Loved this show as a kid (1960s). I think it was the best one out of all their marionette shows. Violent and dark, and if you took these same stories and filmed it with live actors it would as good as anything at the time.
Ever notice that the Mysterons always telegraph what they will do. I remember watching Fireball-XL5, Captain Scarlet, and Stingray. I still love these shows.

The base commander sounds like James Coburn. I'm also envious. I used to be in the military reserves and the targets on the ranges never blew up in fireballs. I suggested a few junkers, gas tanks half full, be set loose to drive down range - steering wheel locked and a stick on the pedal. - love the music @ 12:35
