If we divide "the world's Harmonica- population" here, there are harmonica players, Good harmonica players, Great harmonica-players, Awesome harmonica-players, and then, somewhere a few miles above all of these, there's You Howard..... it Must be Lonely up there sometimes. Words can't describe this, there simply are No words in the four that I know, or Any other language that would describe Your Quality.......
Howard is my harmonica hero. I've seen him perform live numerous times and am always blown away by his ability to come up with something new to astound me. I bow and am not worthy.
This is love at it's finest Performed from burning passion..4 the love of the harmonica and playing like Hendrix played the guitar...in the car ..walking down the street...even in his local grocery store. Pure joy of Delightful display of what it means to accomplish mastering harmonies Capabilities
Oh, my. Just beautiful, Mr. Levy! Thank you for evoking so much out of this simple, but beautiful, piece of music. You raise the bar higher than most can reach...
Some of the negative commentators are probably not aware of the venue. You wouldn't normally play this song in all those styles and with all that embellishment at a church worship service or in a liturgy. You don't wear a suit to the beach and you don't wear your swimming clothes to church. This was a harmonica convention. I have been to 3 of the SPAH conventions. Almost everybody in that crowd can play a decent version of Amazing Grace. He was showing a multitude of styles and techniques that skilled harmonica players would notice and appreciate. He was sharing musical ideas in the language that musicians speak. I might incorporate one of those ideas into my playing. Another player may latch onto a different idea that better fits their sound. Meeting and learning from very talented players like Mr. Levy are the main reason I have attended 3 of these gatherings in the last 14 years. The pros at this convention are very generous with their time and knowledge.
+Rex G I've never been to a SPAH, but I have to agree. I've heard the level of talent is high. And Howard is WAY up there. I've been trying work up his drone version of this for some time. There's a ton of stuff you can take from just this one performance. And as a harmonica player, I'm SO grateful someone recorded this to share with all of us who couldn't make it. And Howard for posting/sharing this!
The very thing that he wanted to play this shows that he loves it.To make it more creative and improvise it to the limit, itself shows his devotion to the art.
Howard is probably the best harmonica player ever and his skills are second to none but if it didn't say the title of the song in the video I almost wouldn't recognize it until the very end.
How are you DOING that?! It sounds like you playing at least two harmonicas at the same time =) Especially the droning part near the end is unbelievable good.
He is tongue blocking some holes in the middle. Then playing the drone stuff with the left portion of his mouth and he is playing the melody with the right part of his mouth. A bit like Tommy Emmanuel style on acoustic guitar.
How is he doing the duality starting at 4:43? It sounds like there is a second harmonica keeping beat behind the melody... I am not a musician, so forgive my terminology ignorance, haha. Amazing if this is only him doing it!
Howard?? Happy belaid Birthday!!! Your the greatest in the Univese""", I listen to you and makes me feel like a slacker but your my insporation"", Take good care of your self couse the hole world plans' on hereing you play way into your late 90's and live past 100 your music will be everlasting!! your unknown friend and fan and unknown student, I met Alber Lucasic back in 1997 and he tought me to condition my harmonicas and gave me sheet music he rote him self and made coppies for me to plactice,,bending exersises and showed me how to play my scales, and little rifs, and amazing grase, the simple version, happy bithday song, starspangle banner and the godfather theme, I lost the uther half of the godfather theme and can fuffly play half of it, not even comming close to how you play, Iv managed to learn my own stile, simple but everybody loves it and tells me I need to take it plases I havent cone yet, but through my depretion and lerking resentments from my past I manage to do house cleaning and try to stay positive through it all, thank you for that peace and some day soon can you do the star spangled banner, like you played this pease?? I love you and your music, your the best sir." P.S. if you find eny interest in my playing please contact me, your friend Todd James Reich aka-Todd James melodyman
Bella fleck and the flecktones ,"flight of the cosmic hippo",howard plays star spangled banner,on that album,1991,check it out, first time i heard ssb,on harmonica
How does he play chromatic harmonica on a diatonic instrument? I saw him with Bela Fleck, who opened for Chick Corea Elektric Band Saturday at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. Howard and Victor Wooten were the highlights of the band, for me.
He's the master at getting all the additional notes, some of which are ridiculously difficult. And I mean, years-of-practice difficult to get *consistently and expressively*. You can nail a couple overdraws here and there, but being able to get them exactly when you want....................good luck! Check 3:30 through 4:00, he plays it in 12th position (harp sounds like it's a low F, most of the song is in second position/cross harp/C blues, 12th position is B flat). Then go try it..................!
Definitely a masterclass in harp playing! Howard is a phenomenal player. He could've called this anything - with a few nods in the direction of Amazing Grace. Not crazy about all the jazzy high jinks - they seem nothing more than exercises in virtuosity rather than taking the piece to new heights. Can understand why the religious fanatics take exception to this - but Howard is just demonstrating what the instrument is capable of. I prefer it simple & sweet & this man has all the chops to do that - but like most white harmonica players he can't resist showing off...
Steve Fanger Why does it have to be a race thing? There are black harmonica players that showboat when they are around other great harp players, but I believe that you are thinking of the black blues players and not the virtuoso ones which can and do play stuff like this. On the other hand there are white guys who only play the blues stuff and never do this type of playing. It's not a color thing, it's a matter of who can play like this and not many can, black or white!
Nothing can surpass the experience of seeing that performance live but this is a great reminder of a magical night. Thank you Howard.
World's best harmonica player, no competition!!

He should have stuck to the original tune more instead of just showing off though
This was not so much about Amazing Grace as it was about the possibilities available on a Harmonica! Truly Amazing Grace to be able to play like that!
He can extract three simultaneous voices from the same harmonica. Amazing! The best player I ever heard.
3:56!!!
4:40!!!
Happy Birthday to one of my all-time favorite harmonica players, the great Howard Levy.
Howard is my harmonica hero. I've seen him perform live numerous times and am always blown away by his ability to come up with something new to astound me. I bow and am not worthy.
Used to be proficient on harmonica years ago now that I am saved I am trying to learn this amazing tune
This is love at it's finest
Performed from burning passion..4 the love of the harmonica and playing like Hendrix played the guitar...in the car ..walking down the street...even in his local grocery store.

I feel like this is what it's like to hear the soul of a human being..... Probably my favorite harmonica performance of all time.......
My My, I've never heard anything like this. Hard to describe how fantastic it is. How on earth do you get that much sound out of one harmonica???
Because Levy is one of the best on the planet, period.
@@seejayjames not one of ... the only one
@@seejayjames after seeing this, I'm not sure anyone is better
Out of one LITTLE harmonica.
My name is Eugene Huggins and I play around the S.F. Bay Area and I thought that was beautiful and I bet God loved it too.
He plays Amazing Grace with amazing grace!
Really nice mash up of styles and well executed.
The effort to get to that is enormous, thanks.
Amazing such a marvelous playing, mellifluous & resplendent.
Absolutely amazing control. Fantastic, thanks for sharing!
Virtuoso stuff :)
Thank you so much for sharing your music - I am amazed but even more, I am moved to an experience of lively peace thru your playing...

Best playing in the world
Great Performance, Amazing!!!!
My 3yr old granddaughter, plays the harmonica like a pro , she doesn't just blow into it.... she slides her mouth, and plays fantastic.
I've been playing since September 1970 & he makes me feel like a beginner.
John Bancheri I play chromatic since 1971 and also feel like that :) It's a fresh air technique and art on the diatonic. Amazing!
+John Bancheri John, he makes most of us feel like a beginner, myself included. But it won't stop from trying to learn at least one lick..........
The very thing that he wanted to play this shows that he loves it.To make it more creative and improvise it to the limit, itself shows his devotion to the art.
Truly inspirational
Stands alone in mastery. No peers.
After a couple of minutes, I just can't listen to jazz any more, but you have to admire his skill.
deserves a lot more than 210k hits
WOW!!! Just... WOW!!!
Incredible!!!
I’m just at the skill level that I can play along with you now almost note for note.
Výborné a krásne,Anika.
Awesome I pray I can play like that some day
Awesome ! Bravo !
That was absolutely amazing. I am still applauding... that's why it's taking so long to write this.
Tout simplement exceptionnel.
Incredible
Amazing Harp
Valeuuuuu bizarro!!! Grand mestre
Amazing
Incredible as usual ;-)
Howard is probably the best harmonica player ever and his skills are second to none but if it didn't say the title of the song in the video I almost wouldn't recognize it until the very end.
Genius!
Thanks for explaining the reason it was played like this,
How are you DOING that?! It sounds like you playing at least two harmonicas at the same time =) Especially the droning part near the end is unbelievable good.

the best
awesome THANX
It's all in the technique! It's absolutely amazing! I bet he could pick up any old harp and wail on it
Wow!!!!!
Very nice.
How is he doing the duality starting at 4:43? It sounds like there is a second harmonica keeping beat behind the melody... I am not a musician, so forgive my terminology ignorance, haha. Amazing if this is only him doing it!

Great performance with wide repetoire! Is that single diatonic harmonica and what key is that?
a lower key harp Low Eb to G would be very good for this droning effect
Does ANYONE know what kind of harmonica this is? This is amazing.
It's a Frankenharp.
I think it's a Marine band mixed with a special 20 and something with the comb I forget
This is a Magic show and wonderful tecnic that is all. He must have double tongle 😁🤔😁🤔
C👍👏👏
Which Harmonica do you use to play this ?
He explain that in this video.
