Making a Cotton Jacket from Scratch 🌸 Weaving + Easy Sewing Tutorial!

- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- This jacket was inspired by a prompt from my online Saori Weaving Study Group, hosted by Saori Worcester. This month’s prompt was to weave in a way that is “bold/wild and quiet/subtle at the same time”, and this challenge really took me out of my comfort zone. I then transformed my cloth into a fun warm-weather statement piece! Stay tuned for next month’s challenge!

Thank you so much for watching this video and supporting my channel - it truly means the world to me 💕
What a helpful cat, I mean sewing assistant!
She's the best 🥰
Wow. Gorgeous garment. But let's all take a moment to acknowledge the dedication to all the film work! Wowza!
Thank you so much, that means so much to me! 😃💕
Super cute, and your helper was also adorable.
very creative!! you have a great design future ahead, so excited for you!
What a gorgeous jacket. You amaze me! I love the colors and the different yarns. Just awesome!
Beautiful boho style jacket. The texture is amazing. I'll have to steal this idea one day. 👍👍👍
nice colors, nice structures. nice shown.
thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. I'm just starting my weaving journey and this is sooo inspiring. Love the jacket on you.
beautiful fabric, fantastic design!
amazing! thank the goddess for such wonderful happy accidents of just enough and pattern matching!
You can weave very fast ! 😁Beautiful stuff 👍🌈
Gorgeous Andrea, in style, yarns and weaving 👏
Fantastic. You are amazing. Andrea.🤓
Obsessed
This garment is stunning. Everything about it is genius. You are a fantastic designer and artist.
Another wonderful and inspiring video.
So glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much!! 🤗
Beautiful!!!!
I love the fact that you are brave enough to cut your woven fabric. I recently bought a loom and I hope to be able to make yardage. Eventually.
That is so exciting!! 😃 I definitely have to work up the courage to make the first cut.. usually I pace the room and stare at the fabric for about an hour and have to hype myself up 🤣It's so worth it though!!
You are addictive!! Another fabulous project.. I love the free form weaving you do. The results are so beautiful and so unique. I have a helper that likes sleeping on the best bits... or trying to catch the yarn as it flies around when I am knitting. Thank you.
Thank you again 😃💕 cats are the best assistants for sure!!
What a not so helpful sewing assistant, er....I mean kitty! Just like my three hooligans.
I love your pattern! You inspire me to try new things!
That makes me so happy!! Making things is so much more fun with kitties 🥰
Lovely!
This is just so beautiful!! Amazing amazing amazing! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 🥹💕
Fabulous thank you for sharing and creative ideas
Beautiful!
Thank you so much!! 😃
I’m obsessed with everything in this video!!! You are my favorite artist!! 😍😍😍
I love you, Jess!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have just discovered SAORI weaving and I am intrigued. I took a two day workshop with Terri Bibby on Saltspring Island (near Victoria, BC) and was totally excited by this form of weaving. I have a floor loom that I haven't used in 20+ years and I am hoping to adapt it to do Saori weaving. I am just about ready to start but have to go thorugh my equipment to see if I have what I need. I have a lot of different fibres mostly wool and acrylic and some unknown. I don't think I have much cotton but will hopefully get some eventually. I want to do a jacket but first I think I will just try some experimental samples. I'd also like to do a few small rag mats but would use cotton for that. Thanks so much for your very informative and inspiring video.
This is so gorgeous! I love the texture and pop of color.
You look so beautiful in your garment. I wish I had half your energy!
Thank you so much 🥹❤️
I'm late to the party and I love allll of this! Beautiful work!!!!!
Thank you SO much!! 🥰
fantastic fabric and gorgeous garment!!
Thank you so much!! 😃💕
I am not necessarily certain if this could be used for this, but I would really love to try to use a loom with fabric and make my own fabric to stretch onto my canvases. I love making my own canvases and honestly, if I could, would love to try doing something like this and see how it goes.
It turned out wonderful! Thanks for sharing all of your projects!
Thank you so much!! 😃💕
I love , love , love this jacket🥰
Thank you SO much!! 🥰🥰🥰
I love your jacket and your video! The jacket turned out so beautiful and your enthusiasm and energy is a breath of fresh air. Happy Weaving!
Thank you so much, that means so much to me!! 🥰

Love your video. It was entertaining and informative. Great job! Oh ... and your jacket is awesome, too.
Thanks so much!! 🥰🥰🥰
Wow. I love what you made out of this unique weaving ! Awesome.
Thank you so much! 😃❤️
I just love your weaving instructions and final fabric. Your video is absolutely fantastic, as is your jacket. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, you are so kind!! 🤗
Wow! What a stunning project! So inspiring. I'm going to have to try something like this out. The jacket looks wonderful on you as well!!!
Thank you so much!! Definitely give it a try, it's a whole lot of fun 😃💕
this is SOO cool. You inspire me !
Thank you so much!!! 🥹💕
I'm a new Saori weaver, with no stores, classes or guru's near me. I've been struggling to learn, then I found your vids ! Thank you, I'm learning a lot ! My only suggestion is to put the word "Saori" into your vid titles to make it easier for people like me to find them. I know that Saori has a proprietary interest in its name, but any attorney can tell you that using the word descriptively for "educational" non-commercial purposes is known as "fair use" and is not a violation of copyright.
That is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing, especially since I am a terrible designer and would like to make this for myself.
(Love that kitty!! I'll gladly take her off your hands. 😻😻😻)
So brilliant
Thank you!! 😃💕
Another fantastic weaving/sewing outcome!! Thank you so much for sharing your process. I learn so much from your videos
That means so much to me, thank you!!! 🥰
Me too!
What a beautiful jacket. Love it. I wish I could make one for myself. 🪄 🎀
I'm spinning 3 lbs of organic cotton stuffing. surprisingly, it spins up well for me. I aim for a finished yarn like the kind youre using here!!! I'm having fun. i want to make cotton clothes! Heck, maybe a bath robe. thanks for motivating me. really, I'm stubborn and lazy...
Oooh, that’s so exciting!! I’d love to see what you make 😃💕
@@AndreaAlexander so i'm spinning on a homemade wheel using an old bike and random craft toy parts... this cotton 'stuffing' i bought as a cheapskate feels weak to me, i don't trust it. i might have to invest in actual commercially prepared sliver or roving... or i just want the plants in my backyard!!!
I was inspired, and have just finished my own jacket! So happy, thank you. 😁
That makes me so happy, congrats!!! 😃💕
This is a fabulous project and you have inspired me!
Thank you so much! That makes me so happy 🥰
This is truly an amazing piece of wearable art!
I love your jacket and your other projects! So beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I have about 4 pieces of woven fabric that I have been wanting to sew into clothing. This video, along with your others, is giving me the mojo and confidence that I need to get started! Thanks again. Love your work!
Thank you so much for your comment, you absolutely made my day! I hope you have a wonderful time sewing with your fabrics - there is really nothing more satisfying than wearing your own handwovens 🤗💕 Enjoy!!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and process. I really enjoyed the video, and am so glad you’re in the study group!
Thank you so much for watching! 🥰 I'm so looking forward to our next meeting!! I spent so long working on this video I completely lost track of time, so I only just finished making my next warp today 😅Wish me luck hahaha
You did a fabulous job! I love everything about this
Thank you so much!! 😃💕
great work! love the fringe, and i love the serendipitous pattern matching and width!
Thank you so much!! 😄💕
wow great Jacket! how many yards do you put on your loom for projects like this?
For this project, my warp was 6 meters long, but because I messed up during warping/left super long fringe on both sides/it shrunk a bit after wet finishing, the final fabric was only 4.5 meters long 😅
Words cannot express how happy this video makes me feel! I a! about to order my first loom, branching out from knitting and crochet. This coat is so beautiful!! I subscribed. Thank you for sharing 😍😍
You made my day!! Thank you so much for your kindness 🥰 I hope you have an amazing time with your first loom, that is SO exciting!!
@@AndreaAlexander 🥰 you’re so welcome! I also a aw your other rainbow jacket and thought what a beautiful thing to dance along that piece of cloth! I will share my
Weaving experience on my channel and definitely will share your videos 💗💗💗
@@CozyBooks_Lattes I can't wait to see your videos! I just subscribed 😃
I love the Japanese dolphin technique! What is the official name? I didn't catch it. Thanks!
I actually don't know its formal name! Kenzo Jo (the founder of Saori weaving) called it either "dolphins" or "jumping dolphins" so I've just been calling it that 😅
My 20th birthday is tomorrow’ and my goal in my 20s will be to learn how to use a loom to make fabrics and carpets.
That is such a wonderful goal!! Good luck 🥰🥰🥰 If you’re looking for a place to learn, definitely see if there is a SAORI studio in your area!
Amazing piece of garment. I would wear as it is ar even to make it a loose blouse. Congrats girl. I have 1 question for you? If i want to make a sweater lets say with a big cardboard sheet you know the school way 😄 how i do it in both sides of the cardboard so its larger etc? Thank you very much Nicholas from Cyprus 🇨🇾 🇨🇾🇨🇾🇨🇾🇨🇾🇨🇾🇨🇾🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻✅✅🌸🌺🦋
Wow so beautiful what an amazing job and thank you for this video I love it! Can you tell me what dent reed you are weaving in?
Thank you so much 🥰 my reed is 5 dents per centimeter!
awesome jacket
Thank you!! 😃
so gorgeous! well done! beautifully made! what kind of stitch did you use to sew them together?
Thank you so much!! I just used a regular straight stitch on my sewing machine.
@@AndreaAlexander thanks! I will give it a try soon! 🤩
Did I ever mention that I finished building a 36" 2 shaft counterbalance (soon to be 4+ shaft rising shed) loom? I wove a 20/2 cotton Dune style 3 yard scarf. I haven't dared to warp more because I'm not using anything but crafting tools. This project is all I've been thinking about lately...
Hello Andrea, I was wondering what dent reed you use. Is it the reed that came with the loom? That is 5 per centimeter or 12.5 dpi. Thanks
Yes, I used a 5 dent per centimeter reed! :)
@@AndreaAlexander thankyou!
I've been trying to google more information about galabo yarn or the gala yarn spinner for like an hour now and it's damn near impossible. Could you please talk about this topic more?
I originally bought my yarn from Loop of the Loom and upon searching for it again, I realized they changed the spelling from "galabo" to "garabo" (i think it might have to do with English vs. Japanese pronunciations) and they are currently only selling the yarn in brown: loopoftheloom.com/yarn-shop/masuhisa-3172-organic-natural-brown-cotton Unfortunately, this is all the information I have!
@@AndreaAlexander Thanks! I appreciate you immensely
I wish someone would weave more fabric to make clothing with and make videos, I want to weave a jacket in the style of a denim trucker jacket except using my own woven material, but I can’t find anything even close as far as videos go, it’s all women’s clothing and nothing for men.
Saori patterns in general are unisex, and this jacket in particular can definitely be worn by either men or women. I think it's all about the styling!
