Such a huge amount of lost history and memories, that Derwent Hall was a fantastic place. It must have been heartbreaking for the old villagers to return and see the place they grew up in just flooded.

WoW ! I have so many questions, I have wanted to visit England since I was a kid, the US is only 3 - 4 hundred years and my town founded in 1889 and nothing is older. But I never had a opportunity to go. This is incredible and the Dam is Beautiful. Thank you for the series of the Ladybower Reservoir.
Another great video. As I've previously said, I became fascinated in the lost villages during 1976's drought and my interest never diminishes. Even so, through your narration and obvious interest, your videos bring the past to life. Thank you.
I get many mixed emotions watching these amazing videos. I'm sad for all the people who lost their homes to make way for the reservoir. I'm alarmed by how low the water has got this year, and by our changing climate. Conversely, I'm fascinated by the amazing finds and history that have been uncovered by the drought. Amazing series of videos! Can't help thinking, with all the rain we've being having of late, that all of this will be lost below the depths again soon.

I'll go up and around Derwent Reservoir once the paths are open again as there are little areas to explore and also once Ladybower is full again I'd like to do a comparison video. Another goodun and thanks. Visited Derwent many times as a child. B1947 and teenager but during that time water levels were never as low as they have been your last summer so your vids for me have been really interesting. My father worked at the English Steel Corporation River Don works in Brightside as a turner and as a kid I remember him telling me a story related to him by one of the old labourers at the works who had been involved with the removal of the bodies from the Derwent grave yard prior to the flooding. The tale goes that he had dug down and uncovered one of the coffins and on removing the lid was horrified to find that the hair on the skeleton inside along with the finger nails had kept on growing long after it had been burried. This guy was so alarmed that in a panic he tried to scramble out of the grave but in his haste lost his footing and fell back into the grave. On the spot he quit his job and refused to go back.
That sense of wonder, from childhood documentaries on TV has been dead for a few years. People like you are bringing it back online! Quality work as always!👏👏

That was an absolutely fantastic series of videos. I used to visit Ladybower when I was younger with my parents but the water levels were much higher and now that the levels had dropped to what they were in the video I'm unable to visit due to ill health so thank you for taking us all there with you and allowing us to share your experiences........
My father in law can remember regularly driving past the reservoir when the church steeple was still standing, obviously could only be seen when the water levels dropped. His memories of those times were when the water dropped low enough and it exposed the church’s steeple you could here the bells ringing as the water moved them!! He said it was quite eerie when travelling past at night and you heard it🤷🏻♂️

Ant, on the last video I watched, you were contemplating the parallel concrete lines at Ladybower and speculating as to their use. On this one, you look at the stream feeding Derwent Resevoir, which had been modified and a new wall built. Is it just me, or does the width of the old route of the feeder look the same as the one you were musing over? Irregardless, a fantastic video. Top notch. Absolutely top class video as always Ant. Have loved every minute of this fascinating series. Was hoping there’d be a Part 5. So much history uncovered which gives us an idea of how life was before the reservoir. The old photos are great, but the ones of the old church spire on its own are quite chilling. Will definitely look at visiting during the next drought. Incidentally, what drone do you use? The shots were rock steady considering the strong wind. I have a DJI Mini 2 which would probably struggle in those conditions. Keep up the good work 👍🏼😁

Lovely film Ant. Such fitting music. You've showed so much. Now this really is the extent of the drop in level. I was there a few weeks ago and even then the mud was scary (with wellies), so easy to get stuck. Lovely photography and drone work.
Thank you so much for doing this video, I used to explore this area many years ago but I am now unable due to disabilities, so you are effectively getting me out into the countryside! If you return again would it be possible for you to retrace the old roads around Derwent village, like the old lane right outside the Vicarage gates. I would love to travel the lanes and paths that the villagers of Derwent once trod. Shirley Lynch is spot on you are much better than most TV documentaries, I doff my hat to you Sir!

So glad I found this channel by chance due to a video based in Norfolk. This series on Derwent is fascinating and well presented. I have seen other videos about this reservoir but none match the level of detail telling the story of lost communities eighty years ago. I don't know how true it is, but someone told me once that a village in Wales is still visible underwater in a reservoir or lake. Anyone heard of it.

Enjoyed your videos, those drone pictures of the hall gardens were amazing. Even after eighty years, mostly under water, the layout of the paths were still evident. Looks like the rain has started so maybe won't get any lower. In 1975, it was much lower, the river in the area where the village was was just a narrow ditch. My wife to be and I actually sat on the Lover's Seat, the week before we married. The seat was high and dry then. Been back several times since but never seen it as low since.
At the 15:00 mark, I don't think that that is a footprint, I think that someone lobbed a heavy stone into the soft mud and it leaves the resulting splat ! How rude of me, I should have said thanks first, for a superb update to show us those areas that we were unable to get to before. Good job Ant
Hi Ant, I have somehow ‘stumbled’ on your channel, and I am so glad I did I’m writing because I want you to know how valuable you are to some people, especially me I live near Worksop, so an afternoon’s drive to Ladybower and a stroll round, with the dog, would be ideal However, at the moment I have three slipped disks and am awaiting surgery, my fourth since 2000 and hopefully the last I can, just about manage Creswell Crags, down the road from me, it’s flattish and not many rocks, so, if you ever do Creswell, let me know and I’ll buy you lunch So, when the weather is crap and you don’t feel like doing a video, think of me, it’s my escape Thankyou for ALL your HARD work, researching, flying the drone and everything xx
Thanks for taking the time to video the area at its lowest water level. This video will stand the test of time and show future generations what was lost in the name of progress. I wonder what they will think of a society that destroyed a beautiful Hall that today would be listed as a national treasure, and an entire village of people with their love of their homes and farms, just so that people with no connection to the place can turn on a water tap?

You may be the first person to film that cellar since it was built , well done its probably flooded now . glad you went . don't forget the pump house and the channel leading to and from it
It's been a thoroughly enjoyable couple of months. Now I have to find another obsession 🙂 I got lucky with the cellar I left it until the very last day before the heavy rain arrived on the Sunday. Levels were up by mid week so I pretty much got to film it at it's lowest 🙂
I lived not far from there as a kid and would go there in the early 70s with my parents. I don't have too many memories but I do clearly remember standing at one end of the dam and looking down at exposed brickwork at the base of the dam wall. Would love to go back there and compare the picture I have in my mind with how it looks now.
Only watched this video as Ant is an old school friend and this sort of thing wouldn’t normally interest me!! I’ve now subscribed and will watch old videos and any new upcoming ones keep up the good work mate 👍🏻

Ant, on the last video I watched, you were contemplating the parallel concrete lines at Ladybower and speculating as to their use. On this one, you look at the stream feeding Derwent Resevoir, which had been modified and a new wall built. Is it just me, or does the width of the old route of the feeder look the same as the one you were musing over? Irregardless, a fantastic video. Top notch. I am so glad you were randomly suggested by UA-cam. Best tangent I've ever been on. Thank you for sharing. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Absolutely top class video as always Ant. Have loved every minute of this fascinating series. Was hoping there’d be a Part 5. So much history uncovered which gives us an idea of how life was before the reservoir. The old photos are great, but the ones of the old church spire on its own are quite chilling.
Will definitely look at visiting during the next drought.
Incidentally, what drone do you use? The shots were rock steady considering the strong wind. I have a DJI Mini 2 which would probably struggle in those conditions.

If you return again would it be possible for you to retrace the old roads around Derwent village, like the old lane right outside the Vicarage gates. I would love to travel the lanes and paths that the villagers of Derwent once trod. Shirley Lynch is spot on you are much better than most TV documentaries, I doff my hat to you Sir!

So glad I found this channel by chance due to a video based in Norfolk. This series on Derwent is fascinating and well presented. I have seen other videos about this reservoir but none match the level of detail telling the story of lost communities eighty years ago. I don't know how true it is, but someone told me once that a village in Wales is still visible underwater in a reservoir or lake. Anyone heard of it.

Enjoyed your videos, those drone pictures of the hall gardens were amazing. Even after eighty years, mostly under water, the layout of the paths were still evident.
Looks like the rain has started so maybe won't get any lower. In 1975, it was much lower, the river in the area where the village was was just a narrow ditch. My wife to be and I actually sat on the Lover's Seat, the week before we married. The seat was high and dry then. Been back several times since but never seen it as low since.
At the 15:00 mark, I don't think that that is a footprint, I think that someone lobbed a heavy stone into the soft mud and it leaves the resulting splat !

I live near Worksop, so an afternoon’s drive to Ladybower and a stroll round, with the dog, would be ideal
However, at the moment I have three slipped disks and am awaiting surgery, my fourth since 2000 and hopefully the last
I can, just about manage Creswell Crags, down the road from me, it’s flattish and not many rocks, so, if you ever do Creswell, let me know and I’ll buy you lunch
So, when the weather is crap and you don’t feel like doing a video, think of me, it’s my escape

Thanks for taking the time to video the area at its lowest water level. This video will stand the test of time and show future generations what was lost in the name of progress. I wonder what they will think of a society that destroyed a beautiful Hall that today would be listed as a national treasure, and an entire village of people with their love of their homes and farms, just so that people with no connection to the place can turn on a water tap?

You may be the first person to film that cellar since it was built , well done its probably flooded now . glad you went . don't forget the pump house and the channel leading to and from it
It's been a thoroughly enjoyable couple of months. Now I have to find another obsession 🙂 I got lucky with the cellar I left it until the very last day before the heavy rain arrived on the Sunday. Levels were up by mid week so I pretty much got to film it at it's lowest 🙂

I lived not far from there as a kid and would go there in the early 70s with my parents. I don't have too many memories but I do clearly remember standing at one end of the dam and looking down at exposed brickwork at the base of the dam wall. Would love to go back there and compare the picture I have in my mind with how it looks now.
Only watched this video as Ant is an old school friend and this sort of thing wouldn’t normally interest me!! I’ve now subscribed and will watch old videos and any new upcoming ones keep up the good work mate 👍🏻
