I'm a bit younger, and still fit enough to use my push bike and climb hills, but also bought eMTB this year for the first time and fully agree with you, a real game changer!
@ l am fit but hadn't ridden a bike in 30 years. In the gym 6 days a week lifting but that doesn't prepare you for pedaling up hills. It was frustrating because where l live l have many miles of trails close by but all required significant climbs. it only gets better every time l go out.

Ebikes can have a lot of problems, they are fairly complicated especially if mid-drive so I would recommend buying locally rather than online, the support of your local dealer could be the difference between a good and bad experience. For a standard bike online is not so much a problem but unless you are a electronics engineer the same approach with ebikes could fail. Also don't forget if you don't need a full off-road ebike there is nothing wrong with going with a hub motor ebike, the experience may not be quite as good but that experience may come at a small fraction of the price of premium models with mid-drive motors and there could be lots of advantages when used on the road with just a little light off-road use. On the road hub motors can feel a lot more powerful, accelerate faster and be more bomb proof and they can work just like mid-drive with at torque sensor or a simple cadence sensor and power can be controlled by levels, a throttle or a torque sensor that adds to your own effort. Lots of options out there.
I am closing in on 60yo. I have been riding Mt Bikes since the mid 80s I am on my second eMTB and am fairly addicted to it nowadays. It makes for great 'isolation therapy'. My first was a HT which was a good starter bike for most of the trails I ride. It was kinda weak on components but, easily upgraded and not too costly. Current eMTB is a full suspension Trek Powerfly. I have found it to be of great value with high end components and the Bosch system which has been bulletproof to date (almost 5000 km) Expensive? I suppose but what sport/activity isn't these days? Ya know what is expensive? The friggin' tyres!
I bought my eMTB with the money I didn't have to spend on gas after we replaced our old Volvo with a Tesla. And the Tesla cost less than we paid for the Volvo 18 years previous! The Tesla is a better car too. It's a win/win/win situation. And I love the eMTB I bought with the gas savings (Scott Strike).
@@ZipZoomZipI’m smiling reading your post ! I swapped my BMW for a Tesla and I’m saving around £450 a month in fuel and servicing. I had a Spectral ON from the outlet and have ragged the crap out of it since. I now know what it's like to be a fit pro :D The frame, motor and battery are showing age but it's still good, I hardly spent anything on it so when I sell it to my mate, I'll be able to afford a better one next year! For all you on the fence, just go get one, you won't be disappointed.
Phantom Big Balls Rocky Mountains Canada 6 week wait to get servicing on any bike here this year all bikes sold out by late May. Glad I do my own work lol.
If you’ve been thinking about getting an e-bike but couldn’t stomach the exorbitant prices (as I was) now is the time! Prices have decreased up to 50% on some models. I picked up a new Specialized Levo Carbon last week for $3500USD that was selling for 5-6k just a few months ago.
I have been seriously looking at a buying an eBike I've been dream of such things since I saw the first eMX concepts over a decade ago. I've followed eMTBs closely since and feel the tech has now matured to where its not eclipsing its self every year. But I've discovered a new set of problems. Getting a hold of the bike you wanted is seemingly impossible. While ebikes have matured it seems many bands still operated in a pre-internet era where you have to settle on what your LBS has in stock, phoning around or limited runs. In some ways its gone backwards when I bought my Super8 or Foes fly I could choose any number of colours now its black/black or hope for the best. Seems odd the colour you want it might only be available in a spec you don't? The EP8 delay was a massive shame I was holding out for that one it'll probably mean waiting till march 2021. As for fit its great to talk about, but finding some where to test a bike seems hit and miss for joe public. Even finding a eMTB to test full stop seems impossible (the only shop localish to me wants £85 for a test ride..) I think my ideal bike would be 15) to 170mm full sus mullet with the EP8 under 22kg and from a company that offer the cycle to work discount. That would point me at the Spectral:ON 9 or 8 but with a EP8 motor update. The waits killing me money is burning a whole in my pocket but I dont want to settle..
Hi Simon, my bikes 25kg and honestly mate you don’t feel the weight. Motor gets you uphill and it feels planted going back down. Most of all it’s fookin brilliant. Can do way more trails
An average enduro bike with decent tyres will weigh at least 15kg. A decent emtb with decent battery life will weigh at least 22/23kg. Your 14kg mtb and 20kg emtb estimate is a little disingenuous to say the least, and at the top end price point.
I was happy with my gen 1 specialized turbo levo to the point that I sold my regular enduro bike. until the battery died. talked to my dealer (specialized philippines) and I was told they have a backlog of turbo levo gen 1 battery issues and that they are having problems with sourcing batteries. not to mention the cost of a new batt ~USD1000 ! So I guess one should consider whether buying a new battery every 2 years justifies the perks of owning an ebike

Hey Steve, thanks for the awesome video. Can you advise please. I plugged in my height and inseam into Canyon which is similar to your data; 180cm and 84cm and it recommends size M. But when you did your measurements you said it suggested L/XL. Obviously you are a very seasoned Ex-Pro but would it be best to go M or L for me. Thanks for all your videos and help.
Great video.... But I have a Question? I’ve just got into bikepacking as part of my midlife crises 😬. However, at present I am riding a Boardman 8.6mht, which is a great bike. But If I was to change to an E-bike in the future, could I still peddle okay if the battery died in the middle of no where or would I have to push it?
Most modern mid drive motors offer very little resistance. I have a 4th gen Bosch and the motor offer doesn't an resistance that I can notice. I can however feel the weight. If I start without the motor it feels fine. If I am mid ride and I turn the motor off specially up hill it feels like the bike is made of lead.

I get that the mid drive is a better experience off road but price is still too much for most people , a rear hub drive conversion cost me £300 on my full suspension mountain bike, its heavy and cumbersome but enormous fun and reliable, good for both commuting and off road tracks. I am looking forward to getting a mid drive for more serious fun off road eventually but 10x the cost and more maintenance is off putting..
Wish someone had told me to avoid Bosch. Don't buy a bike with Bosch. 20mph limit but the true limit is 15. You are forced to hack it or dont ride. My Enduro is quicker. For 6700 I expect to be able to do the full 20MPH, and have room to adjust the speedo to get 3 more mph. I had the bike shop adjust the speedo as far as it would let me cheat and even then its still 3.5mph off and the limiter cuts in at 18.5 MPH.
The biggest problem I’m running into is availability. I.e. there are literally NO e-MTB’s available for sale right now in the dozen or so bikeshops I tried or online (in the Netherlands at least). I even expanded my budget from €4.000 max to €5.500 max but the best I get is delivery by march 2021 at the earliest...
Its true that Covid is largely to blame for this. While 2020 will surely go down in history as a peticularily bad year for nearly everyone, it will be remembered as a golden year for bike manufacturers. The sale numbers of bikes of all kinds including MTB and E-MTBs went straight through the roof when lockdowns hit all around the world. Except for price, I can't understand why anybody would ever buy a hard tail. The difference is day and night. Even when I simply stiffen my suspension it's like riding a bucking bronco.
Hi EMBN! Greetings from the Faroe Islands. I really like your show😊 I would love to get into your emtb world, but there are so many factors to consider. Do you have a video that explains the differences in mid motors when it comes to the “natural feeling” of assist? I guess I would like a 70+ nm motor that is responsive and does not have lag of 45deg rotation. Maby a stupid question, but are there big differences? Also, if I chose a full suspention bike, do I have the possibility to lock the rear suspention if I am jumping around on the streets? Thank you and all the best😊
Hi guys, I'm loking to buy an E MTB, Hard Tail most likely, Ideally I'm looking for one that can also do duty as a commuter for work and back, 6 miles each way. I can't afford to spend a fortune and don't have any real leaning to any particular make. One thing I do want is a air sprung fork not coil. Thwer reason for going ebike ias some 5 years ago I managed to snap my PCL and median Lateral ligament in my left knee (motorbike not MTB) this somewhat curtailed my cycling to work and back andf Mountain bikikg that my Son and I were just getting into. So Now 5 years later (I'm 60 now) and a lot less fit I really need to get back to some excercise. What would you recommend, Iain??
Size problem, trying to buy a new ebike and one shop says the Cube style 140 in medium is perfect and another says the Merida e160 9000 in large is correct, who do I believe? I'm 5' 9" tall and weigh 80kg
Viking Bikes are available in India. Mid Drive Bafang units which are great. Im in the UK and bought a MTB Pro before they sold the company to Hero. German built and a pretty decent starter bike for £2000👍
I have a concern that my battery will die in a few years, and by that time, the manufacturer aren't making legacy batteries for my model any more and the whole thing is useless to ride or sell. Is there any word on how long bike companies keep making batteries for their older models? Commencal in particular. Also, I wonder if you may as well get the toughest grippiest tyres for your bike, since (unless you're wanting an all day 50km+ ride) efficientcy doesn't matter with power. Like max grip assegai front and back, double down. Any reason why you wouldn't? (again apart from very long rides to save batteries)
@UCYxX0fqFsx0Nb5AXaRYUZRA Funny you should say that, but I know a man with a battery spot welder............................. He made my battery for me.
@@Devil_Inside_LV Unaware of that, it's more likely killed by esd or incompetence. The batteries are normally internal bespoke lumps, so there is no way other than buying another. So what will happen if structural and spray batteries become a reality?
Once again you leave out Rocky Mountain......They decided to design and develop their own motor which really defers from all the other brands.....I’ve driven Shimano powered bike and now own the Rocky Mountain.....Much better for my tastes. Would love to see a comparison between them all. Whatever your choice, they are all a great way to get out and enjoy nature.

At 139kg am i to heavy for an ebike? Will i get a silly small amount of miles out of each charge? I currently ride a rochopper and love it but i would like an ebike to help with hills and riding against the wind.
I'm 145KG, so yeah. Most ebikes are rated for ~120KG riders. My primary use is going to be commuting, so got an Cube Reaction Pro, figured that its not the best for commuting, but a mountain bike over a commuter bike is more likely to be able to stand larger knocks, as they are designed to take bumps, commuters really aren't - Any more than going of a curb..
Live on Pennines-we get weather-2019 levo bought when 20’s come out so saved £1k - I’ve done 6000km 2chains 1 cassette 1 back tyre a few brake pads and 1 spoke oh and a new motor last month with the warranty electrics are solid - go E!!
Hello, I have some doubts about the size I should get. I am 185 cm and inseam is 85cm. I am always unsure if going with an L or XL. I would like to have a long reach, what should I look at for my body? a 480mm reach at least? thanks and great videos.

I love my Canyon hardtail e-rig, for the most dangerous trails in-the-world: City streets. Avoiding every type of object imaginable. Getting over or dodging at the last second, potholes deeper than the Grand Canyon. Large objects on four wheels that disregard speed limits, stop signs & pedestrians. And swinging around those oblivious pedestrians acting like zombies, with their face buried into their smart phones as they go from intersection to intersection without looking. It's a nightmare getting to work. A Biblical hell, getting home.

Except for price, I can't understand why anybody would ever buy a hard tail. The difference is day and night. Even when I simply stiffen my suspension it's like riding a bucking bronco.
hardtails are scary and fun. thats the appeal
Hi EMBN!
Greetings from the Faroe Islands. I really like your show😊
I would love to get into your emtb world, but there are so many factors to consider.
Btw I am thinking spending around 2500 GBP if possible😊
Usual same bike Canyon and Specialized not changing it up gets a bit same old
They sponsor the channel im guessing. They need to be paid
Phantom Big Balls Yes must be hard when your given everything
@@baggsofadventures2838 don't be Jel 😁
Extremely helpful, sir please suggest rear hum drive as only these are available in India..love your vlogs
Wassup fellow countrymen!
They are just made up of 18650 cells, so you could open the battery and replace them - theoretically.
@UCYxX0fqFsx0Nb5AXaRYUZRA
Funny you should say that, but I know a man with a battery spot welder.............................
He made my battery for me.
@@kevinshort3943 Wait until they get the idea from laptop manufacturers - proprietary PCB that kills itself if you try to change cells. :D
@@Devil_Inside_LV
Unaware of that, it's more likely killed by esd or incompetence.
The batteries are normally internal bespoke lumps, so there is no way other than buying another.
So what will happen if structural and spray batteries become a reality?
That hard tail ebike grand canyon is super stealthy, good looking bike
It really is!
Does anyone know how you charge the Grand Canyon? Does a new bike come with a charger? And do you take the battery out of the frame before charging?
Once again you leave out Rocky Mountain......They decided to design and develop their own motor which really defers from all the other brands.....I’ve driven Shimano powered bike and now own the Rocky Mountain.....Much better for my tastes. Would love to see a comparison between them all. Whatever your choice, they are all a great way to get out and enjoy nature.
Rocky mountain don't give them free bikes😉
Wesley Seymour that makes sense I guess. Sure answers a question.
We've done a video on the Powerplay back in the day! Solid bike that, saw plenty of them racing the EWS-E in Pietra and Zermatt too 👍
Electric Mountain Bike Network yep saw it and it kinda helped me make up my mind and go for the Rocky Mountain Instinct A70 Powerplay. Would love to see more of them in comparison. Thanks for the replay.
Great video
Hey,
What do you guys think of the new propain ebike the ekano
Nice bike for the money!
really cool vid!
hi, im looking to buy an emtb but i am finding it difficult to see any decent info online about bikes for shorter riders im around 4ft11in inside leg 27in and i dont want to make a mistake in getting the wrong size when i order one due to covid is going to have to be online lol any advice would be great thanks atm im leaning towards haibike 40cm bikes though so at least they do seem promising! if in stock though too .
Hello, I want to buy my wife an electric mtb (so she can keep up with me on my kenevo expert) at present she uses a Liv Embolden normal pedal bike. She’s not very confident (aged 52 and 5ft 1”) having had a big tumble last year in France. What can you suggest.
Get a new wife.
I’m in the market for an electric hardtail what are your thoughts on the Grand Canyon On 9 please thanks…
Buy it if you can...5500km without problems
I worry about getting my ebike wet are they really durable for winter conditions?
I come from Scotland which is either winter or spring / autumn and it does well in the cold and mud
@@TribalmonkeyS so shouldn't worry at all with my gen 4 bosch?
Live on Pennines-we get weather-2019 levo bought when 20’s come out so saved £1k - I’ve done 6000km 2chains 1 cassette 1 back tyre a few brake pads and 1 spoke oh and a new motor last month with the warranty electrics are solid - go E!!
Yep totally fine. Most are IP rated up to 1 metre.mine has been soaked many times in the Welsh mountains no issues at all
Not in my experience
Rotors with 180-200mm radius? :D
Which size is that Grand Canyon:ON ??
Hello, I have some doubts about the size I should get. I am 185 cm and inseam is 85cm. I am always unsure if going with an L or XL. I would like to have a long reach, what should I look at for my body? a 480mm reach at least?
thanks and great videos.
Ads every 3.5 minutes is pretty irritating.
Step 1 - Sell an organ or maybe 2 depending if you want a decent spec.
Yikes some good info, gotta delve foe more if ti spend $ 😁
You should do a video on the 2022 Grand Canyon: ON emtb. There’s a scarcity of videos on that and it’s the only hardtail emtb from Canyon, compared to the full suspension Neuron: ON
The real issue is where do you keep the big ass box?
If I spend £6000 on a bike and I don't have a good time....someone's getting punched...;-)
04:30 - Did he say "SLIGHTLY more expensive?"
Buy a Turbo Levo - ride happy.
They talk about being green and going electric wether car or bike but fail to mention to be green you have to have plenty of the $green$
i was hype after my first trail ride with my walmart mtn bike, but seeing these prices, a broke ass college kid like me prob wont have one of these till im 50
got board with the adverts half way through sorry
Steve didn't u get to play with sticks when u were a kid😂😂😂
I want to buy
That Grand Canyon On is a gorgeous looking bike. Anyone got 3 grand I can have please?
Bugger riding a hardtail though full sus ever time
I'll wait untill tech better and they're much cheaper. I'll let everyone else make then better for now
They can't even paint the frame and the battery cover in the same color, real quality work lol
EMBN the Canyon advertising channel, All just marketing blah blah. The last unanswered question to Canyon Service was March 2020. hands off from that company and the bikes that fall apart at the customer's 👎👎👎👎👎
Those canyons still with the old Shimano motor
Well the model was released prior to the new one coming out🤷♂️
Where's Chris?
Just taking a holiday for a bit, he'll be back on your screens shortly!
can u use e montain bike in the city
Of course! They are perfectly road legal, as long as they comply with your country's laws! 👍
@@embn i mean is it better getting a e mountain biek for the city than a regular ebike
A Biblical hell, getting home.
you cyclists are so angry
😁 "slightly more expensive." Who we kidding, most of us could never afford ebikes .
One of these days someone is going to say what they mean by the word ''cadence'' in terms of biking !
Best bang for the buck Gaint ebikes check them out✌
(There are hundreds of places to ride) in this fucking island there ain’t
