    Suckamaniacs, gather 'round for a new installment of Weekend Wankshop here with your good pal Uncle Ben!
    So you may have noticed i love Mastodon. I adore Mastodon. I dig Mastodon. Here on my channel, i've been doing song-by-song guitar covers of their immortal Leviathan record. I'm almost done with the complete album.... But one that i've gotten a lot of questions about is the intro to the devastating Aqua Dementia! One of my favorite songs they've ever done. This intro is a wicked use of hybrid picking typical of Brent Hinds' style. In this lesson you'll learn some hybrid picking basics and everything you need to learn this sick lick!
    tuning: A G C F A D
    Gear: ibanez RG470 , dimarzio titan bridge, kemper profiler, yuengling lager .
    I've got some cool surprises planned for the month of october... brace yourselves!

    Anyone find themselves watching Ben's vids when you're not even holding your guitar, just because you want the giggles?
    Leviathan is one of the greatest albums ever, and I had no idea you'd been covering tracks from it. I'm going to watch them now, Uncle Ben.

    Thank you so much ! I was playing with the pick only and I used to double the open E note instead of going back to the pivotal 5th fret on the B string. I was always out of timing and discouraged !

      @@GiovaniGatto Thank you, I have now, although one of them isn’t quite right when I watch the band play it, there’s a tricky sus stretch when you go to the chord on the first fret.

    Hello Ben, I love your lessons and they've helped me a lot. I am new with using an amp and I was wondering if you can tell me some amp setting close to the Mastodon sound. I only have Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble and Reverb and I am using an MG15CFR as my first amp. Really love your work man, thank you!

    • @GrassFed67
      @GrassFed67 5 років тому +1

      Old comment, but Marshall jcm styled amps are good for this kind of stuff. Boost the fuck out of the mids, turn the treble up a fair bit, and back off on the bass. Throw an overdrive, like the ts808 in front, back off the gain to about three or four, and you're good to go. This is also a good way to get High on Fire style tones if you're after that kind of thing, but getting good tones out of a budget amp is pretty difficult. Cheap amps are great for riffing around or practicing, but you get what you pay for.

    Hey ben just wanted to ask which pick do you use like very often? The jazz pick or the normal ones?

  • @mamelukkikala1160
    @mamelukkikala1160 3 місяці тому

    What's really weird about this intro is that Brent actually alternate picks it, while Bill uses hybrid picking in those little inbetween phrases. Watch their hands on live videos very closely. Like 0:36 in this one: ua-cam.com/video/SP6k1wiLXLk/v-deo.html&ab_channel=KarlosAizpurua

  • @excaldax
    @excaldax 8 років тому

    great lesson, how do make the distortion sound the same as the Mastodon guys?

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  8 років тому +2

      Man, it's all to do with the mighty Kemper Profiler. Bigass Marshall JCM800 with a little scoop, added distortion, and a little more high end.

  • @TheGuitarifier
    @TheGuitarifier 6 років тому

    I wonder why Brent elected to hybrid pick this riff. It's just as easy to pick it normally and Brent has a phenomenal normal picking technique as well. Doesn't seem like a riff that benefits from hybrid picking

  • @chipmunkattak
    @chipmunkattak 8 років тому +1

    q: in phrase 1 is there a reason you don't play
    d|---------0h3p0--------------------|
    a|-0h5--------------5-5p0---------|
    f|---------------------------------4p0-|
    (sorry if that formats horribly)
    i've always played it like this, which gives the same unison d but doesn't clog the open string with less than perfect hammer back to 5.

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  8 років тому +8

      Main reason is so that phrase 1 and phrase 2 feel identical. Open strings in the same spots, hammers in the same spots, etc. a lot of mastodon riffs are like this.

    • @chipmunkattak
      @chipmunkattak 8 років тому

      +Ben Eller i feel you, thx.

  • @williamkimball3782

    Mr. Eller, One year on a set of strings? what the heck am I doing wrong, I change every 3 months!! I owe you a really nice 6 pack of beer, I live in San Diego, what would you like sir? Stone, Alpine, mission brewery, ballast point?

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  8 років тому

      Crazy right??? Mine usually last a long time, but not THAT long! Those M Steels are something else man. I seem to have a pretty low-acid sweat content. My strings take forever to wear out and my hardware never gets rusty or pitted. Lucky I guess!

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  8 років тому +1

      And as for the beer, I've never had Mission or Ballast, so let's go with that! Just keep the IPA's and sours away, please, I'm not cool enough for that ;)

    I have a terrible habit of biting my nails almost exclusively on my picking hand, no real reason just force of habit. So having the assurance that this song is semi possible without hybrid picking

    • @third3eye3
      @third3eye3 8 місяців тому

      Hybrid picking doesn’t require nails, Brent from mastodon doesn’t have long and neither does Ben
