- Martens are nocturnal, elusive, shy, and extremely intelligent, and let’s not forget cute. But they are also predatory animals that can kill considerably larger snowshoe hares and marmots. Have you ever seen a Marten in action? If you haven’t, you should watch, as we countdown 15 brutal moments when martens kill and eat almost everything.

Martens
When fully grown, the Formosan Muntjac weighs around twenty-five pounds and looks like a medium- to large-sized brown dog. It's a little bigger than a Marten, but that doesn't bother this yellow-throated Marten in the least. This Marten keeps running around the Formosan and if I didn’t know better, I would think they were playing and having fun, as most kindergarten children do at the park. But once the fun and games are over, the marten jumps the Formosan like any predatory cat would jump an antelope and bites deeply into its skin, making the Formosan scream in pain. The Formosan jumps up and manages to rid itself of the marten, but only for a few seconds until the marten delivers the deadly blow and kills the Formosan.
Sometimes Martens don’t get along with their own species and you can see what I mean in this video, filmed in the evening, when two martens are going at it, in the middle of the street. They're wrestling and tumbling, all over the place without conceding an inch to their opponent. One of the Martens seems to be taking over the fight and begins to chase the other all over the street. They are lucky there isn’t too much traffic at this time of night, or they could be dealing with more danger. From across the street, it looks like one of the martens has left the premises.
Marten Vs Birds
Small mammals such as red squirrels, red-backed voles, meadow mice, white-footed mice, snowshoe hares, and marmots make up most of their diet, which varies seasonally. Birds, eggs, insects, berries, beechnuts, and carrion are all eaten by martens depending on availability and season. Martens will attack a blackbird’s nest when it locates one. This mom takes care of her chicks and makes sure they are okay. A little later, during nightfall, mom briefly leaves the nest and the chicks unattended. That’s when a marten crawls up to the nest, sticks his head through the crack, and begins to swallow the chicks one by one until the nest is completely empty. Upon the blackbird’s return, she sees the empty nest and is stupefied.
Maybe she should have gotten a babysitter before going out with her friends. This Kestrel is having a quiet evening with her four chicks and is unaware of what is about to happen. A marten jumps inside the nest and kills the mother by suffocating it, after which, she looks around the nest. It doesn’t look like the mother is dead, and the chicks are left there alive when the marten jumps out of the nest. The marten returns and begins transporting the chicks, one at a time out of the nest, probably to a more secure area. The marten also dabbles with the mom again, probably to make sure it is dead and then continues retrieving the remaining chicks. Finally, the marten grabs the biggest prize, the mother, and carries it out of the nest to store with the rest of the family. This pine marten grabs a bird and eats it, on top of this nest. The bird is tiny, but it’s just perfect for the marten. A second Marten joins in on the fun, but it doesn’t look like the first martenwants to share its kill, so the second marten leaves.

When the Martin is on the back of its prey biting the neck, it is not “suffocating” the animal. It’s chewing through its neck to severe the spinal cord.
I think what's so scary about that isn't the fact that it's paralyzing the animal, it's the fact that it knows how to do that.
I was so pissed when he continued saying „suffocating” every time that happened, like wtf?
@@D.A.A.321 me too lol

Jaguars actually do this with large caiman in South America, they learned how to bite the back of the gators head to sever the spine

@@Hero-oz9gx I never said that all animal had no emotion. animals have sentience and emotion, some more some less. but its incredibly ignorant to look at animals through a human lens and try to interpret their feelings by comparing them to us. we are completely different. birds are far less sentient with far less emotional range. its incredibly foolish to try to decipher animal emotion by using our own patterns.
It's such a badass that they gave it a doctorate and named a shoe after it.
I have never heard of a marten, but I will never forget them. They're absolutely ferocious hunters. If they were as big as a medium dog, I think humans would be in serious trouble.

good reaction speed as well.
It is not "Go-Shawk". It's Gos-Hawk.... like Goss Hawk.
And Martins do not attack the throat. They destroy the back of the neck, the spine. The very base of the skull.
Martins are cousins of the Wolverine. Ferocious!!! (And Stoat also)

Nature is unbelievably cruel right...luckily though I don’t think most of these animals think and feel too much the sort of just react and act on instincts.
The narrator is so funny. The way he pronounces squirrel, macaque, and goshawk is priceless.
Pine Martens are common in my area, we also have Fishers, they are in the same family but are much bigger. A full grown martin is about 3 lbs, a male fisher can weigh up the 15 lbs. They are incredibly fast and are the only mammal fast enough to chase and run down red squirrels in trees. I've seen quite a few martens around my home or when out hunting, but have only seen fishers about 5 times. I do run into their tracks in the snow often.

Marten: And I took that personally.
That video showing the Marten killing the mother hawk and all 4 of her chicks is crazy!!
It really displays the speed, intelligence & fury of the Marten. It attacked and killed the mother hawk first with a lightning quick bite to her throat and then instantly turned its attention to the 4 chicks.
The mother fluttered around helplessly and watched it carry off all 4 of her children as she slowly bled out from the lethal wound to her throat. Then she herself got carried off.
What an incredibly savage video 😮
If this were a human, bleeding out from the throat while her sleeping babies were taking away by terrifying larger furry monster... God help us.
You can see the mother hawk actually bleeding out, and trying feebly to cover her babies with her wing as she is dying.

Your voice is more ferocious than the marten 😂
I keep polecats and ferrets . I have 64 of the buggers and they live in a 30 ' trailer on my farm . Once they pulled up a bit of the floor as it was rotten where they peed on it . I also have 29 chickens . They been out all night and never touched any of my birds and they all came back within a few minutes of calling them . These animals and the Martens are so clever they know what to do and what's good for them . There's a mink who had a go at my ducks but the smell of the ferrets puts them at a distance . I don't think the mink wants trouble with 64 ferrets .
Ferret army
So what if a couple Martin's faced against a couple Otters 🤔 💭
He was talking about the other animal being the size of a medium sized dog not the marten.

it's cute , but imagine if martens is over populated the ecosystem would be screwed . but damn what an agility they have . so martens are like a mixture of a monkey + cat + dogs + raccoon + weasel + ferrets + honey badger , like they eat almost everything they want to eat and have a feature of em all .
Just Yuyun martens *are
Imagine how dangerous the marten would be had they been the size of a human. That could be the making of the next horror movie.
But not possible i think, because of the metabolism. A marten as big as a human would not find enough food and would starve to death.
@@zergling800 There's plenty of cows, horses, and variouse other large animals that the marten could eat.
@@danielalvarez8729 true but the Wolverine also feeds on such large prey and he is only as tall as a dog. But maybe before humans reached the american continent when there have been sloths bigger than horses maybe such a Predator existed.

I hate this animal! Once Martens came into my house in the country and killed 3 newborn kittens. The damned beast had decapitated them! Days later the monster returned and I managed to hit it with sticks and kill it! The next day a peasant passed by and took the body of the animal and he told me that it was a delicatessen to eat it!
I just saw for the first time the animal that ate my grandma's chicken from time to time...
Waow amazing 👍
Narration a little weird. Mispronounces "gos'hawk" persistently in a way I've not heard before and insists that martens kill by suffocation which I do not believe. If they killed by suffocation they would hold their prey by the front of the neck. ODD.
Totally agree with the droning voice, mispronunciations and lack of knowledge on the subject he was covering. But like a lot of the stuff on UA-cam likes come before facts every time. I'm always telling my kids to fact check anything they see on this channel.
