This is what I love about youtube. Getting to see things like this which is so far from anything I know or will likely experience. I'm really intrigued by the two little trees on the edge of an icy shipping lane. Is it safe to assume the cameraperson was on the bank of a frozen channel or something?
If there would be a bank or ground of any type next to a ice covered sea, think how difficult an unpredictable place it could be. Wind could push the ice cover on it and pile a sometimes many meters of different sizes of broken ice on it. It would be a treacherous unpredictable place where the moving millions of tons of sea ice could do really bad damage.
@@just42tube It's hard to imagine for a bloke in the Aussie outback who's only seen snow twice in his life :D So does that happen at shorelines in this part of the world? Piles of sea ice?
Thank you for posting, the video brings back great memories! Fourteen years later, I can show my mother what I did with Finnpilot documenting its work. Kiitos!
Being on ice is much safer than boarding at speed from on top a shaky small boat in summer. Ships in ice will stop almost at once due to the resistance of the ice.
Yep that looks a little sketchy I see cold water million pound boat right beside ice that you could get smushed along and then a big twisting propeller behind all that very dangerous nope not for me but a great video
@@TypicalPeen High wind would raise snow, make work for deck crew miserable due to high wind chill factor. Wind shifts ice packs and where they collide, ice can pile up 20 feet above water level. Last but not least, high winds makes it too dangerous for pathfinder helicopters to scout ahead. I had to call it as it was.
More likely it'll take an half an hour to get turned around and come back for him, and that's assuming there's an area clear of ice where they can get turned. I talked to a captain of a big ship like this once. If he's up to cruising speed, it can take 3-4 miles to bring it to a stop. There's no emergency brake on these.
I wonder what health and safety in New Zealand got to say about this they want to cone the area off stop the ship and have four guide lines to the ship and have a harness on with cows tail and fall arrest 😂😂😂😂
@@tuunaes How dare you!!! Finnish ships would NEVER get stuck in the ice! Even if that could happen, I have it on good authority that the crew simply has to use the loudspeaker and yell “PERRKELE!!!” and the ice will move out of the way...
Hello Russian friend. Do you know your dictator invaded Ukraine and that is threatening Europe of a nuclear strike. As it is likeky that Russia will loose that war after immense destruction, Russia after that wil only be an impoverished and berated country for centuries. Do you know that your dictator rather than loosing face, rather than admitting failure, will rather destroy Europe and Russia ?
Why do you need a pilot for this ship?? ...when this’s ship can move only a few feet for an hour ....???...even the cookers can drive this’s ship with that’s speed
A hydrocopter, or ice glider, is a light, flat-bottomed amphibious vehicle equipped with a forward-pushing air propeller, which can also get on ice and glide on it. The hydrocopter has been used in the archipelago and on the coast during the storm and winter. In the United States, Canada, and Australia, hydrocopters are used to navigate shallow, reedy waters or rivers.
@@pvahanen I've seen plenty of hovercraft and jet boats, but I've never seen an airboat or hydrocopter down under.. Would you suggest a port they operate out of? I'd be interested to look them up.

More likely those are just cut and placed there so people at ship know where pilot is going to jump in.

Very handy when the ice is too thick for small boats but too thin to travel over.
