Des is too busy to answer some posts?. For me he is the best as he talks like he is thinking out loud, so makes it real and you learn.
dose the fishing season go all year round
Yes it does for a majority of match anglers anyway :)
ok thanks my son loves fishing he hooked a big carp and it took are rig
what is meant by short stock please
all makes sense.
I have just started fishing again after about 20 years and I keep hearing about snake lakes what is a snake lake.
Long and Thin
A long and thin lake, one where you could hit the far bank with a long pole.
Silly question: What's an F1?
A hybrid between a crucian and a commom carp.
size xl please 😃
what size net
Landing net? Use a head that keeps the fish tight so they don't have room to thrash around and damage both themselves and kit
I assume I'd need a large please 🎅👍🎅
brill.
could do with a new suit df25
Large please
carp not f 1 it's not a car it's a fish
