    I'm in Indian-ethnicity woman born and raised in America, and I can tell you, I always valued having darker skin; my friends were always jealous of my "natural tan" and living in Arizona, I never shied away from the sun and embraced the seasonal changes where my skin would get much darker in the summer and lighter in the winter. I never got hateful comments from other Americans (or Mexicans, or Jamaicans, or any other ethnicity I grew up with in the States) until I went to India and would hear all of these open comments from middle aged to older women about how it was a "shame" I wasn't as light skinned as my mom. The origin for lighter skin being desirable is because back in the day, those who were worked in fields as laborers were darker skinned due to hours spent in the sun, whilst the upper class worked "higher" jobs in offices out of sunlight. Therefore, if you're darker skinned the impression is that you're lower class, which is obviously bullshit. My cousin was extremely fair skinned, and I remember everyone talking about her since she was 8 years old like she was a prized pig being raised for slaughter - "she's so fair, she will get a good husband and dowry". What a disgusting thing to say about anyone, let alone a child. She was so controlled by her aunt who was determined to basically auction her off to the highest bidder, that she eventually ran away and eloped with the love of her life, a simple but honest working man who loves her and has much darker skin. For years, she only talked to me and my dad, the two who supported her. I always will be proud of her for choosing her own destiny and heart, and breaking free of her controlled life. Unfortunately, this racism still is prevalent today in India and I am so grateful I grew up in America. We have our problems obviously, but India doesn't get called out on this overt racism as much as it should because people are afraid of criticizing "culture". I suppose it's human nature to always think "the grass is greener on the other side" with Western cultures wanting to be tan and Eastern cultures wanting to be fairer. However, racism under the guise of "culture" is still racism, and needs to be called out by fellow Indians and non-Indians alike.

      It's definitely an East vs West cultural thing, to do with the perception of beauty. Western cultures seem to like the tanned skin (as AM M pointed out, people in America are "jealous" of her skin tone). But it's the opposite in Asia. Darker skin is not considered desirable. Not just for Indians, but for Chinese all over Asia too. Some of my friends won't go swimming when the sun is up because they don't want to get tanned. Parents will tell their kids not to play too long out in the sun or to put on long-sleeves to do sports, and there are so many creams, cosmetics and beauty treatments out there to give "fairer", "whiter" skin. This applies for women and men, by the way.

    • @amm6569
      @amm6569 Рік тому +28

      @@mezzogal Yes this is true. Same for some of my Indian friends who won't go outside on a beautiful, sunny day for fear of "getting dark." When I used to visit my grandparents in India my aunt used to take me to the salon for bleaching facials, which is/was a common thing. I was 10! I believe only recently the company Fair and Lovely stopped selling skin lightening products, or at least reduced production, after acknowledging the racist history of them. It's also a "grass is always greener" syndrome where we want what we don't have (fair skin if we have dark skin, tanned skin if we have fair skin).

    I am an Indian born and raised in India and i have exactly the same skin tone as her and i feel so sorry that she has so much insecurities surrounding her skin colour that it is a major factor for her while deciding her wedding dress because of how her lighter skinned grandma treated her. Colourism is more prominent amongst the older generations. I had some insecurities too growing up even though my grandma, mom and dad always said my skin is beautiful but I would still hear these subtle, irate comments from some random aunties. But then as i stepped into adulthood, I learnt to stop caring about what old fashioned aunties without a fashion sense said. I actually started loving my skin and i wouldn't have it any other way. All that matters is that you have healthy skin, tan and sun kissed skin is actually coveted around the world and even in India amongst the younger generation. I personally hate pink and wouldn't touch it but the pink one looked absolutely gorgeous on her.
    And her fiancé was so irritating, he didn't care about easing away her insecurities and telling her the truth that the pink looks absolutely gorgeous on her but rather he only cared about what his mother wanted. But I am glad he didn't push her.

Why does a man think of his mother's choices when it comes to something his wife wants to do. The consultant was so rightly annoyed by the man's statement. At least he came around in the end.
    The bride loved the pink one and glad she went with it. However, if she was concerned about her dusky color, which is beautiful, I would let her try a silver dress- the same color as the necklace she is wearing with the pink dress- you can see how the colour of that necklace is bringing out her skin tone.
