New Zealand's Ella Yelich-O'Connor, the singer-songwriter known as Lorde, is progressive, thoughtful and subtle in both music and presentation. The Kiwi musician joins Jian to discuss how it feels to be in the international limelight. She also reacts to all the headlines calling her the "Anti-Miley" and explains why, different as they are, she doesn't like that label. - Розваги
Parents take note: This is what happens when you buy your kids books!
She's different. She's normal. I can't explain what normal is. She's 17. She uses her voice only. No autotune. So what if you think she's weird. People are so used to epic performances on stage and people changing their voices in the studio. She, Lorde, stands alone. She wants to do her OWN work. I'm proud of her. She's unique and beautiful.
Can't believe how eloquent she is. Good interview.
Damn i'm in love with this mysterious girl! she's so smart, beautiful and talent, hope she can handle all the succes and keep it up doing music!
lets just hope she doesnt pull a bieber move when shes 19
Mw2magnet Beiber has the IQ of a 12yr old-lorde has the IQ of a 30yr old already so i think she will be fine..
lol
I think she will be fine too, just listen a couple more interviews and you can notice how smart she is!
cooper paleman omg IQ has nothing to do with age.........
People are saying she seems uncomfortable in this interview but I actually feel like she's really genuine and I really like it. C=
She's so humble and mysterious and not to mention ADORABLE
She's thrown with questions like "When did you realize it's a big hit" or "what makes you so great" at the time, but really it seems to me that she doesn't care about fame and rank or whatever. She just enjoys what she does and just have fun~~
its nice to hear from someone young who has a good head on her shoulders.
She's got such an expressive face. I hope she continues to believe in herself and her talent.
She's really interesting, and the way she dances is too
what a kind old soul , in a young girl .
She should definitely try becoming an actress, so beautiful
Omg she should.
this interview is the pinnacle of asmr for me, omg so many tingles haha
***** God dammit trump
Same here i love her voice she would be perfect asmr shes so chill
She seems so grounded and normal. I admire her creativity.
I just don't why people are ripping on her for looking older than she is and also being so clever for such a young person. I honestly don't know why people choose to rip on someone for these traits. I see it as a refreshing change of pace from todays pop stars (Not saying there is anything wrong with Miley, Katy Perry etc), I just like to see realistic people in the pop charts i guess!
She is so striking, both physically and mentally and I think that's pretty awesome
I think what's great about her is that people, Jian included, think everything has such meaning, but hearing her you can tell that she's not like that. She lives in the now and is very aware of herself, but just a great young woman.
Nirvana was pretty simple chords etc. So theres a point. Shes talented, she's epic and the best personality ive seen in the music industry for a very very long time, probably since Kurt Kobain. Just that down to earthness, that barely any of them have. Shes refreshing. But you have to admit, theres a TON of luck here. Shes won lotto.
Agree :)
This girl is just something else, and I think it's amazing. I wouldn't think her music could top the charts, as it is nothing like the other "pop" artists. I'm normally not a "pop" fan, but I'm definitely a Lorde fan. :)
Jian Ghomeshi has one of the most soothing voices out there and combined with Lorde's it's like heaven.
YES, I ...concur. Nice, soothing voice. AND, he doesn't hmmm make those ... annoying little acknowledged comments between sentences. Like... um-ah , yes, OKAY etc.
You know?? A lot of interviews do that. Get ME? Simply , let the person complete the thought FIRST, then Y O U (the Interview , speaks). Follow?
I could listen to her talking for hours
I love her so much, shes so real and genuine. And you can tell at that part when shes asked about Pop and other artists and how she contrasts with them, how much she wants to just speak her mind and say how a lot of pop music is trash and her music speaks volumes of truth on how teen life really can be. Like she knows her music is amazing and raw and truthful.
She's such a one of a kind artist. I can't wait to see what the future holds for her. The grammy award winning artist.
I didn't like her at first, but after watching interviews, she is very humble and talented and I am glad that she is representing NZ in a proud way. Love ya Lorde!
It’s very refreshing to see a true original. Lorde has proven that success can be based on personal, uncompromising standards.
I feel like this interviewer is terrified of all of his guests being offended by his questions
***** I try to go against the grain and say many offensive things. Though it's tough to get away with in Vancouver because everyone is so facking sensitive.
In Canada we're all very sensitive to how we're perceived. It's a cultural thing. (It's part of why europeans find us so endearing.)
He gets guests to really open up by being so nice to them. The questions are all open-ended opportunities to spill something horrible/intimate/insane.
DanimalLawlz What you're doing could also be called 'being a dick' - so I could see why people were sensitive around you.
nah, its a CBC libtard thing... get this chick on the Corus radio network on The Rutherford show and shed be at fistacuffs in a bat of an eyelash. XD
She is not easy to interview at first. Still, lets remember that we like her lyrics/songs and she has done so at age seventeen. How do other seventeen-year-old's do in interviews?! Have you ever heard an interview with Taylor Swift? I think Lorde is being herself, with confidence, making complete sentences, and has a style of her own. I am looking forward to her future creations.
I LOVE when great things happen to great people with great dreams.
I could listen to Lorde all day.
glad she got to cover Bowie, given her words in this interview I can't imagine what it meant to her
She is awkward here, but I cannot say I blame her! She was thrust into the spotlight at such a young age. It must be stressful to become a world phenomenon so quickly. She is still very well spoken, just a little halting in her answers. I agree with her that artists should not compete, they are all different, some like to be more sexual in their performances and some are more modest. To each their own! I think she is very sexy in her own way, especially the primal way she dances and performs. Sex appeal is not just about taking your clothes of, it is about your personality and aura.
I don't think she is awkward or feels so? She just doesn't reply to questions and speak in a way that she's 'supposed' to feel obligated to
Norma June YEAH SHES JUST BEING HERSELF MICHEELLLE COME ON! COME ON ! SHES JUST BEING DIFFERENT ALRIGHT? fuck.
i think she honestly just looks like she is tired
lol
I dont really feel like she wants a sex appeal to rise off of her
Searra Tell Yeah. I mean, she likes to wear those large black dresses and dark lipstick because it's her STYLE and I appreciate it - she doesn't care about showing skin and being "attractive".
ohhhh shes so perfect
How many teenagers do you people actually know? She DOES look like a 17 year old and she is NOT abnormally mature for her age. What do you expect a 17 to be like? Do you get all your ideas about people from the television or what YOU were like at that age? You really need to open your minds...Good Lorde...
yes Lorde, hunny.. you are not alone.. i hope you are of light.. you have the music in your essence, you were the beginning of music and shall bring hope to use through the "good" use of its wonders and charms. very old soul indeed, its nice to see you..
How the hell is she boring? Lol she's intriguing as hell. I don't remember the last time I enjoyed an interview as much.
People can be so mean.
As people get older, hopefully they humble out, usually they do.
So freaking pissed they removed that performance of Buzzcut Season.
She is amazing I know every word to all her songs from love club to pure heroine her life is so amazing can't wait for next album!!!
I thought this was a very good interview. Regarding the remark about “simplicity”, I took it to be a compliment to her and so did she. Complexity or simplicity in music are not guarantees of quality. It is only when they are done well that they result in a great song, which is rare.
She is scorpio moon virgo like me hahaha and its so same omg
Her reading tastes are immaculate.
She has weird hand gestures, but she doesn't care, why should anyone else? :) This is all new to her & she's so different. She'll go far. If she was actually on drugs I doubt she'd name her album 'pure heroin'... Plus that has a double meaning. Whatever. She's only 17, a lot of people try many different things. She seems like she wants to be a good role model. Good for her!
2 album! YAY! IM VERRY EXCITED! They will be great!!
great interview! She's very down to earth and I'm excited to see how she grows as an artist.
Brilliant interview Jian. Lorde is one of the most talented young artists to come around in a long, long time.
I love Lorde... Her music helps me a lot...
Really great interview.
nigga how smart is this girl
WHAT THE FUCK
this is my favorite interview in a while
Reminds me a bit of how St. Vincent talks but she's so much older
Age doesn't necessarily mean anything but wow
and the proof is in this interview
So articulate, she is an amazing inspiration for my own personal poetry.
The New Zealand accent is so cool.
6:50 he says: but you don´t seem like a normal 16 years old and her reactions made me remember my adolescence
she the best love her songs so much
She's awesome! ♥
I love this girl very much
Great interview
Wait...this interview was last year when she played her first gig here in Toronto...why was this video uploaded so late? Anyway, she's so down to earth, smart, genuine and beautiful.
The interview footage took a detour before winding up in our laps again. Glad the effort to get it posted didn't go to waste. Cheers!
Q with Jian Ghomeshi Thanks for answering my question. Is she gonna be stopping by the studio in March when she hits TO,again?
Here's hoping! Her and her team were great to have in the studio.
Always
omg, i'm in love with her.
How is she so grown up?! She's extraordinary! I'd love to meet her along with millions of others of course but I can say I really do love her album and as far as Duffy goes I love the song Rockferry
My favourite interviewer on the internet. Love it
bb has grown up so much since this
wow mature beyond her years and smart an dthe interviewer is first class.
shes such a teen in this interview lmao
ASMR here
A Canuck and a Kiwi, Toronto and Auckland are great cities, Canada and New Zealand are great countries, Lorde is great and she even mentions Drake too wonderful
Thank´s the RollingStoneMusic electric magacing I heart about Lorde tour and came across this lines
a legend in the make.
She so brilliant and knows whats's what!!!
I like her. She's genuine and real
Wise beyond here years. Good for her
What a honest interview from both sides.
Poor girl she did not have a answer for every question,
But i still love her!!!
i love her voice this is like my asmr🤤😄
Soo impressive - so great to be a Kiwi - dream on
i'm in love with her....... even more!
who is the artist she mentions with Magical Cloudz?
Cool interview:)
what are her literary influences?
Lovely girl :)
3 years later, still no album :(
Well she's also a geologist with 2 kids sooo she's got alot of shit on her plate rn
+Blueberryking idc
which books did she mention??
Ik vind haar fantastisch, mooi, begaafd en misterieus ♥
I'd actually really like to know what people see when they look at her that makes them think she looks like she's in her 30's? Personally i think she looks her age...
Jian had a chain waiting for her at the end of the interview.
It's so weird to watch him now eh? In retrospect he's got such a rapey vibe.
I would really love to see her short fictions.
It’s been eight years but I agree
He pa not terrified, hes just respectful and nice, wants to learn about them rather than vindicate
she makes me think of christina aguilera.
related to britney spears
related to justin timberlake
related to a tree of our media
It's both intriguing and scary that she's smarter than most of my parents' friends.
Lol
You can tell she's a kid cos it's like pulling teeth trying to hold a real conversation with her.
He asks her a question and she gives him a finite yes/no answer and it's not helping the poor guy with his interview. I'm from Australia... it's not that hard..
lukewarm711 Noob.
Well, she is relatively new to the celebrity world, and she is still young. I'm not sure if it's dependant on what country you're from, but rather how young you are. So, it's probably a case of getting used to interviews, and learning how to respond to each question.
Lorde LMA_Lorde
nemA You got hands
And cool dance moves
Oh JG. I feel so sorry for your fall. You have had such a remarkable career. I just wished these dark secret allegations and charges never happened.
May God (Almighty) have mercy on your soul.
Taha Ahmed He's a sociopath. His victims are the ones who deserve sympathy.
can you name to me some authors she loves and reads?
If only she knew her butt would be on the cover of her third album 💜
Mysteries and Miseries of Music Industry!!! U never know!!! These teenage millennials are pleasantly too good to be true!!! I’m turning my GreenLight On!!
I think she looks between 27 and 30 years old, but if someone told me she was 40 I would believe it.. way more than if someone said she was 17. Interesting.
oh bummer we didn't see the song...
Is that Randy Marsh?
12:30ish "right on!" xD
It's funny because lorde and Adele are my favorite singers!
It's kinda funny how she didn't want her face to be on her album cover...but her first 2 big music videos... Royals, and Tennis Court... are literally just shooting her straight on to her face looking into the camera.
Listening to her speak reminds me a lot of listening to Robert Plant speak.
She should smile more often :)
