      If there were no beater motorcycles. I would have never gotten on two wheel. My first bike, bought right at the beginning of the lockdowns. Is a 2000 sportster 1200 I bought for 2200 bucks. Yea, she’s a little clapped out, crusty, and temperamental. But she is MINE and she started my journey, and I ride the piss out of her. I’m firmly in the beater bike fan club.

    As for bikes being a part of history, best way to forward the history of said bikes isn't through a glass cabinet. I always love seeing classics and sparking conversations about them. Seeing these special bikes ridden is a thing of beauty, and something to remember them by

      A lot of us are busy people and find it hard to get out on the bikes. And car drivers are just getting worse as the years go on.

      Until its destroyed and run over by a semi.If you have an original rare machine with extremely low miles....After 40 years all of a sudden you are going to drive it and rack up the mileage?...There will always be certain low mileage examples that should probably stay that way after many many years of meticulous storage to keep the bike pristine and unridden.

    Like seriously? That guy still rides motorcycles from the 1920s or earlier.
    And he collects and also rides museum pieces.
    I am all over the place with this, I think preservation is not in direct conflict with riding it with certain mindset or moderation.

    Life is too short for storing/collecting things! I like to enjoy them and love Ari’s point of view. I think you all had the same approach. Awesome topic.

    As someone who has been told a few times that some of my bikes like my 1954 DKW or my 1965 Triumph shouldn't be ridden, but I always say that I'm using this bike for what it was meant to do. Now I don't daily my vintage bikes but they get ridden to shows or local group rides. I especially enjoy when my friends and I do an all vintage bike group ride. Thanks for the great episode!

    Regarding ride vs save. A few months ago I was ELATED to finally get my dream bike. a 2019 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. In the 4 months that I have owned it, I've put on over 4000 miles. I HAVE considered "saving" it, to make it last longer but then realized, where's the fun in that? I personally cannot wait to add another 100k+ (it is a Honda, after all).

      I got my bike, a V-Strom 650. The previous owner did ride it, but he put "just" 33,000 miles on it over 6 years, or about 5,500 miles a year.
      I ride 5,500 miles...every month and a half.
      I bought the bike because I want to ride it and ride it I do.

    I like riding and preserving at the same time. I have a 1986 Honda CT110 (final version of CT90) - bought in Maine brand new for $690. One recently sold on bring a trailer for $9,100, unused. Mine is just as nice as that one but I've enjoyed thousands of miles on it. I enjoy maintaining it as much as riding it and I would argue it's in better condition than one that just sat for 40 years. 🌄It deserves to be out on the road and in the wild - people love seeing it and get really nostalgic, which is worth more than money.

    The fact that people who don’t ride, are listening to the podcast, or watching on UA-cam, as their source of knowledge on motorcycling is truly frightening 😱!

    This reminds me of a few KLR listings, that I saw recently, that called them dual sports.
    In my mind, they're adv's, not dual sports. Although, they're definitely the closest to my idea of a dual sport from the adv segment, like how the Husqvarna 701 Enduro is the closest dual sport to being an adv.
    To me, a dual sport is a street legal dirt bike. Most adv's are a naked bike, usually, with a larger front tire diameter and a taller suspension. Weight is also a factory. With dual sports weighing closer to an enduro or trail bike and adv's usually weighing closer to, if not more than, a naked bike.
    Gearing is also important. Dual sports are lower geared from factory, and adv's are higher geared from factory.

      What is a kawasaki klx250 ? I assume its a duel sport. The gearing is fairly high though as is the crf250L

    I love this topic because it transcends motorcycles. I have to agree with you guys. To me, the worst thing you can do with something useful is not use it. A toy preserved in its box has no value, because it has never been played with. The value is in its utility. I would assume that the memories we have playing with our toys as children outweigh the memories we have of our toys sitting on a shelf. The same goes for a motorcycle. The memories I have riding a motorcycle are better than my memories of my motorcycle sitting in the garage.

      I have dents and scratches on my bike and car, before I would have got them fixed up but each one is a memory now. As long as the function is In no way affected. If it would cause rust ot a sharp edge that would be something to resolve.

    As an “cheap old bike” lover, I took a lot of interest in this one. Per the discussion at 45:00-ish, I sold one of my favourite bikes, that I’d previously restored, because I was using it as my daily and was too worried about it getting worn out. My current cruiser, (40 years old) is purposely kept a bit “ratty” so I enjoy riding it more. I’ve taken it off-road, beaten on it, enjoyed it… every couple of years I just strip it down and rebuild it.

    Just listening at the podcast . I’ve got a 2021 SDR with lots of power parts and definitely use it on track. I even used a previous 1 year old SDR 2 for 1 day off-road day 😊
    And to go your way in the past I had a 911 convertible. When friends were coming over and wanted to take our Volvo v70 four our tour we were always pushing them to use the 911.

    I have a garage full of bikes that came to me as beater (or beaten) bikes, that have been saved through either restoration or reformation. As a result I have bikes that I truly enjoy through my sweet equity. Anyone can write a check, but a lifetime of developed skills allows me to save and/or create excellent motorcycles. Classic/Unique/Rare motorcycles (cars, airplanes, boats, whatever) are just machines....and they were designed and built to be enjoyed.

    I recently bought a bike with the intention of it being for my friend to ride since his wife wouldnt allow him to get one.. So I picked up a 74 Honda ST90 (he had a Trail 70 when he was a kid.. close enough) - I brought it to his house and left it there as there was no room in my garage 😉 Now she has warmed up to him riding a small motorcycle so we’ve gone to Barber Vintage Festival and the Small Bore event together. 🍻

    Here's my unsolicited trio of bikes for Ride, Preserve, Burn: The "end of the line" edition - 1983 Triumph TSS 8-Valve (last Meriden Triumph), 1979 Yamaha RD400F Daytona Special (the last air-cooled, 2-stroke street bike sold in the U.S.), 1997 BMW R80GS Basic (the last BMW airhead)

    I had a Norton Model 88 that was a beater bike. Quite an attention getter too. As in it always required a lot of my attention. I loved it though. One of the funest bikes I had was a 1974 CB 750 that I bought as a $200.00 running parts bike. It sat there waiting to be salvaged through the riding season of 1997 but, when Winter came and it was still just sitting there, I was "Hey, I can resurrect that. I can save it!" A true beater it was too. Dented tank, no front fender, shocks that were shocks in name only, flat black was perfect for it. Next season I came upon a motorcycle accident and when a late arriving State Patrol showed up they thought my bike had been involved in the crash. It was also quite a sleeper capable of 120mph, just a running assemblage of flat black spray painted parts that never ever broke down no matter how hard it was pounded. We rode it from WA to MT and OR. Never missed a beat. Sold it to a guy whose BMW had taken a shit and was looking for a "beater'' to ride while the BWM was in for warranty work. Miss that Ol' Beater... If it has two wheels then it's meant to be ridden museum piece or not.

    if you want a flower pot, buy a flower pot. Motorcycles are meant to be ridden. Their "art" is in their motion...at least a major part of it.

    I bought a KTM 790 Duke earlier this year. The reason I bought it cause it was fun to ride not because I wanted it sitting in my garage. If you watch The Goodwood festival of speed in UK they race all the old bikes and it's fantastic to watch. Keep up the great work guys .

    Nice topic. Made me feel better about saving my money on my bikes’ aesthetic damage to focus on the mechanical maintenance (and rider trainings). I feel there is too much focus on the aesthetics at the local motorcycle culture. Its to the point when purchasing 2nd hand, you can get the exact prices and receipts of mods but ask them when the last oil change was done (or if chain maintenance has been done) and you mostly get blank looks.

      @@djsi38t labor is cheap where I live so the “working in their own bike” = mods is not always true here. People might pay a lot of money and will know the little details of the mods they have installed but its not always equivalent to knowing the maintenance requirements of bikes. Hence a lot of people here treat bikes with more than 20’000km high mileage when in fact its just breaking in. I would like to buy a 2nd hand “high mileage” bike but the sellers often offset the price with a large amount of mods I have no interest in.
      I actually just got lucky that a relative knows someone who bought a 2016 Versys 650, then upgraded again to a z900 with still minimal mods on the Versys (just a top box, basic crash bar, and aftermarket exhaust) with less than 5000km on the odometer after 4 years. Now has 25000+km after 2 years and 10 months with me. Could have been more but life responsibilities..

I think another possibile new motorcycle choice for the listener who does not want a lot of buttons and technology could be the Kawi KLR650. (Reference the latest Daily Rider review.)     As a hint for a bike with very little buttons: The z900rs comes to mind...
    I think this is often true: The retro bikes are a bit more simple, maybe with the exception of the r nine t.

    A dad's friend of mine has a HUUUUGE collection of trail bikes that he buys, restores, rides for a bit and stores them. He usually pulls them out when they need bikes for a feature article or similar, but that "museum" is amazingly beautiful and sad at the same time. They are in the best condition ever, but they should be ridden more often hahaha... Honestly, I believe that bikes should be ridden until they have created enough memories. After that, it can sit on a living room, as long as the people seeing it can appreciate the memories and the history that it was involved in. If they don't know / remember, it should be creating more memories =P

    I just bought an '89 CBR400RR that has already been ridden half to death. I fully intend on finishing the job... once I can get it fit to be ridden.

    I always buy the well maintained, cosmetically challenged bikes. Partially I don't have to worry about getting that first scratch or whatever but mostly because I park outside 8 months a year...and the one I choose to be my fair weather winter rider gets almosta full 12 months.
    I won't buy a bike I would be unwilling to ride, hard, anywhere the whim takes me.

    The engine sound game is definitely easier with aftermarket exhaust. Stock exhausts all sound quite similar.

    Beating the "real dual sport" horse a little with my take - after spending a fair bit of time in Africa and Asia, I think the US market has a bias towards bikes meant for sporting trail riding when we think of "dual sports". However, in places I've been ranging from rural Japan, Thailand, South Africa, or Tanzania, the capability of dual-sport motorcycles tends to be more about the ability to simply get transport to places with unimproved roads. I think in the US we tend to think of that basic transit functionality as being a role for ADV bikes, insofar as most of us have to think about unimproved roads in our daily lives in the first place - this is part of why I ended up selling my beloved CRF250L Rally, I would really have to go looking for a gravel road or dirt dual-track anywhere near me, let alone trails

    About the buttons on Bigger bikes … Spurgeon I’m a little bit disappointed that you did not mention the KTM 890 Adventure-R Rally as the simple no button bike, but probably forced by Zack tho saw Yamaha Tenere 700 (😂). Because the if the Dealer sets it up for you in Rally mode (slipmode 5). You never have to touch, more buttons as on the Yamaha T7 (except ABS on or off), In that mode the KTM 890 ADV-R (RALLY) does it all (and more than the T7), and you never change it.

    Harley had a few Italian made dual sport bikes in the 60s and 70s. The 250 and 350 were popular. The also had a 100 and 125 that were heavy as dual sports of the day compared but weren't bad. Price wise they couldn't compete with the Japanese bikes though. Dealers didn't treat service work on them with much enthusiasm either.

    Spurg doesn't like the Superhawk...shame :( I've owned two, just wish they would have gone to EFI and kept it going. It surely would outsell the Ducati Supersport today..price would probably be 12K ish? Man I loved those bikes. That 996 V Twin had a great thump with cans on it. It just needed some front fork updates for sure.

    I don't think smaller imported bikes that were sold in large numbers will begin to gain collector interest for many more years to come. The problem with imported bikes of age as a beater bike is dealers and often manufacturers don't support parts or repair for them. You'd better be prepared to search on line for parts and invest in the tools to do your own repairs. Think about buying junk bikes for parts too. I sold a 94 Honda Magna to a family member 6 years ago who cannot get what should be common parts for it. All the dealer says is buy a new bike. Kawasaki did that to me with a 5 year old dirt bike back in the 70s. The parts for it were unobtanium.

      Honda discontinued parts for the XR models some years ago. I ordered an exhaust for a 1982 Honda xl250r was £36.32 at the time after almost 2 years they said they couldn't get one.

    Another great show!
    Beater bikes are awesome! A beater bike depends on the individual and their station in life. What's one person's beater bike may be another person's prized possession.
    As far as "Should a Black Lightning be ridden hard and put away wet?"
    Some motorcycles have "earned the right" to be treated respectfully, so yes to riding it and no don't put it away wet. A motorcycle may "earn" this by being of a certain vintage, being rare and unique in the history of motorcycling, or having provenance by virtue of its ownership or use (racing). Some motorcycles have "earned" this only in the eyes of their owner. Like Spurg's T100. By virtue of its longevity and sentimental value, it has "earned the right" to not be flogged like a dirt bike in the Pine Barrens!!!

    One of my favorite parts of adv riding is cleaning the bike after the ride. The bike will last longer if you keep it clean. I love seeing how clean my bike can get after some abuse.

    My 67 Ducati was a bike I owned as a teenager, it's still in my possession and it was a ratty sand bike when I bought it back in 1973 it's still rattier than it was back in '73 but it runs. and unfortunately the cost of doing a resto on this bike is clearly above my means so I keep it going as how I remember it, well except for the conversion to 12 volts and Led lighting/ turn signals and other safety consideration s.

    With the title, I expected this episode to go more or less in the opposite direction, i.e. Does it makes sense to have a bike you do no / as little as possible maintenance on, maybe beside your "good" bike for track days or adv fests.
    What you delivered was arguably still interesting, but I'd love you to also cover the opposite which is, of course, a whole other podcast ;)

    I wish the topic of a bike found in its original crate was brought up in this conversation. I think it would have forced an answer to the original question. I feel like Ari, that bike was made to ride but everyone views it as special because it's never been taken out of the box.

    wow i heard Henning but thought, no, cannot be related to Todd until i saw the pics of Todds plate and CB450. i knew Todd a bit, and I lived on the Cape and raced at Louden. “i think i can”

    Spurgeon, It's great that you keep recommending the little KLX dual-sport, BUT there is no KLX230L. The models are KLX230, KLX230S, KLX230SE, and KLX230R. No 'L'.

    Carroll Shelby said that it was a shame to collect an AC Cobra, they were meant to be driven. That being said VIN CSX 2000 sold for $13.75 million, maybe it should be driven sparingly.

    Every manufacturer should keep several copies of bikes for heritage. It's a shame in Europe we have lost so many bike manufacturers, and their bikes. And some of them where incredible or game changing in their own way. But they are gone.

    Had a real beater. 1980 Suzuki GS 750. Thrashed and trashed the hell out of it, played with the cops a few times and she kept up 👍🏽

    The "ride, preserve, burn" game is a great idea for the podcast. You guys have to bring it back from time to time, even if its impromptu while reading the news or something. I have a suggestion that should probably be considered though; the bike u choose to preserve should be eligible for being ridden from time to time, right? Its the "wife" bike of the 3 choices, and all 3 of you were pretty unanimous about respectfully riding the preserved collector bikes. If u cant blow the cobwebs out of her pipes a few times a year, u trade her in for a new model! Know what im sayin? ;)

    Hey Zack and Spurg, First, this was a really fun episode. The "Kiss, Marry or Burn" game was a blast and I know will be played again when the time is right. Secondly, to point out a slight... I mean slight error: when you advised Christopher regarding his request for a "simple" and current model bike with few or none (encumbering) bells and whistles, you made a glaring omission. Hints: it has a kill switch, a bright beam switch, a speedo and ABS. That's it. Can you guess which 650cc, green, "torque-enough" thumper machine it is? Christopher might like it! ;-)

    I don't think i'll ever have the nerve to get on a MotoGP bike. The combination of cost and crazy power would make me so nervous every time I'd twist the throttle.

    Save all Bikes. it might be trash to you - I remember a certain someone who saved a 72 CB 500 For 300 bucks and got it running. I took it to Hollister and back from Concord back in the early 90s. If you don’t want to bike save it for someone else Will want it

    Wow great show, I had so many laughs 😂. And I agree wit Ari’s view on restoring and preserving a bike I have a Kawasaki Z1000-A1, and also owned a Z900-B1 (I never should have sold that one) but as You maybe know there especially that bike is massively restored to the original shape. I never did that, and every time I’m looking to all the scratches and scarves it remember me to the action that caused it and brings me back to those times. I think it gives the bike it’s own character. And I made my own striping hahaha not original but my own taste. And according to the Save/ride/burn game, My first bike (bigger than 50cc) was a Yamaha 125cc from the 70th, I still own the Kawa Z1000-a1 from 77, and also own a KTM 890 Adventure-R. …. So back to the game, I would BURN the Yamaha 125, SAVE THE Kawasaki Z1000-A1, and RIDE (forever) the KTM 890 Adventure-R. That is a tough one for me, to not riding the Kawasaki Z1000-A1 anymore because that bike is still running like a dream.

      1974 Z1 was my 2nd bike. I paid $400 for it. Sold it for 2k 4 years later. I polished the valve covers and put a 4 to 1 exhaust. What a great machine.

    Hey y’all I’m a huge fan of the show I’m 20 and have been trying to fix a 1999 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 it’s my first bike and I’m pretty sure I’m in over my head even with the shop manual for my model but Ik taking it to a shop would be the same as putting down a fat down payment on a new bike, should I put the money towards fixing the bike I have or put it towards a new bike? Any advice would be appreciated! Love the show guys 👍

      What does the bike need to run? If it's new fluids and plugs do the work. If the motor is locked up I'd get a new bike.
      Are you a cruiser fan or are you open to other bikes?

      @@westondifranco9313 so I replaced the plugs, oil, cleaned the carb but I’m 90% sure the carb float needs to be replaced so I’d have to take that out again and for safe measure I’d probably just replace the pilot and secondary screws since I just cleaned them the last time I took it apart but aside from that once I get it running it needs new signals cuz the old ones rusted off I need a new exhaust system because the old Cat is rusted out and of course new brake cables, clutch cables, tires, sprockets, chain, and the forks probably need to be adjusted before it’s safe to take out on the road. It’s doable but just not right now and I want to get out and ride so I’m thinking of getting an old school bike like the new Royal enfield continental or interceptor 650 cuz I’m a beginner but if I were to be a little irresponsible I really love the look of the Indian ftr 1200 that bike is just beautiful

      @@p-funk5562 If you like a sort of naked sport bike I'd look at an FZ6. You can find one for 2-4 grand. And it's significantly faster than any royal Enfield.
      Carb issues and problems can be hard to get figured out.
      Fuel injected Japanese bikes just work.

      @@westondifranco9313 Does it run then stop? I had the same issues with the CB 500. Didn’t buy a new gasket just used gasket maker on top of the gaskets on the intake of the engine where the carburetor and engine meet and that’s what it did it for me

    There's some clapped out bikes 🏍 on Craigslist, and with those ride them. There's a guy up here in Colorado that has a 40s Indian motorcycle and it's sweet it has that barn find look. The yamaha r7 and older bikes are what this guy should buy.

    NO! NO CHANGE! CHANGE IS EVIL! WE FEAR CHANGE! lol! I think it would be interesting to see the data on the difference between how bikes are built/classified and then primarily used. The 1250 GS is a great example, built as an ADV but, presumably, most are used strictly on road. Hey, I love Scotch and there are bottles I have purchased for drinking and bottles I have purchased for collecting. Guess its ok as its way less than 4% of my portfolio lol! Right after I got my motorcycle license I had two of my customers offer to let me ride their bikes and I said "thank you, no." I absolutely did not want that responsibility, firm believer in ride your bike. Wow, I have a CD I got in high school called "The Copulation Compilation" haven't heard that word since lol. R1 gets saved, Indian gets ridden, and the Honda gets torched! Ride the GS, Save the R1M, Burn the V4. Ride the Honda, Preserve the GSXR, and torch the Kawi. Preserve the Vespa, Ride the Ducati, and torch my first bike which was a 1972 CB450. (it was a project bike that never got projected) I'm thinking Triumph Speed Triple. Once again got the manufacturer, but not the bike. Sure are Chris, go buy a Royal Enfield!

    I'm curious. There was a case where a dude had himself embalmed riding his beloved Harley. He had it put on a trailer and dragged so he could ride with his buddies to the cemetery, and was buried with the bike. Do you think this is a good use of a motorcycle? I no one else is ever going to enjoy it, but, honestly if we talk about motorcycles having souls and opinions a Harley seems like it'd enjoy going out with its rider. Do you think a super moto would enjoy being buried with its rider if they were to be posed doing a wheelie?

    I know it has been a year since this podcast has been published, my honest opinion on this matter is that the machines were meant to be used. Originality is better even if it carries the scars of the said use. Like life the scars are the story.

    I got a put in my two cents. I won an FTR from Yammie noob don’t get me wrong I love to ride it, I know there’s gonna be a day when I drop it. I’m just kind of cringing on the fact that it will happen. Right now I’m having fun on a salvage Kawasaki Z 400 which is perfect for riding around town, which is what most of us do with motorcycles anyway

    Ride the R1, Burn honda dirtbike, and preserve the scout.

    Machines like to be used. Not using them, ruins them. But if you have a machine perceived as rare and valuable, be prepared for perfect strangers to harangue you on what your responsibility is and what you should do. That was my experience with cars - I wonder of anyone in the general public even recognizes a collectable MC.

    On the topic of collectibles, a 57 Les Paul played by Jimmy Page will likely always go up in value, no matter how much you play or abuse it. My advice, buy a motorcycle ridden by Steve McQueen, James Dean or Dennis Hopper in some movie and never worry about it's future value.
