- Muffler Tech has been in business for almost 21 years and catalytic converter replacement is a huge part of our business. The stolen cat epidemic has been prevalent in our region since 2008, the Prius has joined other vehicles in being a target for this unfortunate act and we have become the premier shop in Sacramento to help with the replacement. This video is to educate people on how they’re doing it, how to help prevent it, and hopefully help you decide that we are the best shop to help you with the replacement.
If you want more detail on the theft prevention and an update on what we offer, see this video:

Muffler tech is the best muffler shop in Sacramento! Colby, Matt and the staff rock!
Phenomenal video. I work for Dollar Tow and have towed atleast 35 priuses in the last 3 months. Ill refer them to your shop starting now and moving forward. Thank you for such an informative video.
Thanks so much!
Great information and great video! I will be posting this video as reference for some of my neighbors that had their converters stolen.
Excellent! There has been a string of these out here and I was questioning how they could do it and couldn't believe they could be that fast. This was very insformational, I'm going to peak under my Corolla to see if it is vulnerable.
$5,000 reward for the reporting and capture of illegal recycle centers, there is no honor among Thieves they will report on themselves, thieves are like cockroaches and will turn in their own mother for a buck, it's as simple as that, problem solved

Thanks a lot for your time to make those videos and the idea you come with to protect the catalytic from stealing, I already had a level 1 shield that I made it last year and I got my Catalytic stolen last Sanday... So I will see you soon and thanks to Lord you're just 3 hours away from me.
My cat converter is stolen too, and I have to drive 1.5 hr from SF to SAC. Do you know if you can get pulled over for not having cat converter?
Had my catalytic converter stolen off my Prius twice...within six months!!! Wish I’d known about these theft deterrents after the first one.
Where and when did these thefts happen? (Where was the Prius parked and about what time did these thefts occur?)
@@13ghosts18 in Mid-town Sacramento, mid-summer 2020 and January 2021. Parked in the street, directly in front of an apartment, on a fairly busy street and occurred during early morning hours.
@@janelleberryman-nosik8246 Oh wow, did you witness it being stolen during early morning hours or did you mean that you first noticed that the catalytic converter was missing in the morning when you started the car to leave for work?
You have a great voice! You sound like a professional ! pretty cool, relaxed and articulate.
He sounds like Brian Williams.
Thanks for the kind words
Good knowledge. Thanks!
Great video. Just had this happen to me and I learned alot about what (I may need ) to do to get on the road again.
Best Cage I've seen yet. GREAT VIDEO Thank you for posting. I Subed.
very good and informative video. Thank you
Thanks for the video . 👍
Great vid. You're a good speaker.
Kansas City, they just got mine too. IM SOO PISSED OFF been a week!!
Add a catalytic converter cable lock and they will move to the next car everytime. I thought about putting a larger pipe around the exhaust pipe that is not attached so the pipe cutter just spins but it would create a rattle. What is stopping them from just unbolting both ends and removing the entire section? Hard to see if there is any room that would allow this.
My 2005 is ready for parts how much can I sell the car for? What is value of the catalytic converter?
For a moment, I thought Mike Rowe was talking! LOL
Is it only on Prius that this is happening? I drive a Yaris! please help
Hi do you ship to the uk thanks.
Hey Colby is it safe to drive a vehicle temporarily to the shop with the cat removed? Thanks!
If you have a gen 1 or 2 car absolutely. See my other videos, I have one specific to this topic.
Hello, thanks for your video, I have a Prius of the 1st generation and a catalytic converter was stolen, my car began to eat a lot of gasoline, I made a straight pipe from the engine to the muffler, but I still have the error p1436 there is a hanging tube for air regulation, how can I solve this issue. ? I have a smog check for another two years.
Hi Leo. Unfortunately I have no experience with solutions to these issues as we don’t do anything other then replace the cat. It is illegal for us to participate in repairing a vehicle without one.
I don't understand why don't install an alarm system?
Sir Do you use aftermarket catalytic converters?? It’s something wrong is use aftermarket??? Check light ?
Of course, on vehicles that are legal to do so.
My 2006 Honda Element catalytic converter just got stolen today, how much do you charge for replacement?
Hey I can only speak for the Prius, but they run $1500-$2500 if you need one to pass in California.
Good theft solutions...
I have an '07 Prius that this happened to. Would like to avoid it happening again and get my driveway spot back! How can I get the cage? Do I need to drive to Sac from SJ?
Chris Johnson we can ship you our shield, bolts, and rod if you’d like. Have you seen our theft prevention video?
@@mufflertech I did watch the vid. Was that this one here? Or could you send the link to that video please? I thought it was a good informative video.

@@mufflertech Great Vid there. So what is the cost delivered for your theft prevention setup?
Do you guys have options for Element owners?
Absolutely, please see our channel, we have an element video
I'm in Allentown, PA. And my Prius Catalytic converter was stolen over the weekend. I need to find someone around here who can do what you just showed.
Michael Jones we can ship you all the components you need.
@@mufflertech How much would the components be? I also don't know where to take it. I do work in a car dealership, but it's a Ford dealership. I don't know if the Service Center would install aftermarket parts on a Prius.
Where I can find that in NJ?!
We have been shipping our products. If you’re interested call us at the shop 916-421-0399
Man Colby sounds like Mike Rowe
Do you sell the cage thing to the public and is it feasible for a home-handyman to install? If so, can you give me some sort of contact information?
My cat was just taken because of the price, the thief effectively totaled my car (local dealership quoted $3200). If I manage the replacement myself then I can afford it but then they'll just take it again so I was looking for a way to prevent that. I wish I was in your area so I could just have this done but unfortunately I'm in Los Angeles.
By the way, thanks a ton for posting this vid and sharing this info.
Of course, thanks for watching!
Call the shop on Monday, we can ship you our products. 916-421-0399
Can I get one of those cat protectors, the red one.
That cage would probably improve handling due to better chassis rigidity.
I wouldn't mind getting one for my autocross car. Lol
Some scumbags stole both my catalytic converters off my Jeep Liberty. It’s not just happening to Prius.
Mine stolen 1-20-2021 around 3:00pm in Spring Texas
Just walk by and push the release key on the jack while that scum is still under the car. Then walk away .
Why u let him walk away u should it run him over no one will miss him lol 😂 I just got mine stolen today that’s not cool
@@josebarragan6627 i feel you man. Got mine stolen too... big F*CK!
fukking got mine stolen today...... and didn't know about these laws. what happen if install an after market non oem one? god i like to run over them f.. thieves with my prius.
My neighbor just had his stolen! it was done in front of his home! and it cot $4,000+ !!
How much for a 2018 Prius?
2018 is not a theft priority yet . .
Weird thing...you can buy a California compliant Cat for the Prius if you are not in California. The issue is, you can't have it shipped to California either. Ridiculous.
Actually the o2 sensors do have value they have platinum and palladium each sensor is worth about 1 doller
Good to know, my cat got stolen from my prius.
This video gives me another reason to be glad I don't live in CA. Mine was stolen...replaced it for $130.00 using an aftermarket direct-fit. No CEL and it drives perfectly.
Yeah, and is there almost 40 million people in your state? If not, probably don't have to worry about pollution, right? Wasn't that long ago in the 90's where Los Angeles's sky was just smog--no blue sky--does your state have that problem?
Where can I find one in Minnesota? They stole my catalytic converter this morning!
Mine was stolen too from my Prius yesterday here in NJ and Toyota dealer wants S3800 to fix it. God I'm broke.
Same thing happened to me in Minneapolis this week.
That’s what u get for living in a rubbish state
what's the cost for a new catalytic converter ?
200$ but man hours is 1500$ easy.
@@secretpersond8324 man hours is under an hour total.
its easy to steal and easy to repair
oem gen 2 prius cat is $2500 for C.A.
yea, but are those rivets stainless? they look like aluminum. They can drill those aluminum ones in a minute. They'll have the tool. No emissions in my county so i covered my universal replacement cat with an old stop sign. perfect fit. Covered screw heads with steel epoxy.
Yes. And they may have the tool. But they would need many others to get through all the other measures. We have a lot of data to show our system prevents theft. Keep in mind you could argue if they want the part bad enough they can just steal the entire car.
Excellent video thanks for the phone number. Can you ship that red cage? That looks like the best option. I would be concerned about trapped heat with the other style the plates the cats get
wicked hot. i will call you.
how much? the cage for my prius 2013.
Jose Martinez we haven’t developed a cage for the gen 3 car yet. We are working closely with a different manufacturer and should have something soon. Subscribe to my channel for updates!
Hello, do you have a cage
for a 2006 prius? If so can you please tell me the cost ? I would appreciate that .
Denisha Hill we do, $299 installed
@@mufflertech I'm interested if you do. Lmk when you come up with something for gen 3
UK Are having theirs stolen too
In Sweden too
@@keninswed same happened yesterday
mine was stolen 11/272021 in Portland
I like that cage .....How much?
retro fit it with 10mm bolts. it will never be stolen again
?
This shit just happened to me yesterday
Well I just spent 3 grand for an after market converter in California. Guess im going to fail smog? The dude told me it would pass smog tho. So here’s hoping he will at least give me my money back if it fails
There are now a couple of aftermarkets on the list that are legal, watch: ua-cam.com/video/cfhEYG2i4oM/v-deo.html. They are more expensive than the OEM though. If the shop is licensed by the BAR they are legally obligated to sell you a legal cat. If they're a shade tree outfit you're on your own.
@@mufflertech whew ok. Thank you for clarifying! Actually now it’s 4 grand but I will make sure it passes smog before I pay everything
Had a set of cat stolen out of an astro van a couple years ago. also had a few customers come in with cats stolen. one was a buick rendezvous, I remember a few hondas, and a blazer 4x4 someone attempted to steal the cat but failed. Seems around me the easier ones are getting stolen. I'm waiting for the day someone tries to take the pair out of my S10... would be the biggest waste of their time LOL.
Nice hopefully they not getting newr Prius lol
Is this just common to California, or is this a national trend?
I don't live in California.
How much money are these people making stealing these?
It must be profitable.
The California compliant cats cost around $2000 while for most other states it's a couple hundred dollars. There are more precious metals in them so it happens a lot in California but nowhere else is immune.
This is an epidemic here in Sweden 🇸🇪 now. Just got mine back. Here in Sweden the cops say they get about $130
i had salvage title prius 2008 in ca so when cat was stolen I had to weld straight pipe
as you know the new one is 3500 and car is not worth that much. but funny thing is thieves dont know that there is no catalyc converter so they cut straight pipe and stole that one too so I had to weld it again. I know it will not pass inspection but I had my inspection 3 months ago so I have another 1 1/2 year to drive. I am not democrate so not big fan of green new deal and they made laws to help criminals I don't feel as guilty as I should be. car runs fine I see engine ligst but no other issues.
Your party assignment has nothing to do with it. Your position on the environment does. If you believe the hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and NOX are not things that matter then so be it. I understand your resistance to spending the high cost of repair on a low value vehicle, my suggestion would be to get an aftermarket part for the interim so your at least not hurting the planet. You will also solve your check engine light with this idea. I'm not bashing you, just trying to be responsible in advice. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)
I have an outlander, and my catalytic converter was stolen

The irony of this video is it demonstrates to thieves how to cut the cat out and what tools they'll need.
There was a lot of theft way before we published this video. We have successfully been able to mitigate more thefts by educating the public of the problem. The Prius is no longer the number one car for theft in our region.
Is it me, or is this a how-to video in disguise??
I’m sorry you feel that way. I made this video well after the thefts of these parts became rampant. I don’t know how else to help people protect themselves without showing the methods in which they steal these.
@@mufflertech Hey, I am so thankful for your insightful video. I was simply making a joke. This happened to me recently, so I was just making light of the situation with some humor.
What is there to know? You cut 2 ends and take what you need.
Genius all u did was give a class on how to steal them with the exact tools WOW
Thanks for your opinion. We were doing 3-5 of these cars a day way before I released this video. I think it’s valuable to let people know how they’re doing it so they can be prepared and protect themselves. Are you mad at the news for reporting all the thefts? Wouldn’t they be giving people the idea to start stealing them? We live in the Information Age like it or not.
When will everybody understand that the thiefs are very well trained to steal those catalitic converters and they don't steal fot the what is inside 90 % of catalitic converter stolen have never been sold for money . Those are only stolen on demand to decrease Toyota value on the market
vali ddra that’s an interesting perspective. I can tell you that all the data we have points to the desirability of the part is specific to the precious metals that are inside.
@@mufflertech hope you are right
Have you had an prius prime catalitic converter stolen
@@mufflertech so does these parts/metals go to the military complex? curious
Don't buy a Prius problem solved
There are all kinds of cars, trucks and SUVs that are prone to cat theft, so there’s that.
