It takes great skill to know the measure of air pressure and volume to create sound on a conch shell like this. A very abstract object to make music from. You must transcend a certain level of skill with trombone playing to do this... respects Steve Turre

What does this have to do with the trombone? This man is a conch player first and foremost, trombone is just his side gig.

Oh man, I must have listened to the United Nations CD a million times over the years, but actually seeing someone play two conch shells at the same time is...is... I don't even know what to say!
I was at the gig in Barcelona on the same tour, around 1989-90. Still rates as one of the best jazz gigs I've ever seen.
We made music in the past with natural Instruments. These days people get surprised by this when in the past it was normal.

Soy de ibiza, una isla del Mediterráneo donde tocabamos conchas para comunicarnos (viene el pescadero, vienen piratas, esa tia es una puta, se ha muerto mi padre...). Llamamos a la accion de sonar una caracola "brolar" (pronunciado brulá), y se tocan igual que las trompetas.
I'm from Ibiza, a mediterranian island, and we used sea shells to comunicate between us for centuries (the fisherman is here, the pirates are coming, she's a bitch, my father is dead...).
The action of make sound of a sea shell has a name: "brolar", and you have to play them like a trumpet

Dude, I did revolutionize shell playing using both hands. Steve didnt think to use two becuase he plays trombone. Playing over an octave, chromatically is revolutionary, look it up. No one has ever played that many fundamental pitches (no overtones) on a shell till this point in recorded history.

The small shells play even more notes than the one I use. However, I just recently found a baseball sized shell i like, so I havent used it in vids yet.
I wonder how long after the first human blew air thru their mouth to make these sounds louder that it took some jerk to fart thru one
