I was able to opt out of algebra in high school, my junior year, because I was that unhelpable in math. At the time (the late 2000s), I don't think people really knew about dyscalculia ("math dyslexia" which also presents with seeing images backward in the head, and difficulty reading non-digital clocks), and people just kept at it that I wasn't "trying hard enough". My frustrated tears were perceived as crocodile tears, which further made me dread learning math. I think that mode of teaching is common in American classrooms, and has birthed a generation of chronic calculator users.

I am a grown ass woman in my 50's, raising my family on my own, managing all the bills. I have a job that requires figures and percentages all day. I cannot begin to say how much I can fully relate to Ethan. Math is IMPOSSIBLE for me without Excel formulas and calculators. I know what it feels like to be presenting an analysis in a web meeting IN FRONT OF PEOPLE and needing to work on figures in the report. Instant sweat. I don't care how comfortable and confident I am with the people or the data in the report, the second I need to do math it's over for me. Yes, I do sometimes have to count on my fingers. I barely made it through math courses in school. It's not confirmed with a doctor but I'm certain I have a mathlexia? Is that a thing? My brain just freezes and cannot compute. The more I panic (which I do) the worse it gets. If you add letters to the equation my head explodes. Why the F are there letters?!!!

I've genuinely never seen anyone struggle with math this much 😭 I am very glad that Ethan's career as a content creator does not require a lot of math. I genuinely struggle with more complex math sometimes so I completely understand the feeling of trying but just not getting it. It's a lot easier when there's explanation and reasoning behind the methods and when games like this just throw you into it with no guidance it can definitely be hard for those who struggle to recognize patterns and equations out of nothing but numbers.
Also that being said, this video was really fucking funny. Just watching the descent happen right before our eyes. Ultimately no one should feel bad about this though if someone judges your character off your ability to do math their opinion is shit anyways 😂😂

Dude math is something that genuinely makes me cry while attempting it, not even joking. Math in school was the worst. Like I swear I'm not dumb, my brain just cannot deal with numbers. I have adhd like Ethan too so maybe that has something to do with it.

I played a lot of coolmathgames waaaay back in 3rd grade because my teacher often let us play these during any breaks we had in between actual learning segments.
In middle school, none of this was allowed because “we gotta prep you for high school” seriousness.
In high school, we each had our own chrome book and they couldn’t ban sites like this because teachers used them so ofc everybody played them in the back of class.
Now I’m almost through college and I honestly forgot this site existed for a while because I’ve been too into other games

So real talk tho, Ethan, I can tell just from this that you're actually not at all bad at math. When you stay calm and work out the problem, you get the answer correct.
You're not bad at math, you're just afraid of math. And math can smell your fear.
Once you sit with it and stare at it for a bit, I think it'll be less scary and you could totally do it and beating yourself up over it is what makes you bad at it. I think this applies to any skill someone tries to learn tbh.

Ethan I know you probably won't see this but you have influenced my self-esteem in such a positive way with this video in particular. My biggest insecurity has always been my intellectual ability, SPECIFICALLY my math skills. I know this video was meant to be funny but it honestly made me kind of emotional. I've always been absolutely terrified of having to do math in front of other people, I'd say it's one of my biggest fears. The way you've gone about making this video gives me hope that maybe I can overcome this fear. Even though you know math isn't one of your strengths, you still decided to put yourself out there and make something great out of it. What I'm saying is, this video made me realize that I don't have to be afraid and ashamed of my disability. You're literally out here making money and entertaining people doing the one thing I'm most terrified of and one of the things I struggle with the most. You've made a profound impact on me by making this video. I'm pretty sure your intention wasn't to make a particularly life-changing video in this instance, but that's how I see it.
    So, thank you.

This is really weird for me because I also have ADHD but it makes my brain faster so math is actually easier for me to do in my head. However, it's hard for me to do on paper because my brain gets ahead of my hand, and I have to backtrack to figure out what I did to get the answer so I can write it out. In elementary school there were many times where I got a sheet of math problems, solved it all very quickly, spaced out while I waited for my classmates to catch up, and then missed important information because I forgot to space back in. So watching this video is painful for me because it's all mental math so I get the answer almost instantaneously and then have to sit through 30 seconds of Ethan struggling and failing to figure it out. But I also spend the whole time feeling bad for Ethan and empathizing because I do the same thing whenever I have to recall a name or date. I suck at history class and I usually don't know the names of most of my classmates and some of teachers.

honestly i felt a different kind of empathy watching this--as someone who has always struggled with math but still took advanced courses (that happens way more often than you might think). to this very day, i still have anxiety surrounding math--mostly when i feel as though a quick response is warranted. now even though i am always quadruple guessing myself and could probably give a quick (correct) answer, i'm always worried that i'll be wrong and then deemed as ethan put it "dumb" or "stupid" by someone who i want to perceive me as smart. but we're not dumb, we're just not math people and that's okay. happy 10 years ethan, hope for many more happy years. I'm horrible at math too. I used to be so ashamed of it, thinking my world was gonna fall apart. That I'd never get a job or a proper education.
Even now, when I know it's not the end of the world, it's still super nice to see that I'm not alone in thinking Math is unbelievable hard to grasp.

I relate to this so hard, doing math under pressure is my worst nightmare and i’ve hated the subject all my life because I would get judged for counting on my fingers.
I’ve memorized most of the multiples because of parody songs my elementary math teacher came up with (excluding numbers like 5, 10 and 2 which i’m a bit better at). I will never be able to memorize multiples, let alone more complex math.
None of ya’ll are alone in that struggle
