We have a Rodecaster that we use on our show, Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, and this presentation has been very helpful - thanks so much! Great stuff guys!
Like many reviewers you do not seem to understand that the voice settings do not change what your voice sounds like, they actually change how the filters are applied. A good example of this is the use of the noise gate. You will find that the effect of the gate changes in how you have told the RØDECaster what your voice is like in both tone and volume. The purpose is to make changes based upon a non audio engineers understanding of complicated setting parameters.
Thanks for this review, I just purchased my first condenser mic the Audio Technica AT2020, and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface both which are nice and cost effective. Your video was the catalyst for me to pause on the audio recorder and was able to cancel it, now the question is do I want to get my feet wet with the $160 unit or jump in with the $600 Rode.
The RØDECaster Pro has some convenient built-in effects for voice recording, does mix-minus automatically, and it makes interfacing with phones easier. But you could achieve similar results with other gear and plug-ins. For us, it comes down to convenience.
It's Great the only thing I believe it's missing is Multi Track Recording into the Mixer/SD Card and More Importantly On Board Effects Processing Like "Reverb, Chorus, Delays Etc!
Thanks for the wonderful review. thanks for showing all the effects. only one thing missing is reverb / delay. Do you know how i can bring that into this system? Another question i have regarding live sound output, can i add the stereo output directly to powered speakers so audience can hear the same the sound? or do i need additional sound mixer for extra boost?
To add reverb or other external effects, I would use either the USB or smartphone channel if you’re not already using one of those. If using USB, you could send the audio to a computer that adds reverb in real-time using a DAW like Logic Pro X or others. The DAW should then send the return signal back to the RØDECaster Pro. This will add reverb and delay to the entire mix. You could do something similar with the smartphone jack. Just get a TRRS y-cable to split the mic/headphone connections and hook it up to external reverb box. The y-cable headphone jack would be the return from the reverb. The mono mic connection would connect to the input on the reverb.
WOW that was amazing to hear the Rode Caster Pro in action.. So you did this tutorial in 2019 and I hope you still using it.. I have a question for you? I have a Shure sm7b can the Rode Caster with my cloudlifter able to give me the full radio coming out the sm7b ??? What I’m saying can the Rode Caster handle the sm7b with or without the Clouldlufter?? Please let me know from your experience..
Jean-Michel Argentin yes. We’ve tested the SM7B with the RØDECaster Pro without a cloudlifter, and it sounds great. See our other video to hear the SM7B compared to PodMic on RØDECaster Pro ua-cam.com/video/0RjFtbkRmLg/v-deo.html
Hello, can I use it for song writing purpose using with DAW instead of Audio interface. The looks and controls are fascinating me. Currently am using Focusrite Scarlett & planning to get babyface pro RME Will it be a good choice going with rode caster?? Please suggest.
I’m looking at the Rodecaster Pro and the new Zoom L8. I like the portability of the Zoom with 4 AA Batteries and that will run 2 1/2 hours without plugging it into 110 power.
chivatech but you have to buy the extras. With my L-8, it’s built into the unit. I just add batteries and my Rav Power Brick and I can podcast anywhere.
I am thinking about purchasing this device and all the reviews and tutorials look great. My only question is with the 2.0 firmware update. I am unclear whether there exists an option to mute the speaker outputs automatically when enabling one of the mic channels. Coming from traditional radio, this is a standard feature on broadcast mixers so as to prevent feedback. It is also great as an indicator that the microphones are muted and hosts can hear commercials or music without necessarily wearing headphones.
Can the settings for noise gate, compression, etc. be manipulated at all, like increasing the compression ratio for example....or are the extents of those settings basically just "on" or "off"?
I had this same question and actually this was the only reason I don't use my Rodecaster pro for my podcast. I use my Shure SM7B with a cloudlifter and dbx286s and that sound combo works for me. Unfortunately the dbx only has line out (not XLR :( ) and the Rode doesn't have a balanced line input option. I haven't experimented with using the 3.5mm input on the Rodecaster with a converter cable but that may be a valid workaround. My hope is that the Rodecaster Pro II will have a few more line level input options.
Beyond 50 Percent I found a solution, I ordered balanced line out to XLR. Check out my UA-cam channel on how I connected using the DBX 286s (video is to be uploaded soon)
I though the SOLO green button had to do with like the mix minus? You have to have the green selected for that mic input channel to be recorded in the mix. I could be wrong, I've watched a few on the RCP back to back.
When the green solo and red mute are engaged at the same time, it allows people on headphones to hear and talk to each other without being recorded or going on air-like a private green room before you bring a guest live. This is useful if you’re playing intro or segue music and want to talk to your guest privately before you go live. Solo doesn’t affect mix minus.
When you use the multi track feature, does it record the processed audio or un processed? And is there a limited function on all channels. Can o use it as a stand alone mixer as well? Thanks
Under Advanced > Audio > Processing you have Effects Edit Mode enabled, which allows you to fine tune the parameters of each effect. Effects Edit Mode was introduced in a more recent firmware update.
Thanks for the review! What's feeding the channel/fader labeled with the USB logo? I understand the USB-C output on the back is to connect the Rodecaster to a computer as an audio interface.
So if I have two microphones configured, should I only use the front port for the earphones instead of the respective earphone for those different microphones? I have been using one for vo and one for singing. Also, sometimes I cannot hear my triggered sounds when I press the button while in WebEx. Does this mean the sound configuration only allows for the microphone and cannot hear sound effects channel? I have been able to speak with either microphone but I can't hear the sound effects when I click the button. Thanks for any tips on this!
I love mine, but it never came with the screw-lock on my power cable, it has been yanked out a few times. I dunno why Rode didn't ship them all out with this locking cable.
Don’t know either, but the locking one I have isn’t perfect. The connector becomes loose from the chassis after a few times twisting off the power cable.
Thanks for making this video, guys. Can I connect the Rodecaster Pro to my Mac and record a remote session via Cleanfeed.net and still utilize all the mixing features?
Yes, but if all Cleanfeed participants are remote, the RØDECaster Pro will record them all into a single stereo track. You won’t be able to mix them on separate channels. If you need to do multitrack post editing, take a look at Cleanfeed Pro subscription for multitrack recording.
Good overview, and cheers for using the actual device. Too many "reviews" out here on YT with people just talking about it without using it. hahaha Agreed, the gate with all the other effects is annoying. You can hear noise which somewhat makes your track sound a bit over processed. It can work well I'm sure. I have this but don't use the gate. I also never use the Aphex processing. One thing, just wanted to mention that a high pass filter is not for plosive control. A high pass filter is meant to remove rumble and or erroneous low end frequencies from a performance. Not sure where the Rodecaster is set. Probably around 80hz but in post people tend to adjust this anywhere in the 40-100 ish hz range. a pop filter will minimize pops from plosives as that's actual wind moving against the mic diaphragm. Multi to SD card should be available this month if not today.
Mike Bajrami Thanks for watching and the feedback. I agree that high pass filters aren’t primarily designed for pop filtering, but it did significantly reduce them in our case. The mic diaphragm, pre-amps and A/D converters can be overloaded by excessive pops, so if the high pass happens after all that, then it won’t be effective at all. As you said, high pass does help when there is excessive undesirable low frequency sound, which can often overwhelm the overall signal and more important mid and high frequency range in vocals. I’ve also heard from RØDE that internal multitrack is coming this week. Cheers!
Really enjoy The Three Techs. I am a Personal Chef starting my own podcast and new to all the technology to create a podcast. Your videos are great for the non techee. I have been able to learn everything from your videos. Do you have a video about how to hook Cleanfeed to the Rodecaster Pro through my Mac and the additional cables are needed? Thanks!
I just ordered two for the college where I work. One for the studio and one for the athletic department for home and away games. I thought about that question as well. I'm going to try and maybe come out one of the headphone jacks. Can't hurt to try. 🤷🏿♂️
@@MrPoppareal I Just got mine. there is a ttrs slot in front of the rode caster pro, you can then attach your recording device to this. I just tested it and it worked great, i do have strange feedback however.
Good question. If you don’t need the extra mic inputs, vocal effects, sound pads, and smartphone connectivity, you could probably just use a regular USB mic or USB audio interface.
Unfortunately the release on their auto-gate is too slow. Ugh. I'd have to process that again with a proper gas in post production unless it has advanced options to change the attack and the release.
This unit is designed for podcasting with up to four mics for four people in the room. The mic channels are mono and mic level only, so they wouldn’t work well for playback input unless you converted your playback levels to mic level first.
We tested this once. The mic inputs definitely don’t like line level signals. Maybe you could insert a signal pad device to attenuate the line level signal down to mic level, but it doesn’t work out of the box.
Am I the only one who really doesn't like that big bottom radio sound? Seems to be super popular among Americans, and while it's very common on Norwegian radio too I've never liked it. I much prefer natural voices, and in this video I thought it sounded best with everything off.
It’s definitely subjective and also depends on your audience and genre of programming. It’s available if the need ever arises! But feel free to run with everything switched off!
There was a bug in that firmware version. Ducking should not have appeared on all four channels. It should only appear on channel 1. It should be fixed in the current firmware.
The noise gate is annoying on this - hissing in and out as it lowers. Hmm that doesn't sound so great...Your studio guest's sound is much cleaner. The importance of background noise reduction before recording. I'm not going to buy this until multi-track comes to SD for backup and indepenedent of the computer.
L4LTV That’s a fair point about the presence of background noise, and normally it would be quieter for other shows we do. If anything hopefully it helped illustrate a point about how the noise gate works in non-ideal environments-especially for people doing live shows with no option for post processing. The Three Techs Yes - much more useful this way than a slick presentation - it highlights the work need doing on a studio environment before a show. Great show and outline btw.
Multitrack recording to the internal microSD card is coming next week (the week of April 15, 2019) in a firmware update. It will be a single WAV file with multiple tracks.

Great if they can do it though!
L4LTV I spoke to two folks from RØDE at the NAB Show yesterday. They said internal multitrack recording firmware is coming next week. Things could always change, but this is the latest info.
