I married into a wealthy family, and you’d be surprised how often they talk about what they want done when they die and what is going to happen to their estate. Definitely talk to your loved ones so they know what you want and make sure you get it in writing.
I'm so glad that her daughter is living a normal life, and her dad is just being the most average dad possible for her. I remember when the battle over her paternity was going on a lot of people speculated that these guys were coming out of the woodworks to claim her for money, and my mom was so worried she wasn't gonna get a normal childhood.
Oh My God, literally my biggest concern when dani Lynn's paternity was up in the air was "I hope all these men squabbling about her paternity are at least able to care about her too" like what a low bar.. but I'm glad that at least she gets a happy (relatively) ending
fun fact: the reason Houdini and his wife did the whole seance thing is because they wanted to proof ghosts weren't real and wanted to discredit the "psychics" who steal people's money claiming they can connect them with their passed loved ones
Omg I love that Houdini bit, because he was an avid disbeliever of mediums and spiritualists and he would regularly go to famous spiritualist performances and discredit them. Even in his death, he was calling out those lying conmen.
This video makes me think that if I were to write a will, I could include a clause demanding that any of the fanfiction I have not yet published be published postumously on Ao3 in a collection of work titled "From My Junk Drawer"
Interesting... as always. FYI, in Dutch law a child has an inheritance part that can't be taken away by any will. So you can't disinherit your kids, or your spouce. You can cut down the inheritance to the legal minimum, which is still a percentage of the whole. The spouce and kids get the same minimum share. You can ofcourse divorce your spouce but you can't disinherit them while the mariage is still in effect. All this to stymie these type of shenanigans. And worse.

My own petty will story: my abusive bio grandma was super pissed when my mom finally went no contact when we were kids. She mailed this super condescending letter saying that she will cut me and my sister out of the will if my Mom goes no contact with my birthday presents. My mom kept the letter but mailed back the birthday presents. Fast forward a couple of decades letter when she finally kicks the bucket and we finally get the will: turns out my sister and I were in the will and there was a hasty and angry amendment cutting me and my sister out on the date she would have received the returned birthday presents.
Both of my parents are narcissist and one of my sisters is. None of us are rich. According to the reverse snobs commenting at this video, only rich people behave this way. But you and I both know rich people are no different and us "nornal" people are not necessarily more virtuous. They just have more money and we have less of it. That's it. Same human strengths and frailties.
My grandparents split their funds between all of their kids equally, except for my aunt who was left an exact dollar amount just over 7k because she spent that much on stuff for them then tried to use the purchase as leverage to have them move in with her as free live in house cleaners/gardener/cook/childcare. Said aunt contested the will at the last minute and my grandparents lawyer was so petty he only offered more than the just over 7k when we told him to just accept their 25k offer (full share was about 50k) so we could be done with her. He offered 15k and planned to accept their counter offer but they accepted the 15k.
I remember seeing all the headlines and tabloid covers regarding Anna Nicole, but didn't really follow the court battles. OMG what a rollercoaster ride!!!
My grandpa died in 2008 and though he did draft a will it went missing after he died. Since my family LOVES to pretend we're all immortal he never had a serious sit down with his families (he had three different sets of children by three different women) to discuss how he wanted his estate divided, shit hit the fan immediately after the funeral. Literally over a dozen people are to this day fighting over the millions he left behind. Same thing happened with my mum, she knew she was sick and most likely knew she was dying but didn't want to accept it. No will in sight so once again, the little she got from my grandpa's estate was fought over. My dad and I were granted administration but I highly doubt that would be the case if my little sisters (minors who actually need the money to *live*) weren't involved. If you're reading this, please write up some kind of will. Doesn't matter how little you have or how insignificant you think your possessions might be to others, if there's anyone or anything you'd like to see benefit once you're gone- especially charitable causes- then it's worth the extra steps.
Anna Nicole Smith had a tragic life. I won't pretend that she was a perfect person but in a lot of the media that I followed her in I think she had an understated goodness about her. I wish her life circumstances had taken her down a better road.
Okay firstly, this video was brilliant!! 😂 The ending with the Probate judges quote was the icing on the cake for me, so funny! Secondly, when Anna Nicole did put on weight she still looked gorgeous, I don't get why society looks down on fat people ESPECIALLY fat women. It's weird. Lastly, loving this content Leeja, entertaining and informative! 💙
Unbelievable reading of the probate judge quote! I just get the very strong feeling you read that quote and were like ‘well… I guess I gotta make this video now’. Nice one, thanks for making such good video!
Yes! Please especially if you remarry and have kids. My mom amd her siblings got screwed bc my granddad didn't update his will after getting remarried and so his wife of less than a year (iirc) walked away w so much shit that had been in the family for years and had been meant for them in the original will. Luckily, they got a lot of it after taking her to court, but there's stuff they're still mad about and apparently she wouldn't even let them talk to him when he was in the hospital after his final heart attack (issue he'd been dealing with for years, too much scar tissue for a pacemaker).
The level of research and detail in this video, and the clear delight you take in educating us on these demented rich people is such a joy to watch. Thanks for making this, also the white shirt+lipstick+a gold look is v v chic!
When in 9th grade (16yo) in social studies class we were learning about wills. We could write our own will and I think I still have it somewhere. As I have been too lazy to write a new one it's legally binding if found. In it I think I gave all of my assets to our cat.
If you shred the original and there's no copies, ✨ it never happened. ✨ I also don't know the enforceability of a will that's written by a 16 year old unless it was still endorsed at age 18 (which could be as simple as seeing it, not objecting to anything, and just do nothing)
@@Metroid250 I don't know where it is and am too lazy to try and find it. Also in Finnish law, the minimum for a will is that the person writing it and the witnesses have to be at least 16. Both them are true so the will is legally valid
I'm glad rules in the Netherlands are different. For example, you can not cut out your children, you can minimize the amount they get, but not cut them out completely.
My maiden name is Anna Smith, and for YEARS, people would ask me if my middle name was Nicole? I have even dressed up as Anna Nicole for Halloween, with a little stuffed dog named "Sugar Pie." I knew her legal battles were long and messy, but holy cow, I had no idea how bad it actually was!?! I like your comment... Justice for Anna!
How could they not just settle with Anna and throw her 10mil or something. Unbelievable. The greed these rich people have is disgusting. Karma do your thing girl!
Fun fact Anna Nicole Smith fun fact Anna Nicole Smith's legal troubles paid for the pool we spent our high school summers in. The judge was not the only one who was tired of their shit. I can confirm the court reporter was to.
I always thought that I was a trust fund kid, but I asked my mom about the specifics of the will/trust and she said it wasn't a trust. I guess great grandparents just dedicated my portion of the inheritance to ensure that I and my brother get a college education (they were a teacher and professor).
Leija! For kooky rich people stuff, I'd recommend reading Brooke Shields' book she wrote about her relationship with her mother, who was the kooky (semi)celebrity who had warehouses full of things that Brooke only discovered after her mother had passed. I couldn't get over it!

She DID leave most of her fortune to her son, Redmond - it was the father of her son (Ryan O'Neal) who wasn't left anything. To be fair, it sounds like Ryan was a real asshole (Farrah once caught him in bed with another woman, and he allegedly beat her Farrah up).
A will is SUPER IMPORTANT! My dad didnt have one and we had to deal wtih the state and figure shit out. HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. Super expensive and fucking awful. Have a living will. Death sucks, but making your loved ones dealing with that shit is way WAY worse. As far as shit not signed, my dad had a will BUT IT WASNT FUCKING SIGNED. SIGN THAT SHIT.
The thing with Farrah is weird! She didn't leave anything to her life partner, but gave money to an ex lover??? Something MUST have happened for her to do that. It smells pretty vindictive to me 😕. But who knows I definitely wasn't a fan or followed her in anyway before she died 🤷. Her death was definitely shadowed over by Michael Jackson's death at around the same time.
Wow. That was a wild ride. And it hits close to home for me, because my husband died eight months ago... without a will. I tried to convince him to get things in order after his terminal diagnosis (as it turned out, he had less than two months at that point), but he just couldn't accept reality... It's disappointing, but I can't judge him for it too much, because I know how hard it was... I witnessed everything. So yeah, just as you said, I'm left picking up the pieces in probate. Hardly anything was liquid, and any assets that remain aren't worth much or are difficult to sell... I'm not even certain it will cover his debts. And his family is being weird... it's a whole mess. If anyone is reading this, please get your stuff in order, regardless of your age or health... you never know what can happen, and I can tell you from experience that it is a nightmare to try to deal with things in our modern era when a deceased person doesn't leave behind any instructions or passwords to any computers or accounts. Please do it for your family and friends who survive you 💟
Seriously: if you have 10B dollars… is it so difficult to agree on splitting the wills? The laws should be strict on this matter. Share equally among all children snd partner. And thats it.
A famous spanish comedian has arranged to have a tanner make a wallet out of his scrotum when he dies, this is supposed to be a gift for his best friend, who was reluctant to accept at first, but now seems to be on board.
I'm surprised there isn't a simple, automatic, default judgment if there is no will or the will is unclear (that's universal across all 50 states) Judge: "Hey, he didn't have his shit together. That sucks. Anyways, here's the default portions you will receive, determined by your position and the position of other surviving next of kin; on the next of kin priority list." Seems like it would save a lot of hassle. If you don't see fit to make your wishes known before you become incapacitated or die... then an automatic default judgement seems prudent
This was so cool and interesting. I can remember all of Anna Nicole's hoopla. I can remember during the 2nd trial reporters were questioning if she purchased new clothes for this.
just did jury duty for the first time (Ramsey Co). It was super interesting (and as an art nerd, the Ramsey Co courthouse is a deco dream 😅😅 Rich people really do be crazy. Even just having an advanced directive so people know what to do if you die is so important (Caitlin Doughty has done videos about it) but man....scrambling to handle assets and property without legal guidance. I am sweating and uncomfy just thinking about it. plan your stuff, folks.
My father just died. He didn't have a will. Please don't be selfish like that. Don't put your kids and or loved ones through that. I begged him to have one.
OMG that poor probate judge. Generally I think if a judge recuses himself from a case, its not gonna look good for him but I feel this is hella reasonable. If the two parties will just get along and maybe just agree on compromises, this literal career long circus wouldve ended much faster and happier. but no, theyre both rich enough to keep the cycle going, even after dying. Or at least the wills get updated the first time around- Also Houndini and Frank Sinatra are valid and clever on their wills xDD
Fucking hell, after my dad died my family (composed of my father's aunts, cousins and siblings) want to take the money or use me as their personal ATM because they did that to my dad. Now that he's gone and I got everything and they didn't get what they wanted, they betrayed me, created false narratives about me, even some of them have the audacity to ask where the hell did the money went. It's fucking toxic to witness these things at 22. So I made a written will with my signature, date that it's written and thumbmark. So that even though they'll still fight for what's left of my father and I, I still got the final say, bitches.
Houdini was one of the most well known skeptics of the Spiritualist movement, and by him and his wife arranging for the seances, he was publicly discrediting the practice. Nice.
It's typically put in a trust just like for a kid! And then the executor of the trust invests the money wisely and gives payouts to the caregiver and for all the pet's expenses as they arise
I didn't even know who she was. I don't understand how that can be considered fat. She looked more attractive early 2000s photos then the previous ones in my opinion.
Did Kurt Vonnegut say that the same people to don't know what to get you for father's day know exactly what you want when you die. A will is good but my father made his girlfriend the executor of his will. I'm still waiting. (Note, this stupidity is common)
What about entails on properties? Did that stop in the US? It was a big part of the plot of Pride and Prejudice because the main characters couldn't inherit their fathers property because it was entailed to the male line.

@@Zelomakitoko I'm so sorry that happened! These things can go so wrong.
I love that judge's statement, you can feel his despair
It's an amazing quote and I really feel for them xD

Same here. The update that her dad loves her like a normal dad is the information about Anna Nicole Smith that I never knew I wanted.
the judge who finally quit on the case is my hero. i would have tossed every single thick book i could find at these people after the first year.
fun fact: the reason Houdini and his wife did the whole seance thing is because they wanted to proof ghosts weren't real and wanted to discredit the "psychics" who steal people's money claiming they can connect them with their passed loved ones
And worse.
France has a similar law.
It's a lot like German inheritance laws
Anna Nicole Smith Lawyer #14: What the hell is this? Are these files from 1996? Is this a GUESS catalog? What happened to the last guy?
67-year-old White Dude Managing Partner: He quit. Got tired of being a lawyer. Said he wanted to make a real difference in people's lives.

I feel so bad for that Probate Judge I'm crying!
I was NOT PREPARED for that judge's self-recusing rant. Quality content. *Chef's kiss 😘👌*
Rich people fighting over money they didn’t earn. So much fun to watch or read about. Not schadenfreude, just kooky fun. Thanks.
Harry Houdini or, as he's known in the afterlife, Seancé Knowles
Unbelievable reading of the probate judge quote! I just get the very strong feeling you read that quote and were like ‘well… I guess I gotta make this video now’. Nice one, thanks for making such good video!
That last one was like a knife fight in a phone booth.
“They don’t want to agree to anything. They just want to pay lawyers”
Idk why but that wording is hilarious to me 😛
That judge recusal is AMAZING lmao
They say a death brings out the worst and the best in people.
The level of research and detail in this video, and the clear delight you take in educating us on these demented rich people is such a joy to watch. Thanks for making this, also the white shirt+lipstick+a gold look is v v chic!
Yes! Justice for Anna! Thank you for speaking the truth, she was hot as "fat" Anna and those jokes were RUTHLESS and CONSTANT.
8:15 The Houdini will regarding seances was ironic, given that a large part of his career had been dedicated to debunking false "spirit mediums."
I’m sorry to bring this up but unless your cat lives a REALLY long time this is probably a moot point…
So very interesting, Thank you for the added entertainment value!
I didn't think that crazy story would have a heartwarming end, but it did and I'm grateful.
I’m gonna need you to ANNUNCIATE when you say knickerbocker 🤣 my heart stopped
I was just thinking, "It's like Jarndyce and Jarndyce" and then you brought up the Dickens comparison. So apt.
I absolutely love you! So refreshing and that humor gets me errytime I swear 😂🎉❤❤
How is that different from anything regular people do? The undiscovered wacky potholder collection or the 2nd family?
@@C.Church She had literal multiple hangars full of belongings from floor to ceiling. Many things had other things hidden inside of them. My hat is off to that probate judge. I can only imagine how absolutely done with the case they must have been to just fly off the handle like that, finding so many creative ways to say, "No, fuck you people." xD
Leeja: goes into the details around Anna Nicole Smith
me: *brain plays the Succession theme*
i was saying to myself that the anna nichole court story sounded like jondyce v jondyce, then you made the dickens comment.
"Should I become a Houston stripper?" I'm very very gay, butI live in Houston and if you were a Houston stripper I'd venture in there. I'd bring a bunch of kweens with me, that strip club wouldn't even know what hit it 🤣 Love ya. Love the channel!
“Hey, baby… by paying the entry fee you have effectively entered into a private agreement with this establishment which entitles you to look at my tatas; however this does not in any way imply entitlement to interact physically with myself or any other employee and if you try anything Crazy Mick will take you out the back and bring to bear the full force of the law on your ass.
Alright?”
@@shortcake66 ooo nooo. My other gay friends and I would not be there doin' that. I just meant with us there at least a few moments of hilarity would ensue and a stripper could feel safe with us for sure 😁
@@bradmiller6621 HaHaHa… I know! I’m just trying to imagine her talking to normal punters, but my brain can’t see or hear her in any other way than how she is on the channel. 😂 I absolutely love the idea of a gay takeover where everyone agrees to go on a certain night, and the girls get one night where they’re not being harassed and treated as sex objects. I think we should Make This Happen
10/10 for reading the full quote, loved it! For the loopers out there: 19:11
Wow, the Farrah Fawcett will got me shook. Nothing to her own child but 100k to her ex-lover
You probably want to update your will if you cut off the family member who was at one time going to inherit 😁
*pouring one out for the sad associates on Anna's cases*
A famous spanish comedian has arranged to have a tanner make a wallet out of his scrotum when he dies, this is supposed to be a gift for his best friend, who was reluctant to accept at first, but now seems to be on board.
I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I heard "rule against perpetuities" as a trauma response
Love your work and style! XO
Gave that judge PTSD
I'm surprised there isn't a simple, automatic, default judgment if there is no will or the will is unclear (that's universal across all 50 states)
Judge: "Hey, he didn't have his shit together. That sucks. Anyways, here's the default portions you will receive, determined by your position and the position of other surviving next of kin; on the next of kin priority list."
Seems like it would save a lot of hassle. If you don't see fit to make your wishes known before you become incapacitated or die... then an automatic default judgement seems prudent
Ooohhh wee Ana Nicole was just an absolute mess! Good job making wills interesting 😊
Fun fact, the purpose of the seances was for Houdini to continue to prove seances weren't real because he hated spiritualism and the occult.
Yes! I don't like it when people skip over this fact.
Oh fascinating I didn't read that in my research but that's cool to know
This was so cool and interesting. I can remember all of Anna Nicole's hoopla. I can remember during the 2nd trial reporters were questioning if she purchased new clothes for this.
just did jury duty for the first time (Ramsey Co). It was super interesting (and as an art nerd, the Ramsey Co courthouse is a deco dream 😅😅
Rich people really do be crazy.
Or at least the wills get updated the first time around-
Also Houndini and Frank Sinatra are valid and clever on their wills xDD
Love this style of video Leeja!! Those quotes from the judge had me cackling, so funny
Did you have your signature witnessed??
Houdini was one of the most well known skeptics of the Spiritualist movement, and by him and his wife arranging for the seances, he was publicly discrediting the practice. Nice.
That was the smartest, funniest and most inciteful intro ever on UA-cam. I love you.
My new career goal is to become the guardian of a rich dog.
I'd love to know more about what really happens when people leave their assets to their pets? How does that work?
It's typically put in a trust just like for a kid! And then the executor of the trust invests the money wisely and gives payouts to the caregiver and for all the pet's expenses as they arise
The most shocking thing in this video is the photographic evidence that Larry Birkhead has had the same hairstyle since the early 2000’s.
LOLLLL
Ok Anna Nicole knew EXACTLY what she was doing with that old ass man! She should have gotten nothing.
Thanks for reminding me. I really gotta move my will out of my Notes app and into the hands of a lawyer. 🙈
I appreciate your integrity keeping Anna’s name out of the title.
I didn't even know who she was. I don't understand how that can be considered fat. She looked more attractive early 2000s photos then the previous ones in my opinion.
I took a property class my first semester of law school and the rule against perpetuities is the bane of my existence
Did Kurt Vonnegut say that the same people to don't know what to get you for father's day know exactly what you want when you die.
A will is good but my father made his girlfriend the executor of his will. I'm still waiting.
(Note, this stupidity is common)
The portrayal of the character based on Leona Helmsley on the show Central Park on Apple TV is pretty epic
Damn that Probate Judge was not having it anymore. That case is the same age as me👀
The more I learn about Ben Franklin, the more I realize how much he'd love gen z culture
To be clear, Houdini hated séances and psychics. If he had that agreement with his wife, it would have been to disprove the séance.
What about entails on properties? Did that stop in the US? It was a big part of the plot of Pride and Prejudice because the main characters couldn't inherit their fathers property because it was entailed to the male line.
Downton Abbey also
Oh. My god. That poor judge.
