  • “The Howards of Virginia” is a 1940 film adaptation of Elizabeth Page’s bestselling 1939 historical novel “The Tree of Liberty.” The story is set in the second half of the 18th century, including the American Revolutionary period.
The fictional Howard family’s relatives include snobby Fleetwood Peyton (Sir Cedric Hardwicke), who appears in this clip. Some historical figures are also portrayed in the film, most notably Thomas Jefferson (Richard Carlson), who is a close friend of the main characters, Matt Howard (Cary Grant) and Jane Peyton-Howard (Mary Scott). Fleetwood frequently clashes with his sister Jane, her husband Matt, and their friend Thomas Jefferson.
In my opinion, Carlson and Hardwicke give the best performances in the film, most of which was shot on location in Colonial Williamsburg.
