  • (April 8, 2011) Don Norman speaks about complexity in everyday life and how design helps us understand and cope with complexity. Norman gives many examples of complexity and design working together to create understanding for the consumer and asks, "Why do we need complexity? Because what we really want is understanding, so, it's about design."

4:04 that actually all i came for. tools must match life and life is complex. learning complex things can be challenging. but thats life... "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler"

Life is autopoietic, complexity is only part of it! Our education is allopoietic! We need knowledge to live love and freedom!

He mixes up so many concepts. If you want to navigate through complex topics you need to talk in precise, or be it at least consistent ways.

Interesting talks, we need more generalist but do need more advice and guidance from specialist to improve our expertise.

I like the part about his Italian espresso maker. It reminds me that there's no such thing as real coffee in the States, with the exception of Miami where you can get some pretty good Cuban coffee. But people think that Starbucks serves "real" coffee

thank you billions visible and understanding discover and learn -designers artist they all need bus managers because they are not in real world -real world is observed with antropologists as actually what and how they do.. watching observing skills ...intreraction design, right now making 80 seperate scientist to design a new antenna it should be recorded as proses model - thats why in TR i re published" Tasarim"first look at the cluster" creation takes all brain and skills work together

FYI. Salt n pepper shakers explained. Salt is on the left because there are more holes...why are there more holes? because salt granules are larger than ground pepper granules. #SoundsLegit

+Robin Williams Rather counter intuitively this is not the case. 5 holes will spill salt onto the food... too much. So it has one hole.
One hole will result in pepper which is finer simply dropping to the bottom with very little falling through the hole. The air cannot permeated the body of pepper, its much too fine, so there is no pressure to allow it to fall through the single hole. To get around this pepper shakers have more holes. You can check this... most people today do not use these items though, but lots of us have them.
However sometimes pepper in the shaker is ground in a machine in the restaurant meaning it will be more coarse and oddly shaped, and larger in granulation than the salt.... in which case it should not be in a shaker at all, but supplied in a grinder.
Ergo pepper shakers 5 holes and salt one hole.
However almost nobody knows this in the 21st century. So we always check. The more expensive the restaurant the more accurate this will be. The whole thing has fallen out of prevalence. Its now 2016, not 1916 or 1816, so it doesn't matter.
For the same reason leaving a sign that says 'wet paint' will results in lots of finger marks. Not leaving such a sign results in lots of clothing marks. It will also result in higher sales of clothing locally. Simple thing, complex result.

People's now a days don't like complexity not because they don't like complexity cause they don't have time but thats a false information everyone has time but they are just trying to be simple

Ok! We can assumed complexity exists. However, something more profound is what is the source of complexity, which principles or laws are implicated? The lecturer does not addressed this issue. On the other hand, neither he explains what makes system complex. Philosopher Paralternativeecelsus clearly unveils this issues in his book.
