A bloodthirsty mob shamed by the innocence of a child. Scout, Jem and Dill are heroes, they basically saved Tom’s life here. Scout appeals to Mr Cunningham’s humanity and better nature, because I think deep down he’s a good man who simply made a bad decision. I’m honestly not trying to trivialise the issue of extrajudicial killings either, so I apologise if I’ve given anyone that impression. I guess my main point here is that the mob mentality does terrible things to the individual. Maybe Mr Cunningham truly believed that Tom was guilty, although that still doesn’t excuse lynching Tom or whatever it was the mob was planning to do to him. Lynching is a terrible atrocity and a horrible way for somebody to die. It was used against black and white people but predominantly against black people. To this day, as far as I’m aware, the United States still has not made lynching a federal crime. It’s a shame Tom was still sent to prison even though he was clearly innocent, and then shot dead while trying to escape.
English is not my first lenguaje so while reading this book I got to this exact part and found it interesting the description of all having their jaws opened as scout said the entailment lines 😅 I needed to go check what that meant - normally I would keep going and understand the whole, getting the idea of what it says and move forward, but this seemed important… thanks for sharing these cuts from the movie! Amazing feeling watching the characters alive!! 😝 you know what I mean
I'm nearly 80 and the the main title music to Mockingbird is perhaps the most beautiful wonderful piece of music I have ever heard. I play it frequently, and have seen the movie maybe 5 or 6 times. I guess I think the movie is surely one of the best made. And the book was voted the best book of the 20th century by the Library Association. All in all, it might be the best book, movie, and soundtrack of the last century. If you are reading this, and haven't immersed yourself in this wonderful story, do yourselves a favor and read, watch or listen to the sublime "To Kill a Mockingbird" You will be enthralled!!!
"Made"? In this day they would have *let* Scout continue her tomboy behavior and *let* her figure out her own sexuality as she matures. What about that is wrong to you?
Imagine if the timing had been just a little off and the kids has left a minute or two before the “gang” arrived. I wonder if Atticus would have come out unscathed.
It's pretty likely that they would've killed or beaten Atticus for even daring to honestly defend Robinson in the first place. Lynch mobs made very little distinction between African Americans and White Americans opposed to segregation well into the 60s.
So much of this film feels unreal, and this is one of the examples. I can scarcely believe an armed, racist lynch mob either in 1930whenever or today would feel shamed by the innocent words of a little girl and give up this easily. The pack of thugs would more likely shove the three of them out of the way and continue to go after their target.
That is one of the best scenes in all of movie history.
Watching as an adult hits far different than a young teen
I know what you mean. It was a scary, Halloweeney movie to scare ourselves with as kids. Nothing wrong with that.
2:33 the shot moving through the crowd, from the child's perspective. Amazing cinematography!

This movie needs to be rerun in theaters in honor of its 60th anniversary.

@@jimramsey8660 i second that motion!
And a child ......
In this day they would have made scout turn into a boy. Wtf is wrong with this world today?

26 likes and no comments?? Ok....
Honor thy neighbor as you would want them to honor you. That’s what Scout did in this situation.

The Great White Hope.
