- Planting Alfalfa & Orchard Grass Hay on 15 acres in Southern Illinois.
ProHarvest Hybri-Force 3400 Alfalfa
I used a Great Plains 1006NT Drill and my John Deere 5300 Tractor.
This field will be used to bale high quality small square hay to sell for horses.

They say if you are putting alfalfa seed down correctly you should see some seed on top of the ground.
Will you replant this every year or will you get multiple year cuttings off of this one planting… thinking about growing some alfalfa myself?
Not every year, should be good for 3-5 years depending on cutting/fertilizing. May need to overseed at a lighter rate every other year to keep the weeds out.
The John Deere drill that our district has has tubes that direct drill it into the sliced opening and then closes it but I know when it’s ended up like what yours has done it can be hit and miss on germination might want to run a cultipacker over that I’ve done that before because boy if the adjustments aren’t just right and no tail can backfire on you
Yeah, cultipacker was my thought too, but I don’t have access to a small enough one for my tractor. And I didn’t push the issue on finding one too much knowing that we had rain/snow coming. I’m going to head out there today and see what the rain/snow did to it. Thanks for watching!
