The New Switch Lite Controller Is Weird

- 8BITDO is out of control and have released a controller that replaces the thumbsticks with directional pads. The controllers are themed after the Switch Lite with similar colors, but there is one big issue I have with them, and it has to do with the DPADs.

Can’t get joystick drift if you don’t have joysticks
so true, but aiming with a D-pad is gonna be a nightmare from now on.
Lmao facts
Yes you can still get drift.
*pic of man with his finger pointing to his head, looking wise
@@charliewhite3905 I thought about the same pic lol.
I've actually always wanted a second dpad in place of the second analog. They must've heard my very specific, niche dreams.
Y tho
@@godhero2566 dpad comfy
@@melon3109 If I was big brain and work for 8bitdo I would have make an 8 way dpad so that it could actually work very similar to joystick.
*cries in Circle Pad* 😭
@@maroonkennedy5552 guess what. They made a mouse this week. Its a snes mouse you might like it
I wish the two directional pads were instead two circle pads (circle pad from the 3DS) and were placed symmetrical at the bottom like the SN30 Pro+ controller.
I like it so much. The click buttons are the best and the separated directional buttons are fantastic. I'm a huge fan but I wish it also had a gyroscope and accelerometer.
I can live without rumble but it'd be a nice option. Those directional pads are very comfortable and good too. The size and shape make it perfect for travel.
Great feel and, even though I have larger hands, it's very comfortable. The input switch is much better than the button combination for pairing too.
Having been using this, the pressing-in of the d-pad is not a problem at all. The L2/R2 placement is also not a probleml. This is one of my new favorite controllers.
The circle pads should be symetrical, yes, BUT on the top like the Wii U pro controller. Having the right analog low is ergonomically wrong. I was devastated when Nintendo changed the controller layout from the Wii U to the Switch. Luckily I found a third party controller with both analog on top, and it was way cheaper than an offical pro switch controller.
I never thought about it but Circle Pads should really become more popular for controllers to stuff into a bag and take around. I liked the 3DS's; it's different from sticks but not inherently worse.
Also, sue me but I like the DualShock layout
Man, I really am I the only person on this planet who has no problem with both symmetrical and asymmetrical layout despite I like the latter more.
@@maike5307 I would even argue that circle pads are better than joystick for thumbs. They don't stick out either so the Switch would easier to transport when you don't have to worry about the sticks. I would love if Nintendo changed the Joycon sticks to circle pads to avoid the drifting issue and move to right analog to the top. That would make the joycons perfect, but that is unfortunately very unlikely to happen.
@@SkepticalCaveman Maybe there are / will be 3rd party ones. But then of course there's the question of build quality.
Imagine speedrunning doom with that.

They can literally use 3DS style analog, and I will still accept it
@Harry Pheasant that would be nice
That controller is designed for 2D games
A gamecube controller with a 3ds slider is literally my dream.
Behold 2 left joy cons photoshopped over a Wii classic controller
Its glorious
I feel like they could have gotten away with something like the 3DS or the PSP/ViTA's little sticks, maybe slightly recessed, hopefully with a proper click in added, and it would have been phenomenal. This seems like a substantial compromise...
I'd definitely vouch for that, but, I think the thumb stick click (l/r 3) would probably be a separate button, hopefully like the gpd win 2 for the button cluster.
@@adriandoesstuffandthings It's not that hard to modify the circle pad (new 3DS) to be clickable. Either the button is underneath the analog stick module or the circle pad's thumb rest contains the button. Those are the ideas I can come up with so far.
technically........ it has 3 D pads

Love these types of videos!
5:02 "This D-pad identifies as a analogue stick." Lol
This is 2019, y'all
I love this comment so much.
Ah, my new Smash Bros. controller is here!
Was thinking the same lol...but honestly I'm gonna use this for smash, cause I already play with dpad
I hope you aren’t a shulk main... 🤦🏼♂️
Monado arts would be a nightmare
In smash every move you make is a full sprint.
Dad_Shoes yep. Spellcheck got me.
Can we get this but replace the dpads with 3DS circle pads? I’d buy like 20 for smash, thx.
They should map L3 R3 to UP DOWN or LEFT RIGHT on the Dpad, this way its easier to register.
Design wise, a harder to actuate microswitch in the center would've worked out, it'd be funky.
Filing this once again under "controllers I would love to buy but are too small for my gorilla hands"
It's like playing Doom on the GBA!
Well now I want to spend 25 dollars
I bought one of these and I love the novelty of it. But beyond that, it really works well for side-scrollers (I've played some Cave Story+ and Super Mario World with it). And even though it's small, it actually feels better in my hands than my old school SNES controller. The shape of it just works better. And don't worry too much if you have large hands. I have large hands; and if I just hold it normally (not in some kind of gorilla grip like when he was trying to show how it gets lost in his hands starting at 3:42), it feels pretty nice for its size. The ends of my index fingers drape perfectly over L2 and R2.
The only real downside for me is that I wish they hadn't made the d-pads and buttons quite so clicky, but that's a minor complaint.
Bottom line: This is a solid choice for people who want a d-pad for their side-scrollers on the go without having to take a bulky Pro Controller with them.
I would have paid extra money for two 3DS circle pads in the bottom or motion controls to work as the right stick...think about it 8bitdo 😉 it will make this controller 10 times more efficient.
How Bout 4 dpads instead?
Replace the right joystick and left buttons with circle pads
I really like the idea of the forced d pads for certain games, even with the the "lack" of L3 m R3. I want this
This controller has "L3" and "R3." Both D-pads can be pressed in for the extra button.
@@thinkhector definitley learned that, though its a pretty wonky press. I still do use this controller though.
Best review of this controller I saw! I been interested in this controller for a few days, but I had no idea how the R3 and L3 button worked or if it was even a thing. This really helped, more than I thought it would. I'm still gonna get this controller, but after this review I can feel confident in my purchase for this controller. 👌
Turn it sideways and it’s a two player controller for retro games.
would be great if the controller was recognized as two separate Joy-Cons, for whatever reason
For anyone trying: you can't switch the face buttons around to make say x-input appear(physically) like the Xbox layout. The buttons are cut off on the angle facing inwards and there's grooves on different places on each button so the Xbox layout doesn't work.
I'm one of the three people that chose to get a grey switch lite 😆
I think so, most would choose a color, you strange person.
Would be my choice if I were to get a lite
I did too! though mostly because where I live, the other version was much more expensive and also we didn't get any funky colors. The mario one was like 70-80 usd more while the blue and red one was like 20 usd+. Though it looks great actually, specifically now I have used the witcher 3 sticker on the back to hide the nintendo sign lol.
If I got a lite, I'd get the grey one. I'm not a fan of the colours available. I prefer richer colours like crimson or navy blue.
Yeah, colors are awesome but the grey when you see it in person looks super slick
I always thought of what a 3ds style controller would look like, and this is the closest to my vision that i've seen online. I'd buy it.
I appreciate you always taking stuff apart, very helpful for questions about repair.
They should have made this possible to be split in half since it is kinda symmetrical. And they could act as joycons for the switch lite.
Should’ve used circular styled d-pads so you can actually use them for 8 point directional pads.
I think pressing down all 4 buttons makes since, if there was a button in the middle; you couldn't roll the dpad without pressing L3. I think this was probably the best option if they didnt want a dedicated button.
I think people aren't getting the true reason of this controller's existence. Half of the Switch's library is composed of 2D games. From Stardew Valley to Shovel Knight to Duck Game, and even the NES/SNES apps. This controller is made for 2D games on the switch, not for 3D games.
Another plus for this controller is that it works with the retro receiver for your NES/SNES classics, so you have the perfect retro contoller for those now as well.
What’s good is that there is button remapping now
I'm officially transitioning from the game cube controller to this for smash, more buttons means more better
wait what
@@midasmagnezone4282 you heard me
But every direction counts as a full tilt with this controller. You wouldn't be able to walk slowly, or use tilt attacks (unless you mapped it to the right stick), or angle Fox's up-B in between a cardinal and diagonal direction. Trust me, I've used a USB Saturn controller on Switch. D-Pads are not for Smash.
I think having to press all 4 buttons at once is better than having a fifth button.
It probably prevents a lot of accidental clicks. If you move your finger from left to right or top to button, it will cause a lot of unwanted stick presses.
That being said I can't say this option is ideal either.
Imagine this, but with 3DS-style circle pads
There's now an update where it can swap the roles of left Dpad with directional buttons.
Why not just have circle pads like the 3ds and have a simple cover to go over the controller for pocket carrying?
Maybe it's patented.
@@JohnnyMonke Well fair enough, but doesn't the PSP have something like that?
Because those are horrible
I've never owned or played a psp, but I was just mostly citing it because it probably means you can make circle pads of some fashion without violating a patent held by nintendo, I think the PSP even predates the 3DS if I recall correctly.
It still boggles me that some 2d games only use the sticks for movement, this is a nice workaround for that... Also *something* Champions TV ( a twin stick shooter) only recognizes 8 directions on your right stick.
Should change
two DPADS
To
TWO Dpads
Technically there are 3 Dpad when you compare it with a joycon
I want one with L3 R3 buttons on the back and the triggers made bigger. I just love d-Pads and kinda want an all d-pas controller like this now, just ya know functional for my huge hands
No Link's Awakening example gameplay?
That's one way to fix drift.
I mean.. fixing joycon drift means no joycons
(i kinda wanna point out I know many people with a switch and nor them or I have joycon drift lol)
@@zenv9180 anecdotal. Some people never had the RRoD, but it was definitely a huge issue thanks to design flaw
Spawn wave: They sent over 2 of them
8-bitdo: Sends only 2
I think the best way to go about implementing R3 or L3 would’ve been to set it by pressing the Rs or the Ls together at the same time
That is quite a good idea
Except some games might use that
Sam T I can’t really think of any off the top of my head
I'm another that would have liked to have seen 2 3DS circle pads, then a D-pad where the arrow buttons are. I think that would have made for the perfect portable controller. This is certainly interesting though. I just can't think of what I'd use it for outside Link's Awakening.
They should have done what sony did on the ps2 where the harder you press the dpad the more the game registers you tilting the stick
It's not really a huge deal with the "stick" clicks as the kind of games this is designed for won't really need them
I got this small sweet controller and it’s great! I use it often with my switch lite and I love its small size since I have small hands since it is so portable you can fit it in most switch lite cases and the Pokémon case I plan on buying!
I might buy this just to play 2d platformers or jrpgs.
Appreciate the tear down of this model. I picked it up recently and the L button didn’t click and engage like it should have. Disassembled it and it was a defective switch that just didn’t have the clicky mechanism. Going to return it unfortunately
So the D-Pad identifies as an analog stick? Looks like we have the first Trans controller.
I had no idea it was coming out so soon. I love how frivolous this seems, yet it actually has some use. Definitely going to buy the turquoise one.
I imagine that playing FPS games on this gives a similar feel as those games on the PSX era
@FieryReign Still dual analogs were used only in Delta Force and C-12 as far as I remember, plus never said that using a d-pad to control your character in a FPS wasn't fine, it's what we has at the time and I've gotten used to it to the point that using an analog stick to move your camera and such a complete bother lol.
@FieryReign Which is why I'm saying AS FAR AS I REMEMBER, dear sir, also once again, I never said that the previous control scheme wasn't fine.
Geez, learn how to read, moron lol
I wanna try this controller on Smash. Some characters could play better with it.
dude, Ryu and Ken would be awesome with it.
you do know that you got no tilts, like at. You can't walk only run. Which character could benefit from that? I mean even Ken/Ryu can't do shit with this.
@@kenmorris4384 You do have tilts. Just need to be good with d-pads. I believe up + right = right tilt etc

SpawnWave: Why are you wearing this turquoise t-shirt....?
Mrs Spawnwave: It's my new Halloween costume. I'm a new 8bitdoe controller that you have not seen yet...
Spawn (2 hours later): whew... next time,........ wear purple!
I wish they did something like PowerA did with the two mappable buttons on that back. I set my L3 and R3 as those buttons so I didn't press on the control stick.
They could easily map R3 and L3 if they used circle pads instead
They should update the firmware to see clicking any two opposing axis points as a analog stick click instead of having to do all of them at same time. Like doing Left/Right or Up/Down at the same time. Normally not possible on an analog stick so do it that way. It would make the click way more consistent. If you check for Left/Right or Up/Down independently as well, you are much more likely to see one of them occur when the player attempts the all button press that the controller currently recognizes. So it should greatly improve the consistency of achieving that input.
"They have what is, at this point, their smallest controller"
DID PEOPLE ACTUALLY FORGET 8BITDO ZERO IS A THING, I MEAN, COME ON
Maybe they meant the smallest fully capable controller
I mean like it can be used on any game
I'll defiantly pick it up for mortal kombat, hopefully people make skins for these a black mk11 logo on the yellow one would look sick
They should have used the 3DS Circle Pad or the one from PSP/Vita to replace the Sticks, instead of D-Pads.
Then move the L3/R3 from the center of the sticks to the back of the controller, like you suggested.
Also change the sizes of the shoulder buttons. Maybe make L/R smaller, so that L2/R2 can be a bit bigger. Judging by the comparison between it and the Switch Lite, and the Lite already being a bit smaller than the Switch, this controller seems to be almost Cellphone size. If it is somehow similar in size to the New 2DS, then it I will have no problems with it.
I don't see why they didnt put a small circular button in the center of the dpad for l3 and r3, but either way, for games when I need an accurate press of those buttons I just map them to the directional buttons under the left dpad. on a controller with a dpad as your primary movement option those directional buttons become free real estate. other than that i am somehow completely obsessed with the aesthetic and practicality of this controller. you seriously can't go wrong for the price.
Y U no cover hack ?

Seems hella useful for fighting games.
I am happy to get my 8bitdo SN30 Pro Plus controller coming to my place sometime today with Best Buy delivery from FedEx

I like it a lot, but I think my wife might kill me if I buy any more controllers...
i think I would be cool if it had a mode to work as two controller for snes games.
I’m glad it’s mimicking Joysticks. Now you can make levels in SMM2
Best thing about these is that they are cheap controllers you can give the kids to play with thus saving your expensive ones from getting all sticky/crusty.
5:12 thanks for showing the D-pad joystick
It’s the l6-bit Retro controller. I see it for those who don’t like using the left analog stick for platforming or link’s awakening. I’m currently testing it out on Ara Fell for the switch.
Ooooh~ Since I mainly play on pc, and by extension mainly use controllers for platformers and emulators, that actually looks pretty useful for my needs.
this would be nice if they used the same style of thumbstick as the 3DS
If it’s supposed to be compact, it might be better to recreate the 3DS circle pad. That might make it a bit thicker, but people wouldn’t laugh when they see it.
D-pads in place of the joysticks.
Buttons in the place of the d-pad.
What? Why? How?
Edit: The Lite SE is the controller I was referencing. This is a different controller. I got them confused.
Looking at the board, I kind of want to buy 2 and Dr. Frankenstein them together so I can have the first controller with 4 D-pads.
If you treat the arrow buttons like a D-Pad, that would probably be Dedede's favourite controller!
Nothing wrong with Double D's my bois
Me: So... are those analog D-pads ?
Spawn Wave : I know what you're thinking and the answer is yes !
Me: *surprised pikachu face*
More likely the R3/L3 trigger from pushing both top/bottom or left&right, or maybe needs 3 at once. No need for all 4 I'd imagine.
Didn't you cover this one already?
I believe he went over the specs when it was announced. This is the physical review for it.
@@AdelardRen oooh. Ok. Thanks!
Put a 3 inch screen in the middle and you got yourself a Switch Micro.
Better buy the N30, imo. It is cute too, smaller and more portable than the SN30 AND has analog sticks.
8bitdo messed up here. There is no L2 or R2 on the switch. Its ZR ZL. Lol
Jesse McKowen it has PC compatibility too but seems like they would’ve just labeled them for the switch as it’s made to resemble the lite
Can two people use one controller holding one half each? That's the only reason I can thing of for that strange setup.
😂😂😂
This controller has one fatal flaw! I bought this controller for games like Link's Awakening. It works great for it! But my hands have NO WHERE to rest or even hold the controller in ANY comfortable fashion what so ever!
I mailed the developers a message before it was released stating "Great! I'm probably gonna have to buy a grip for this too!". And it has proven to be, in every sense of the word "painfully" true. And until they actually make one, I'm going to have to get pretty creative..
Best use is to take the circuit board and mod it for a arcade stick for the switch
As weird as this thing is, it's both encouraging and depressing to me as a lefty.
Think about it: there are NO controllers that have the stick & d-pad on the right and face buttons on the left. So gaming is sort of fundamentally different to lefties. What's depressing is, I've already learned gaming the way the controllers are set up to the point that I doubt I could ever re-learn it fully even given a proper lefty controller.
Side note: yes, it does affect FPSs. I'm notably better at moving than aiming, and reversing the sticks brings up the issue of which side the face buttons are on (things come up like having to stop moving forward in order to jump...). So any FPS I ever really get into starts to feel extremely frustrating, like I'm constantly handicapped just enough that I lose some critical competitive edge. And why has no FPS ever once put in a lefty HUD?
Weird... I'm also a lefty, and I don't really have these issues. Maybe it's because I use both hands interchangably with several things.
But yeah, FPS games need to start mapping Jump to a shoulder button/trigger so you don't have to take your thumbs off the sticks.
@@obvfw Yeah I've read there are different 'types' of handedness, and I'm 'very' left-handed. I even realized from soccer in my youth that I'm left-footed. Ugh.
This is not their smallest controller. I have the 8BitDo Nano on my keychain.
They're putting 2 pads on controllers but what about a controller with only a dpad and no buttons?
For L3 and R3. Maybe pressing 3 instead of 4 could have been a better idea.
Is the R2 like ZR? I kinda want this controller so I just want to know :) it works with switch lite right?
yes works with the lite
Huge question, how is the d-pad? I have an N30pro and the membrane is stiff and has a deep travel. Which does not feel good. It also has the known sensitivity issue. If this guy doesn't have either of those problems I can see buying one of these. I love the close together buttons for fighting games as I have small thumbs.
Using a d-pad in place of a joystick is definitely awkward and limits the range of motion lol. But it looks like once set of buttons is trying to mimic the d-pad on n64 which is kinda cool so I guess folks could use this for closer n64 experience. (I'm getting by playing n64 emulators with my 8bitdo Zero 2 so anything is an upgrade for me right now).
This could be a good controller board for a fighting stick. I'm going to build one and been trying to figure how to make a right analog stick on a fighting stick for just playing modern games. This may be a good board for it. It will have all the same drawbacks that were mentioned, but might me a good one to tinker with. Think of having two Sanwa or nice sticks of your choice and easily mapped to the dpad connectors. Hmmm.....
Might be handy for Tetris 99. But not worth the extra money over me dealing with the horrible pro controller d pad.
Virtual Boy controller was very comfortable to me. Was thinking about picking this up, thanks for dissecting it for me Jon!
Yes. Thanks Downey.
Great vid Jon(SW).
I think the 8bitdo Lite Gamepad is good for games that should using a D-Pad i.e Link's Awakening etc but i wouldn't use with any Analogue style games tho guys.
It looks like a nice little travel companion too go with the Switch Lite too Play Retro style games and if there was a Grey version i might have picked one up.
I'm left handed, I think I could use that. :)
I hoped you would show the L3 R3 problem in action, rather than talking about it. Could you maybe make a follow up?
What kind of screws are in the controller, and are they the same as the 8bitdo Lite 2?
