  • Instead of wood or vinyl trim, some homes are being constructed with Styrofoam panels that are then stuccoed.
    One species that we've found who appreciates this building practice is woodpeckers.
    In this video Ryan explains how he repairs woodpecker damage in stuccoed Styrofoam.
    Hopefully this helpful video can guide you in the right direction if woodpeckers have damaged your home.

    Our neighbor's 2 ducks came over here and made holes on 3 sides of our house on the styrofoam covering the basement walls, and it looks awful. The neighbor couldn't care less. We found them a new home. I will try that expanding foam. Thankyou for the video!

    Use "RED" tape for poly sheets sold at home improvement stores to mask the area. Add a concrete stucco repair but wet it with a bonding additive by brush. Sold for about $8 a quart in the concrete dept. apply with a water damp cheap brush (They can be washed) The top coat saved from the original application can last years if sprayed with nitrogen from a small rented tank. You get your deposit back when returned. Make sure the seal is clean and snapped on tight and it will last for years. Towel on or spray with drywall hopper, then trowel/ rubber float the spot to match texture. I don't do this for a living but my last 7 year job had me teaching 4hr tech seminars in 7 states. A lot of hotel time. I simply watched new go up, sometimes for insulation value, but I ask questions. Western fires and smoke have driven these woodpeckers East to the Midwest and further. Instead of food, a home is what they want. My Daisy BB rifle doesn't know the difference.

    Be careful not to use too much foam because it will expand and can press the surrounding stucco walls outward and cause a bulge which you will then need to cut out and then you have a hole 4x the size that you need to patch. I know this from experience. Use just enough foam to fill the hole and definitely use the metal wire mesh like he did here.

      If you use RED poly tape for plastic sheeting around bottom and sides of holes, it will keep the spray foam from sticking where it's not needed. It makes a cleaner repair. To smooth below surface, I use a 3/4" air file sander, sold a Harbor Freight. It makes a deeper field for stucco or modified concrete with a bonding agent. Then trowel or spray hopper finish coat and rub smooth to match with rubber float or magnesium.

      @Allen Reinap > This is not stucco, it is "Exterior Insulation Finishing System". It is a common mis-used description for this product. A 1" layer of EFIS grade expanded virgin foam is attached to the facade of the house for low maintenance, R4 insulation value and architectural freedoms to create designs that increase the value of this house. Woodpeckers are displaced East away from California and other States who make it illegal to remove dead trees, brush and wild vegetation outside one's property lines.
      Woodpecker damage is fixed by first taping around hole on solid finish using any tape used on plastic sheet. Use low expanding spray foam starting at the back, slowly fill the hole up. It cures with water so a spritz twice roughly to stop the expansion. Once on the edge, with center flush, stop wait 18-24hrs and trim. 1/2" metal conduit hammered until a hacksaw blade. Drill hole, weld / braze 1/4" X 20 nut onto handle, insert blade until tightens blade or use oscillation saw with 1 1/2" blade. (Options; air drill / electric W/3" 36 grit 3M type rotoc and grind 1/4" below finish surface. Take bucket of OEM material and trowel into hole until flat. Use $40 drywall ceiling drywall spray hopper and dial down volume and gently spay to match finish.

    I really appreciate this video, I am in charge of repairing our stucco woodpecker holes, as I am more patient and the one with “touch”. 😂 are all the forms the same? I bought OSI Quad Foam. I know nothing about exterior home repair, so I appreciate your help!

    How do you insert the metal installed in the beginning?

    • @Frontlineanimalremoval
      @Frontlineanimalremoval  2 роки тому +1

      The metal hardware cloth is bendable but stiff enough to stay in place when put in there.. A piece is cut that you can get through the hole and it kind of needs squished in there. It can be cut with heavy wire snips. It doesn't need to look pretty-just so that there is a steady backing for the foam to catch.

    How you get the steel mesh in the hole

    • @Frontlineanimalremoval
      @Frontlineanimalremoval  Рік тому

      Cut a piece about the same width as the hole but make it longer. Fish it into the hole and center it while holding onto it with needle nose pliers or the like. Then pull towards you. The wire will wedge itself int o hole pretty well. Trial and error on cutting. Alternatively you could use adhesive on the ends of the wire before inserting it.

    how do you match the texture of the stucco so the patch doesnt 'shine' thru?

    • @Frontlineanimalremoval
      @Frontlineanimalremoval  4 роки тому

      If using specific stucco repair, it has sand in it that should match the stucco texture when dried.
      Lightly hitting it with a damp rubber float can cause the sand to raise a little more, if your previous stucco has a more grainy surface than the previous.
      When repainting, some faux technique with sponges and other applicators may get the old and new textures looking just right too.
      But, just relying on the specific stucco patch material is usually sufficient for the places woodpeckers peck.
      Thanks for watching.

      Use a wet sponge that's just slightly more than damp and wipe it away with fast motion ,don't try to dab it .We repair this garbage all of the time .You can also use a pre-mixed cement patch watered down very thin.
