I have never used silks before, I used a satin type way back in mid 90’s. That was right about time I had put stitching away for awhile. Made my own design for a family tree I stitched for my Mom as a Christmas gift.
I have done lots of projects with silk on needlepoint and cross stitch. But, once the overdyed threads became available, I found that I loved working with them more just due to the color variation those threads provide as I love that primitive/antique look on things. Love your new bee bag and the many neat projects you show. Your shop looks wonderful. Have a great time at the concert. Cheers, Norma in Boise, ID
Norma, the companies that produce silk fiber usually offer an over-dyed line as well. So you can have the best of both worlds... as far as your checking account will take you:-)
I just found you! You are a delight to watch. And I do use silks, but that pretty blue one I have not tried before. So I’d like to stitch with the silks
What a nice surprise to find your shop and your Flosstube episodes! You are so generous with this week's chance for silk fibers; yes, I have stitched with Needlepoint Silk on a La-D-Da design.
Margie, I really like NPI based on my most recent experience with Splendor. I need to do more sample stitching with different fibers for comparison purposes.
Hello. I have no experience with silks. I am not sure if I will be able to ever afford them. I love the look of the silks on your bee project. I recently lost one of my flosses I kitted up and started stitching. I could not believe it was gone poof. Frustrating but was Dmc so will be purchasing it this week. Love your farmers market sign. It is wonderful. I have a collection of finishing items also.
Anne, a monochromatic design would be the perfect way to start using silk floss. Black or white is very versatile for using within a variety of projects, so those colors would be a great investment.
No not the price, more like it’s difficult to stitch with or it snags on your fingers, or dries out your skin. Everyone is different, just have to try it out myself.
I have not stitched with silks, however, I would love to give it a try. The colors are so very luscious and gleam on the fabric! I love your videos and your wonderful joyful presence, thank you!
🎉🎉🎉 I made floss tube! Thanks Shelly! I’m so glad you like your bag. Already making improvements... figured out how to quilt them! 😉. Stay tuned!! I have not tried silk thread... actually, in my former cross stitch life ... I may have. Shepherds Bush... lol Would love the opportunity to try it again. Have a good week.
Debbie, I thought you’d be surprised! I actually didn’t plan on saying that much but the memories flooded back:-) My first experience with silk floss was probably Shepherd’s Bush as well.
What a great giveaway! I have not used silk before, mainly because of the cost, but I would love to try it! I lost a skein of Gentle Arts Cucumber yesterday and it took an hour but I found it. Then I lost my needle with a new strand of blue that I eventually found in the cat's bowl (dry food thank goodness!) You're not alone Shelly!
I have never tried silks before and would love to try them. One of the things I do is buy threads for a project and not remember what project I purchased them for since by the time they come in the mail, I have moved on to another project. Oh well. Your floss will show up soon! Happy Stitching! Christine
Christine, when I start collecting fibers for a project I usually put them in a ziplock bag and attach a post-it note with the chart title. However... everything is acid-free now and things don’t stick like they used to. I need to put the note INSIDE the bag lol.
Julie, definitely give silk a try sometime! Maybe a monochromatic design or a basic color like black, white or brown wherever sheen would be appropriate.
CCN and LHN used to kit Classic Colorworks silk in special projects, but I think my customers were afraid of them! It was the perfect way to start using silk, budget-wise.
I have not worked with silk. I have heard a variety reviews that has made me hesitate and also the cost. Your bee project is just beautiful! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I'm FFOing my Christmas in July stitching now. I like stitching better than the finishing of it, haha. Happy stitching!
Hi, Shelly! I loved learning more about silk, and seeing your cute bee project. I’ve not used silk YET! ☺️ But, I am anxious try try it. As always, it was such a pleasure to “visit” with you again! Have a great week. 🥰 Meline
Lori, I could write a book on all of my technology fails over the past few months lol. There is a steep learning curve for someone with a psychology degree lol.
Oh my gosh!!! Silks ❤️❤️❤️ I really love them! Please don’t put my name in-I want someone to win that’s never got to experience them! They’re exquisite!!! I did the AAN Nativity with it. Wow. Every stitcher should get to try it! ❤️❤️❤️ I just love your videos. You always share wonderful, pertinent tips. Thank you for being you. I wish I lived closer! And the pumpkin sign is AWESOME!!!!! ❤️
I’ve used various brands of silk floss. I accumulated most of them from various projects many years ago. I think most of them were from Just Nan and Victoria Sampler projects: Waterlilies, Splendor, NPI, etc. Lately I have accumulated Dinky Dye silks. It seems that about once a year (July) they put OOPS packs together and sell them in their Etsy shop. I think silk is very pretty but they really catch on my perpetually dry thumb on my right hand. I hope you find your thread! It is so aggravating to lose something especially when I think I am very organized!! 🤯😤🤬
Hello Shelly! Love the bee project! I'm using NPI silk right now on Kathy Barrick's Heaven & Nature Sing pattern. I originally started the project with DMC and when I made my way to the deer, I did not like the DMC conversion for it. It in no way matched the photo. So, I ordered just the two silks for the deer and now I wish I hadn't done that. I want to stitch everything in silks now, lol. My check book isn't going to be happy for now on I'm afraid, lol. When I purchased that pattern, I also picked up Dearie & Darling and I don't even want to stitch it now, because I know I can't afford all those silks, and I'm not sure if I could stitch on 40 count or not (I do have a small piece to try out), so I don't know if I would need extra skiens of certain colors or not stitching it on 32 count. That is also a lovely blue you picked out. I love blues and reds. My favorite DMC red is 3857. Take care, Ruth.
Ruth, you already did what I suggested... used silk for the main motif! See, you don’t have to stitch the entire piece in silk and that will help your checkbook:-)
Thanks for another informative video :)). I always look forward to them. I’d love to try the silk thread. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it. Thanks again!
Dalene, the concert was great! It was the second time we saw The New Barleycorn... two Irish men who sing and play multiple instruments and shared great stories, corny jokes and funny lyrics!
Susan, my first experience with silk floss was probably with a Shepherd’s Bush kit so I didn’t feel like I spent a lot of money. I think a monochromatic design is the perfect way to start.
Never used silks before. I have thought about it a few times but didn't do it because of the cost and not knowing if I would like working with them. So, to your point, it would be a good idea to start with a project that doesn't have a lot of colors.
Definitely give silk a try sometime... either a monochromatic design (solid or over-dyed) or a basic color like black or white wherever sheen would be appropriate.
Wanda, a monochromatic design would be a great way to start. Plus silk is either 8 or 12 ply so it isn’t quite as expensive per strand as people think.
I have only used silks when they came in kits and I love them! Currently I am working on a kit from Chessie And Me called stitch girl, which was a class project for the shepherds retreat in 2018. I’m really enjoying it!
I have never used silks! 💗☀️ Praying you find your Blue Corn! Happened to me with a flesh tone needed for only a few stitches. I found it in the pattern bag for the next piece of the series I was working on
Thanks for the encouragement to try silks! I’m going to check out the articles you talked about. Love the pumpkin project too. I would love to try silks!
I am stitching with Missus Sedas silks on My Token of Love.... and loving it... It was lovely visiting with you today Thank you for sharing your Beautiful stitching... are you on f/book? Hope your silk turns up... Happy stitching... xx Louisa...
Louisa, yes we’ve been on Facebook for about 7 years and this is the second year on Instagram. You won the silk! I definitely checked out MissusSedas on Etsy and will be asking her if she sells wholesale. There is always room for more fiber options.
Linda, I think my first experience with silk floss was with a Shepherds Bush kit so I didn’t feel like I spent a lot of money. I think a monochromatic design is the perfect way to start.
Kathryn, the store in Strongsville just started their 75% off sale. Last time I was there I noticed that they had added a ton of close-out merchandise... I left rather quickly:-)
So happy to learn about your channel through the newsletter! Just subscribed. I don't have a local NWS here in NYC, have ordered from you before, and it's nice to see a shot of the shop. I have some experience with silk and would love to try more. When mixing with 2 over 2 on cotton , do you recommend using 1 strand or 2? I love the idea of combining, but have always worried that one would look bulkier than the other. Thanks, Gaea ("Gia") As an aside, I love your highlights. :)
Hi Gia! I remember you:-) When you combine different fibers intended for cross stitch, they are almost always of similar thickness so it should work. But my recent experience with NPI and Splendor has shown me that silks can be different thicknesses. So I guess it would be a good idea to try some samples in the corner of your fabric to be sure you like the effect. Thanks for watching! Shelly
I have never used silk floss but, hear good things from those like to use it. I have however, used silk thread for hand quilting and prefer over cotton. I have this Italian Halloween pattern and look forward to working on it in the next few weeks. Nice informative video. You explain and introduce so many things. Thank You
Leslie, I think my first experience was with Shepherd’s Bush kits as well. Valdani is cotton and it comes in various styles... stranded skeins, three-ply balls and pearl cotton. They tend to be duller than other companies. It is hard to compare colors, but I could try to figure it out for you if you tell me which chart.
Hi Judy! The shop is located in Strongsville, a suburb of Cleveland in Northeast Ohio. Yes, silk floss is separated... the skeins are either 8 or 12 ply.
Yes, silk is s very strong fiber and has held up well on antique samplers. I think the important question is whether the fiber is hand-dyed or not. They tend to have excess dye that can leak out when wet.
Carey, the email address has been in every show notes section. The one I prefer using now is just.stitching13211@gmail.com Thanks for your interest in our newsletter. Shelly

Bobbi, I definitely think silk is easier to work with than the rayon/satin versions.
I have done lots of projects with silk on needlepoint and cross stitch. I have never stitched with silk, but someday want to try❣️
Patsy, white or black would be great investments... think clouds, snow, Santa’s beard, black cat, lettering.
Have not tried silk, a little afraid because of a few negative comments. Love your videos, short and sweet!
Michelle, if it is about price... keep in mind that the silk floss is either 8 or 12 ply so you’re getting more for your money than you think:-)
No not the price, more like it’s difficult to stitch with or it snags on your fingers, or dries out your skin. Everyone is different, just have to try it out myself.

Enjoyed your video! I have not worked with silk.

I have used silk a little. It’s so smooooth. Thanks for making Monday mornings so fun!
Carey, yes! Smooth and luscious, as someone else commented:-)
I love stitching with silks...such a smooth stitch and adds a different texture to the project.
Yes! Texture is not just for needlepoint:-)
What a great giveaway! I have not used silk before, mainly because of the cost, but I would love to try it! I lost a skein of Gentle Arts Cucumber yesterday and it took an hour but I found it. Susan, that’s funny about the cat food dish!
Thank you for all the information on silk floss. I haven’t used silks yet, but I can’t wait to try it. Happy stitching!
Cynthia, I think I forgot to mention that silk floss is either 8 or 12 ply so it is not as expensive per strand as people think.
Another great video just full of good information!!
Pat, thank you so much!

I’ve heard silks are great to work with, nice offer. It would be fun to incorporate them. I like the idea for it being used as Hair,
Dee, yes... it would be so easy to add basic colors to any design wherever you think sheen would be appropriate.
Thank you for the shout out on the project. Ill let dad know he made flosstube he will be sooo confused. But yes i am lucky my dad loves me 😁
Monica, he’s a keeper:-)
Hi Shelly. Thanks for the tips on silks. I have never used silks before. Love your bee pattern and Bethlehem.
Julie, definitely give silk a try sometime! Maybe a monochromatic design or a basic color like black, white or brown wherever sheen would be appropriate.

I’ve never used that floss, but it looks really nice!
Pat, the only problem is that silk finds every crack and dry spot on your hands!
I just ordered my first silk and can't wait to try it.
Yay! Have fun with it, Jeri.
Never used silks before. I have thought about it a few times but didn't do it because of the cost and not knowing if I would like working with them. So, to your point, it would be a good idea to start with a project that doesn't have a lot of colors.

Never tried silk but yes....I want to!
Carol, a monochromatic design would be a great way to start.
I've always wondered about silk. Sounds like it might be a little high maintenance for me, but I'd love to try it!
What? You don’t have time for weekly manicures haha!
I have one project going with silk...love it!
Every time I use it, I think I should use it more often!
I love your bee project! I haven’t worked with silk before but would love to try it! ❤️
Definitely give silk a try sometime... either a monochromatic design (solid or over-dyed) or a basic color like black or white wherever sheen would be appropriate.
