South Korea was a one man dictatorship from inception till 1961 and a military dictatorship from 1963 to 1981 when the leader was assasinated. The Fifth Republic till 1987 was also a military dictatorship albeit aiming for democratization. And now South Korea's a pretty good democracy. Francoist Spain and Martial Law Taiwan are also countries that could fit this that emerged to democracy successfully.
The Move Forward is largely ideology-driven, giving them significant advantages over old-school political establishments. Unlike other parties, the core of MF is its progressive, democratic ideology, not one person or family. Even if the party is dissolved or members are banned, the new generation will rise and take up the mantle.
Youth are overly optimistic and rarely vote from experience. All about the “feels.” Look how the cancel culture in the West was started by youth movements.
I mean they already technically overcame party dissolution since Move Forward is essentially the successor to Future Forward from the previous elections.

Thank you for talking about our country. I can confirm that almost no one expected this election outcome. While PT spoke of the same old populist policies they used to attract rural voters in the past, MFP were very clear with their policies: Demilitarise, Demonopolise, and Decentralise. Our country has long suffered from stagnation, corruption, and authoritarian leaders. With such a large margin of victory against them, the conservative establishment is at their lowest point in decades. Half the cabinet were not re-elected including the incumbent PM who did not secure enough votes be nominated. I doubt that they will try to remove or deny Pita any time soon lest they want to enrage the people of Bangkok (Almost all of the country's wealth, power, transport hubs etc. is centralised here). While MFP is the most popular among the young, their support comes from across the board. Word of mouth was very influential in this election and many older generations voted MFP for a better future for their children.

To add to this, theres a not insignificant resistance to PT amongst the youth. People have just gotten sick of old faces, old tactics, old ways of corruption. Part of the reason why MF achieved such unexpected success is because if you had to pick between the military or the old blood, both of which has played a hand in 20ish years of stagnation in some manner, some people would rather jump off a bridge than have to pick. MF is a much needed breath of fresh air. High hopes on this one, they've even opened up a discord server. Who would have thought we'd ever see the day a platform directed towards weebs and gamers be utilized by a potential government.

Hum, a large part of house of representatives is elected through essentially a first past the post electoral system. There's a element of MMP too, but not enough for true proportionality. Not that strange that there's a lot of old blood there and corrupt politicians... I hope that you'll switch to a proportional unicameral legislature with time. You can use multiple multi-member constituencies with more seats pr voter in some regions if there's a need for more representation from certain groups, and use leveling seats to compensate for how that might skewer the election results in terms of balance between the parties.
For a country controlled by its military, its surprisingly free and fair. I'm sure this type of election outcome will not happen in Myanmar in the near future
They're already rigged the election with gerrymandering but still lose to pro-democracy coalition. They also lose the last one but the rigged appointed senate saved them.

Our country, Indonesia, also broke free from military rule in politics in the late 1990s. It was difficult, bloody, and arguably the effects of military rule are still seen today, but it's possible. I hope there wont be any need for bloodshed. All the best for the people of Thailand.

My country (Brazil) was freed from military rule in the 1980s, the military stepped down peacefully but protesters really ended military rule, and they got bad reputation until recently that the far right really likes the military and are nostalgic of the military dictatorship.
Indonesia being at peace is more caused by fear of the future. That means everyone competent gets along and pretend to agree with each other until safeguards like moving the capital get finished. That way the ticking crises of Indonesia won't be *completely* devastating when they need to get dealt with.
Additional info: If you got accused of violating Section 112, in most cases you'd get thrown into jail immediately without needing court's judgement. This's why it is such an effective weapon for silencing people.
The people who are accused of violating Section 112 can't hire a lawyer. The only thing they can do is confess to mitigate the punishment. To make the matter worse, anyone can accuse you of violating Section 112, even if the royalty doesn't feel offended by it. They can accuse you of the silliest thing and you will be thrown into jail.

Most of the country's people chose the Forward Movement Party to want to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code, which is a law to silence people who speak the truth in Thailand. Don't even gossip about the wickedness of the Thai king. Although the Thai king has sinned against many Thai people, there are capitalists from China and Thailand who support the military and the king who suppress the Thai people.
@FrozenDroplet That's complete bullshit! During the waves of protests a couple years back, about 50some people were brought up on charges of violating Article 112. All but a handful WERE NEVER AREESTED. Even the western propaganda rags in Thailand admit to that. 95% of them were served a summons, and while most were found guilty, half those found guilty WERE NOT GIVEN ANY SENTENCE. None. It was like the judge said "You've been found guilty of violating article 112... Go on, get outta here!!!' That's not to say there haven't been some cases with people getting unfair sentences for article 112 violations, Agon being a good case in point. I thought English in Thai high school for about a year, students violated 112 all the time. It's like driving over the speed limit; people do it all the time when the cops aren't watching. 112 really isn't about the royals, it's about national security.... though the government does have to keep up the facade of it being about the royals. When a prominent Thai is selling the country out, they find a way to get em on a 112 charge. As long as countries like the US and UK continue to interfere in the internal politics of other nations, smaller nations that don't want such interference will need the aces of their sleeve to do with sell outs to the empire. 112 is Thailand's ace.

I am from Thailand and voted for the Move Forward Party. We are also waiting to see if the military would make a move. Last time the military staged a coup, it was backed and supported by a lot of people, especially those in Bangkok. Oppositions are seen as lower-class political tools controlled by money and false political views. Right now, it is not the same. We are all sick of incompetent mil leaders, abuse of power, and the current king does not enjoy the level of popularity as his father. A lot of hardcore royalists who supported the coup, turned their backs to democracy and saw Move Forward as a good alternative of Pheu Thai. (Most of them still see Thaksin as evil politicians.) A coup might take place, but I think the chance is rather slim. Still, as mentioned in the video, there are many obstracles to over come. What is more likely is some people will try to bring down Pita for some silly things he has done or allegedly done. Move Forward took strong position on changing the fundamentals of Thailand political system and culture. And the results really show that we are all sick of old political games. (The results of some cities including my town really surprised me. The old power who rooted for decades got kicked out without a fight.) No one can stop the change now. It is really important to mention how important a landslide win in Bangkok and preliminary area mean to the military. The military couldn't done a coup without first trying to stir up some excuse and get the approval of the mostly middle class urban. Now everything has changed. Bangkok is now 70% pro-democracy. 10 years ago it was about 60% pro-regime. I'm not saying there won't be another coup, in fact , I am quite sure that they are probably plotting one right now, but it would be really really difficult to done a coup anymore because how a failure the last military government were. Nontheless, we have to always be cautious, reform the military as soon as we can, and use this momentum of popularity to kick the military out of politics. I think it will be unlikely that they conceding on it. They maybe will compromise the reform because the Pheu thai party still has some connection to the monarchy, but to conceding it to appease the conservative like the Democrat and the Bhumjaithai is, for me, unlikely because the party would broke the promise it gave to the people. By conceding to the conservative, I think you mean in the process of electing the prime minister, because the require vote count to pass the law is 250 not 360, if I understand correctly.

As an American I have no say in the matter, but in my opinion, the Thai people should not allow this, they are citizens of that country to and democratically elected him military coups are just undemocratic and unconstitutional period. The military should NEVER take power within a country, the military should serve the people AND the government not the other way around. But I don't think Thailand deserves civil war they deserve to be a prosperous nation.
As a Thai. Civil war will not happen and I am sure the military would allow the opposing parties to form government. The Thai youths are pretty good at persuading everyone including the military side. These days our political is not so divided, and we lean more towards compromise than, lets say, American society nowadays

Fyi, it's not even a fair election. They cheated but were heavily outnumbered by Move Forward Party. They cheated through Election Committee to change votes, doesn't count the vote on spot, delay the vote from outside the country so they can't be counted on time and many many things. It's NOT A FAIR election but the people have spoken.

Royal family really isn't interested in governing, thus allows people to vote for people who are doing bit governing instead of the royal family. All they seem to ask is respect. For context, section 112 currently allows ANYONE to sue anyone with it, the police has never refused to charge that person with the crime, and the court has never dropped the charge, even if in the end the verdict is not guilty. It's not just the harsh punishment of minimum 3 yeas max 15 years jail time, but the fact that it is systematically used to silence opposition with the legal system and bureaucracy. What MFP aim to do is to amend it so that only the palace itself can sue, and change the sentence to max 1 year jail time and no minimum jail time, with special exception for "good faith" criticism. It's not even radical, even still conservative, from the outsiders' perspective, but even this is too radical for Thai conservatives.
Fuck, that's barely a move. They should consider scrapping the entire monarchy to begin with. The entire Thai royal institution is a cesspool of old money, graft, and slavery. Conscripts are used as forced labor to illegally develop natural reserves for tourism purposes, the Generals own and operate tourism sites, and the crown gets a good cut of the profits. Elsewhere in society, asset holders seek to gain monopolies, suppress wages, and donates handsomely to the crown to gain illegal favors (like lobbying the Thai FTC during mergers). As a consumer, there's no way to boycott businesses with your wallet. It's either made/owned by CP Group, or Central Asset Holdings. Worst of all is the agricultural sector. Farmers get into unservicable debt only to face monopolies in the bulk market phase - meaning suppressed purchase prices at the first stage of the supply chain. Extreme poverty is the norm for farmers, and forced artisanal agricultural methods due to lack of operator capital means low yields and inflated costs for producing staple foods. The royal institution is the reason Thai economy is a middle income country with a growth of an aging industrialized nation. 2% per year is considered a good year, and it would be if we're talking of Japan. But no, this is Thailand, basically pre-war Ukraine twice as populous and tropical instead of temperate. And look at it! Ukraine is doing rocket science, producing turbine engines for export, and farmers are now making land drones to demine fields. With no offense to the hardworking Thai farmers out there, but there's no way most would even understand how to operate a typical Western style combine, much less convert one into a demining tool. That's how shit education in Thailand is. That's how underdeveloped and under industrialized Thailand is. All that demographic dividend being pissed down the drain by the royal institution makes me fucking cringe.

The military and monarchy are going to have widespread unrest throughout the country on their hands if the will of the electorate isn’t respected. In addition, that ITV thing is defunct for like 20 years now. Many, if not all, of first voters today didn't even born yet. The intention of the law is to prevent the politician to influence people through media. If they really use this law to bring down Pita i'm sure it's not gonna be a good time for them.

The minimum age requirement for prime minister in Thailand is 35. As a Thai, I'd be more weirded out for him to just hit the required age and immediately be elected. It's probably how liberal he is that people mistook him for his age.
To add to the section 112, it's actually up to 15 years of jail time *per count of violation*. So if they knit picks your "insults" the sentence can stack up pretty fast

The main reason that this election is very meaningful and significant to many Thais is not because we have just won an election (that happens every four years) but because we have been trying to break the vicious circle of military-backed government (as a result of many coups in the past), the long-held military infiltration into the democratic system, the conservatism that holds the country back according to their misplaced patriotism agendas, the economic gap that has been worsen and favored the top few percents of Thais including monopolies by giant companies, and decentralizing the country to allow regions/provinces to elect and form their own local governments and thus make local decisions, not simply Bangkok-centric, just to name a few. This massive win commenced years back when the Future Forward Party (one of the newest opposition parties) led these campaigns by educating people and introducing them with a new, hopeful political ideology. The party was later collapsed and banned by the pro-government in a usual attempt to get rid of what they saw as a threat, of course, to the military-backed regime and their entire share of power in the government. There came the Move Forward Party led by Mr Pita, who continues the mission, and finally the party won the majority votes no one has ever anticipated. Now what we call the "pro-democracy" parties are forming coalition to gain majority seats in the parliament, now with over 310 out of 500. Despite some concerns over the senators, who can vote for the Prime Minister this time (as the current Constitution grants them the right to do so), the forming coalition has high hopes that they can successfully become Thailand's next government. To me, and many Thais I believe, Mr Pita isn't all about the face or the look, but his competence, conviction, and commitment to his promises and the new days of Thailand appeal to us most. The fact that he was a Harvard and MIT alumnus is the cherry on top of what a capable leader he could be. We would like to thank all the good wishes from other countries and hope that you stand by Thailand during this critical moment in Thai political history.
Western media usually misses quite a bit of nuance when covering Thai politics. Which means they are missing the tectonic shifts happening in the undercurrents of the political landscape. Part of that is the complete inability to parse the politics of the '90s and '00s that preceded the coups. Because the major parties were a populist center-right/right-wing party, and a royalist center/center-right party. Which just didn't make any sense to outsiders at the time. The fact that pro-business Thaksin was ever coined Liberal or Leftist in the foreign media, due to his populism, when he was our right-wing party, was especially weird. Not that political ideology mattered over much when everyone was essentially a flavour of center-right. With royalist not yet picking up political connotations until post-coup and then again post-Rama 9. For comparison, a British-Thai pro-Brexit proud conservative will most ideologically align themselves with Phuea Thai for instance. But the undercurrents are changing. Move Forward provided a Progressive movement that was very much missing from the ideological landscape. It also ate in to Phuea Thai's populist mandate, of those who saw both sides as corrupt so you might as well vote for Phuea Thai to benefit your area, providing them with an actual anti-establishment party to congregate around. And the historical Centrists who voted military as a bulwark against the corruption/populism of the Shinawatra dynasty have been sufficiently disillusioned, and with no other choices, they'd rather back Move Forward as the new bulwark, even if they might not fully agree with their ideology. Helped by the fact that Move Forward have toned-down their (public) abolitionist rhetoric, as well as reoriented towards cultural progressiveness instead of the more divisive economically leftist talking points. That's about as streamlined a summary as I can make of it, without (hopefully) spilling my own political opinions in to the mix over much. Because no matter who I talk to, wherever they are in the political spectrum here, they all roll their eyes whenever they look at how foreign media has been attempting to interpret the situation through the western perspective with reductive labels like Liberal/Conservative. And FPTP does a lot to mask the underlying political currents to outsiders.
There's nothing progressive about MF other than rhetoric (if even that). And in many ways the military and company aren't in line with what would be called conservative in western politics. The western press uses these labels for Thai politicians simply to win greater western support for those Thai politicians and parties with a pro-western-elite agenda. As those in the west who are labelled "liberal" or "progressive" tend to have more interest in what happens in foreign countries than those who are labelled "conservative", the western press calls the western puppet parties (aka Move Forward and Pheu Thai) "progressive" or "liberal" or "democratic" to arouse sympathy for these parties, while they sell Thailand out to the west. Hell, Thaksin met with the Council on Foreign Relations the day before the military ousted him. I think using colors and referring to them as Red, Orange, and Yellow makes a lot more sense as the colors themselves are value-neutral.

There seems to be a lot of surprise about Move Forward's success but I am not sure why. I have just been over there and everyone I spoke to was a Move Forward supporter and quite vehemently in some cases.
For anyone who’s unsure about the senators, the reason they might have less power than they once had is that they can’t vote for a policy, just prime minister. Usually when the voices are almost enough to win on the military side they will convince some smaller parties to join them and some representatives from the opposition. However with this large of a margin it’s unlikely they will be able to pull enough thus even if they elect tehir old prime minister out the representative can immediatly do a vote of no confidence, which th senators can’t participate in and kick out the prime minister.

I'm a first voter and I mark on a ballot with the commitment that the democracy in Thailand that has lost for almost 1 decade will be back to the people again. but the house of senate is our main obstacle...and If the majority can form a government as it should, I hope that every issues in our nation must be fixed by the civil government management not using a force from some political party or military forces. No matter Move Forward Party with able to run a government or not, I believed this is a new chapter for Thai political landscape. In Thailand, normally politician buy votes and that's used to be the only way to win a seat especially in the rural area. And for the party list MP seat, people tend to vote for the most populist policy regardless the policy even feasible or not and give zero F regarding political ideology. So it is a formula for Thai election, buying vote in rural area + extreme populist policy. But Move Forward Party they do not have that amount of money to buy vote and their policy focused on political reform than populist, but they still win the election. So even some of my friends who is on the right wing while Move Forward Party is on the left, they are still happy that Move Forward Party win this election. This is a showcase that any political party can win without buying vote and we hope that we will have several more political party like this emerge in the coming years. This does spark a lot of hope for most Thai except for the far right.
The military won't allow anything other than people who advance their interests, it is as corrupt as can be. I admire the Thai people, they are always willing to try for reform, even though they have been trying for decades.
A small language quibble: the “Move Forward” party leader’s name is พิธา which is pronounced “pi-taa”, not Peter. (And a slight upswing in your voice on the “pi” syllable.
You know, I don't think the military would launch a coup per se. I am sure the Thai military have been keeping a close eye in what's going on in Myanmar, a country that experienced a coup in 2021 and it's been chaos ever since. I think the Thai military will try to be more discrete, maybe try to engineer events behind the scenes, make it harder for the new government to pursue its policies or coerce them in some way.
Military coup d'etat is not as easy as you might think, as there is pattern and method in doing it. Before anything, there is a last resort mechanism the establishment can use to stop this government forming if the senate doesn't do it: the constitutional court. Every ruling party in Thailand has been dissolved by this court, including the opposition Future Forward in 2020 and the two predecessors of Pheu Thai. First thing, a coup d'etat has never happened earlier than 2-3 years of an elected government, so this is valuable time slot for this government (if they can form it) to do the sweeping changes. Secondly, a coup d'etat in Thailand can only happen when there are a group of protesters calling for it (this is mostly the case for post-Thaksin politics). Thirdly, there is a theory in Thai politics that the urban core and the rural area play different roles. The rural area elects a government, and the urban core overthrows it. This time, both the urban core and the rural area voted for this red and orange coalition. That is the hefty price Pita is talking about.

South Korea was a one man dictatorship from inception till 1961 and a military dictatorship from 1963 to 1981 when the leader was assasinated. The Fifth Republic till 1987 was also a military dictatorship albeit aiming for democratization. And now South Korea's a pretty good democracy.
Francoist Spain and Martial Law Taiwan are also countries that could fit this that emerged to democracy successfully.
If they take over again people have to fight back just like Myanmar. There will be sacrifice but for the future gen they have to.
The Move Forward is largely ideology-driven, giving them significant advantages over old-school political establishments. Unlike other parties, the core of MF is its progressive, democratic ideology, not one person or family. Even if the party is dissolved or members are banned, the new generation will rise and take up the mantle.
Youth are overly optimistic and rarely vote from experience. All about the “feels.” Look how the cancel culture in the West was started by youth movements.
I mean they already technically overcame party dissolution since Move Forward is essentially the successor to Future Forward from the previous elections.
Being largely ideology-driven just makes it easier for the military to wait until it inevitably messes up.
Thailand is looking a lot like America in 2008. "Hope, change, youth, progress." The winner might as well call himself "Thai Obama." Get ready for your cultural institutions to be destroyed. Thank you for talking about our country. I can confirm that almost no one expected this election outcome. While PT spoke of the same old populist policies they used to attract rural voters in the past, MFP were very clear with their policies: Demilitarise, Demonopolise, and Decentralise.
Our country has long suffered from stagnation, corruption, and authoritarian leaders. With such a large margin of victory against them, the conservative establishment is at their lowest point in decades. Half the cabinet were not re-elected including the incumbent PM who did not secure enough votes be nominated. I doubt that they will try to remove or deny Pita any time soon lest they want to enrage the people of Bangkok (Almost all of the country's wealth, power, transport hubs etc. is centralised here).
While MFP is the most popular among the young, their support comes from across the board. Word of mouth was very influential in this election and many older generations voted MFP for a better future for their children.

To add to this, theres a not insignificant resistance to PT amongst the youth. People have just gotten sick of old faces, old tactics, old ways of corruption. Part of the reason why MF achieved such unexpected success is because if you had to pick between the military or the old blood, both of which has played a hand in 20ish years of stagnation in some manner, some people would rather jump off a bridge than have to pick.
MF is a much needed breath of fresh air. High hopes on this one, they've even opened up a discord server. Who would have thought we'd ever see the day a platform directed towards weebs and gamers be utilized by a potential government.

You can use multiple multi-member constituencies with more seats pr voter in some regions if there's a need for more representation from certain groups, and use leveling seats to compensate for how that might skewer the election results in terms of balance between the parties.
For a country controlled by its military, its surprisingly free and fair. I'm sure this type of election outcome will not happen in Myanmar in the near future

Our country, Indonesia, also broke free from military rule in politics in the late 1990s. It was difficult, bloody, and arguably the effects of military rule are still seen today, but it's possible. I hope there wont be any need for bloodshed.

My country (Brazil) was freed from military rule in the 1980s, the military stepped down peacefully but protesters really ended military rule, and they got bad reputation until recently that the far right really likes the military and are nostalgic of the military dictatorship.
Indonesia being at peace is more caused by fear of the future. That means everyone competent gets along and pretend to agree with each other until safeguards like moving the capital get finished.
That way the ticking crises of Indonesia won't be *completely* devastating when they need to get dealt with.
Additional info: If you got accused of violating Section 112, in most cases you'd get thrown into jail immediately without needing court's judgement. This's why it is such an effective weapon for silencing people.
The people who are accused of violating Section 112 can't hire a lawyer. The only thing they can do is confess to mitigate the punishment. To make the matter worse, anyone can accuse you of violating Section 112, even if the royalty doesn't feel offended by it.
They can accuse you of the silliest thing and you will be thrown into jail.

@FrozenDroplet That's complete bullshit! During the waves of protests a couple years back, about 50some people were brought up on charges of violating Article 112. All but a handful WERE NEVER AREESTED. Even the western propaganda rags in Thailand admit to that. 95% of them were served a summons, and while most were found guilty, half those found guilty WERE NOT GIVEN ANY SENTENCE. None. It was like the judge said "You've been found guilty of violating article 112... Go on, get outta here!!!' That's not to say there haven't been some cases with people getting unfair sentences for article 112 violations, Agon being a good case in point.
I thought English in Thai high school for about a year, students violated 112 all the time. It's like driving over the speed limit; people do it all the time when the cops aren't watching.
112 really isn't about the royals, it's about national security.... though the government does have to keep up the facade of it being about the royals. When a prominent Thai is selling the country out, they find a way to get em on a 112 charge. Last time the military staged a coup, it was backed and supported by a lot of people, especially those in Bangkok.
Oppositions are seen as lower-class political tools controlled by money and false political views.
Right now, it is not the same. We are all sick of incompetent mil leaders, abuse of power, and the current king does not enjoy the level of popularity as his father.
A lot of hardcore royalists who supported the coup, turned their backs to democracy and saw Move Forward as a good alternative of Pheu Thai. (Most of them still see Thaksin as evil politicians.)
A coup might take place, but I think the chance is rather slim. Still, as mentioned in the video, there are many obstracles to over come.
What is more likely is some people will try to bring down Pita for some silly things he has done or allegedly done.
Move Forward took strong position on changing the fundamentals of Thailand political system and culture.
And the results really show that we are all sick of old political games.
(The results of some cities including my town really surprised me. The old power who rooted for decades got kicked out without a fight.)

It is really important to mention how important a landslide win in Bangkok and preliminary area mean to the military. The military couldn't done a coup without first trying to stir up some excuse and get the approval of the mostly middle class urban. Now everything has changed. Bangkok is now 70% pro-democracy. 10 years ago it was about 60% pro-regime. I'm not saying there won't be another coup, in fact , I am quite sure that they are probably plotting one right now, but it would be really really difficult to done a coup anymore because how a failure the last military government were. Nontheless, we have to always be cautious, reform the military as soon as we can, and use this momentum of popularity to kick the military out of politics. I think it will be unlikely that they conceding on it. This is a question for people from Thailand, if the military doesn't allow you to form the government after winning the election do you think there is a chance of a civil war happening?
As an American I have no say in the matter, but in my opinion, the Thai people should not allow this, they are citizens of that country to and democratically elected him military coups are just undemocratic and unconstitutional period.
The military should NEVER take power within a country, the military should serve the people AND the government not the other way around.

Fyi, it's not even a fair election. They cheated but were heavily outnumbered by Move Forward Party. They cheated through Election Committee to change votes, doesn't count the vote on spot, delay the vote from outside the country so they can't be counted on time and many many things. It's NOT A FAIR election but the people have spoken.

Royal family really isn't interested in governing, thus allows people to vote for people who are doing bit governing instead of the royal family. All they seem to ask is respect. Meanwhile since entire army is in control of royal family, they could easily wipe out the opposition without any resistance. Yet they haven't done so.
Meanwhile Thailand is one of the free Asian countries even though royalty is in power.

For context, section 112 currently allows ANYONE to sue anyone with it, the police has never refused to charge that person with the crime, and the court has never dropped the charge, even if in the end the verdict is not guilty. It's not just the harsh punishment of minimum 3 yeas max 15 years jail time, but the fact that it is systematically used to silence opposition with the legal system and bureaucracy. What MFP aim to do is to amend it so that only the palace itself can sue, and change the sentence to max 1 year jail time and no minimum jail time, with special exception for "good faith" criticism. It's not even radical, even still conservative, from the outsiders' perspective, but even this is too radical for Thai conservatives.
Fuck, that's barely a move. They should consider scrapping the entire monarchy to begin with.
The entire Thai royal institution is a cesspool of old money, graft, and slavery. Conscripts are used as forced labor to illegally develop natural reserves for tourism purposes, the Generals own and operate tourism sites, and the crown gets a good cut of the profits.
Elsewhere in society, asset holders seek to gain monopolies, suppress wages, and donates handsomely to the crown to gain illegal favors (like lobbying the Thai FTC during mergers). As a consumer, there's no way to boycott businesses with your wallet. It's either made/owned by CP Group, or Central Asset Holdings.
Worst of all is the agricultural sector. Farmers get into unservicable debt only to face monopolies in the bulk market phase - meaning suppressed purchase prices at the first stage of the supply chain. Extreme poverty is the norm for farmers, and forced artisanal agricultural methods due to lack of operator capital means low yields and inflated costs for producing staple foods.
The royal institution is the reason Thai economy is a middle income country with a growth of an aging industrialized nation.
2% per year is considered a good year, and it would be if we're talking of Japan. But no, this is Thailand, basically pre-war Ukraine twice as populous and tropical instead of temperate. And look at it! Ukraine is doing rocket science, producing turbine engines for export, and farmers are now making land drones to demine fields. With no offense to the hardworking Thai farmers out there, but there's no way most would even understand how to operate a typical Western style combine, much less convert one into a demining tool. That's how shit education in Thailand is. That's how underdeveloped and under industrialized Thailand is.
All that demographic dividend being pissed down the drain by the royal institution makes me fucking cringe.

The minimum age requirement for prime minister in Thailand is 35. As a Thai, I'd be more weirded out for him to just hit the required age and immediately be elected. It's probably how liberal he is that people mistook him for his age.

The main reason that this election is very meaningful and significant to many Thais is not because we have just won an election (that happens every four years) but because we have been trying to break the vicious circle of military-backed government (as a result of many coups in the past), the long-held military infiltration into the democratic system, the conservatism that holds the country back according to their misplaced patriotism agendas, the economic gap that has been worsen and favored the top few percents of Thais including monopolies by giant companies, and decentralizing the country to allow regions/provinces to elect and form their own local governments and thus make local decisions, not simply Bangkok-centric, just to name a few.
This massive win commenced years back when the Future Forward Party (one of the newest opposition parties) led these campaigns by educating people and introducing them with a new, hopeful political ideology. The party was later collapsed and banned by the pro-government in a usual attempt to get rid of what they saw as a threat, of course, to the military-backed regime and their entire share of power in the government. There came the Move Forward Party led by Mr Pita, who continues the mission, and finally the party won the majority votes no one has ever anticipated. Now what we call the "pro-democracy" parties are forming coalition to gain majority seats in the parliament, now with over 310 out of 500. Despite some concerns over the senators, who can vote for the Prime Minister this time (as the current Constitution grants them the right to do so), the forming coalition has high hopes that they can successfully become Thailand's next government.
To me, and many Thais I believe, Mr Pita isn't all about the face or the look, but his competence, conviction, and commitment to his promises and the new days of Thailand appeal to us most. The fact that he was a Harvard and MIT alumnus is the cherry on top of what a capable leader he could be. We would like to thank all the good wishes from other countries and hope that you stand by Thailand during this critical moment in Thai political history.

Western media usually misses quite a bit of nuance when covering Thai politics. Which means they are missing the tectonic shifts happening in the undercurrents of the political landscape.
Part of that is the complete inability to parse the politics of the '90s and '00s that preceded the coups. Because the major parties were a populist center-right/right-wing party, and a royalist center/center-right party. Which just didn't make any sense to outsiders at the time. The fact that pro-business Thaksin was ever coined Liberal or Leftist in the foreign media, due to his populism, when he was our right-wing party, was especially weird.
Not that political ideology mattered over much when everyone was essentially a flavour of center-right. With royalist not yet picking up political connotations until post-coup and then again post-Rama 9. For comparison, a British-Thai pro-Brexit proud conservative will most ideologically align themselves with Phuea Thai for instance.
But the undercurrents are changing.
Move Forward provided a Progressive movement that was very much missing from the ideological landscape. It also ate in to Phuea Thai's populist mandate, of those who saw both sides as corrupt so you might as well vote for Phuea Thai to benefit your area, providing them with an actual anti-establishment party to congregate around. And the historical Centrists who voted military as a bulwark against the corruption/populism of the Shinawatra dynasty have been sufficiently disillusioned, and with no other choices, they'd rather back Move Forward as the new bulwark, even if they might not fully agree with their ideology.
Helped by the fact that Move Forward have toned-down their (public) abolitionist rhetoric, as well as reoriented towards cultural progressiveness instead of the more divisive economically leftist talking points.
That's about as streamlined a summary as I can make of it, without (hopefully) spilling my own political opinions in to the mix over much. Because no matter who I talk to, wherever they are in the political spectrum here, they all roll their eyes whenever they look at how foreign media has been attempting to interpret the situation through the western perspective with reductive labels like Liberal/Conservative. And FPTP does a lot to mask the underlying political currents to outsiders.
There's nothing progressive about MF other than rhetoric (if even that). And in many ways the military and company aren't in line with what would be called conservative in western politics. The western press uses these labels for Thai politicians simply to win greater western support for those Thai politicians and parties with a pro-western-elite agenda. As those in the west who are labelled "liberal" or "progressive" tend to have more interest in what happens in foreign countries than those who are labelled "conservative", the western press calls the western puppet parties (aka Move Forward and Pheu Thai) "progressive" or "liberal" or "democratic" to arouse sympathy for these parties, while they sell Thailand out to the west. Hell, Thaksin met with the Council on Foreign Relations the day before the military ousted him. I think using colors and referring to them as Red, Orange, and Yellow makes a lot more sense as the colors themselves are value-neutral.

For anyone who’s unsure about the senators, the reason they might have less power than they once had is that they can’t vote for a policy, just prime minister. Usually when the voices are almost enough to win on the military side they will convince some smaller parties to join them and some representatives from the opposition. However with this large of a margin it’s unlikely they will be able to pull enough thus even if they elect tehir old prime minister out the representative can immediatly do a vote of no confidence, which th senators can’t participate in and kick out the prime minister.

No matter Move Forward Party with able to run a government or not, I believed this is a new chapter for Thai political landscape.
In Thailand, normally politician buy votes and that's used to be the only way to win a seat especially in the rural area. And for the party list MP seat, people tend to vote for the most populist policy regardless the policy even feasible or not and give zero F regarding political ideology.
So it is a formula for Thai election, buying vote in rural area + extreme populist policy.
But Move Forward Party they do not have that amount of money to buy vote and their policy focused on political reform than populist, but they still win the election. So even some of my friends who is on the right wing while Move Forward Party is on the left, they are still happy that Move Forward Party win this election. This is a showcase that any political party can win without buying vote and we hope that we will have several more political party like this emerge in the coming years. This does spark a lot of hope for most Thai except for the far right.

You know, I don't think the military would launch a coup per se. I am sure the Thai military have been keeping a close eye in what's going on in Myanmar, a country that experienced a coup in 2021 and it's been chaos ever since. I think the Thai military will try to be more discrete, maybe try to engineer events behind the scenes, make it harder for the new government to pursue its policies or coerce them in some way.

Military coup d'etat is not as easy as you might think, as there is pattern and method in doing it.
Before anything, there is a last resort mechanism the establishment can use to stop this government forming if the senate doesn't do it: the constitutional court. Every ruling party in Thailand has been dissolved by this court, including the opposition Future Forward in 2020 and the two predecessors of Pheu Thai.
First thing, a coup d'etat has never happened earlier than 2-3 years of an elected government, so this is valuable time slot for this government (if they can form it) to do the sweeping changes.
Secondly, a coup d'etat in Thailand can only happen when there are a group of protesters calling for it (this is mostly the case for post-Thaksin politics).
Thirdly, there is a theory in Thai politics that the urban core and the rural area play different roles. The rural area elects a government, and the urban core overthrows it.
This time, both the urban core and the rural area voted for this red and orange coalition. That is the hefty price Pita is talking about.
