I think you should trust your creativity and keep making designs that follow your interests and excite you. You are such a wonderfully creative designer and I get excited by all of your designs! I think you have the potential to go really far in this industry BECAUSE you create designs that are quirky and bold and authentically YOU. Throughout history many of the greatest designers started out doing things that were "unconventional" or "out there" and quickly became huge inspirations for the designers that followed!

It IS the ‘right’ thing to do. Writers are advised to write about what they know. As a designer, it makes sense to be inspired by what you know and then explore what you don’t know about what you know.

As a mature age student who is striking out on a new career path to explore your love of textiles and creativity you would be doing a disservice to yourself NOT indulging in your passions. Just go with the flow and enjoy yourself. We have faith in you.

I'm so glad you came to a happy place with your ocean plan, even if others also did in the end! I know it seems like you choose the ocean a lot, but it doesn't look like it from the outside--I'm thinking of your beautiful, glamorous bug project, the knotwork on your dishware. From my perspective, I see a love of color, a strong interest in natural forms and organic structures, and a bit of playfulness. As long as it doesn't feel like a rut, keep on doing what feels natural--it's your personal style that you're developing. And thank you for taking us along even though these were mad busy weeks!

I really appreciate you saying this - thank you SO much. It's hard for me to look at everything I'm doing from the outside, even while editing these videos 😅 so it's really helpful to hear a more objective perspective! I worry that I just keep gravitating toward similar themes and should try to diversify a bit, but animals/nature are truly what makes me the happiest. I've just gotta battle that internal critic 🥲 Thank you again for your kind reassurance and for your support, it means a lot to me ❤️❤️❤️

I went to FIT from 1987-1992, textile design then fashion marketing, unfortunately I followed another path in life, and just recently started knitting and enjoying it so much!! Nothing in life should be regretted but I do wish I had stayed true to my passions!! So follow all your dreams and passions!!! always!!!

Coming back to this vid cuz I def missed it the first time around but SCREAMINGGG at your ideas for these projects..! I like what you decided about keeping with certain themes for your work - you don’t have to put up extra rules for yourself to still be pushed and challenged and educated through your classes :~D when inspired GRAB IT and don’t let go !! You have a whole life of inspiration ahead of you! THANKS 4 SHARING !!!!

I'm sure Vivienne Westwood was really "out there" at some point, but look at what she achieved! That's kind of a crazy example, but I really like the unique style you have, but I completely understand trying to find some aspects of it to be marketable for your future. So very glad to see your vlog today. I had no idea you had a background in the sciences and that is SO neat!

I was so happy to see a new FIT blog today! I watched while working on my own (admittedly tedious) spinning assignment.

Omg you worked at the Academy of Sciences?! I LOVE that place! (Also the Monterey Bay Aquarium is literally one of my happy places and I wish I lived closer so I could go regularly.)

Yessssssss I love both places SO much!! I grew up volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on the weekends and actually got my first job there in the education department! It is definitely a major reason I ended up studying marine biology 🥹💕 I hope to go back someday!

Kelp is surprisingly stunning!! I feel like we hardly see it used as a subject in textiles, so I wanted to give it its moment to shine and hopefully I can do it justice 😅❤

Also on your note about continuing to use your fave marine biology as an inspiration. I think it’s great. Don’t forget, you can use it in so many ways, from literal microscopic right through to how it relates to philosophy and non literal interpretations. Do what makes you happy! Plus you already know but they can inspire you to find other things inspired by marine biology. Space and sci fi creatures inspired by marine biology, fictional beings, illustration styles. It’s endless. go for it!
