      That’s the one thing that always bothers me with them is they explore with sneakers on. No even sneakers but skate shoes and I am like come on guys atleast use hiking boots. This is how you accidentally get nails and glass and rusty metal to shoot through your shoes and cut your feet and get a infection probably.

    • @jonnygifford989
      @jonnygifford989 5 років тому +20

      one of the tags there is Klops, who is a really famous (infamous?) graffiti writer. It's arround the 1.20 mark. I'm a graffiti writer and always think abandoned places are the best for graff. Although most people hate tags, without tags you wouldn't have the colourful graffiti pieces and murals you see (which btw i bet you love, and upload to your FB/IG) Not all graffiti has to have some pseudo-political message, like fucking banksy. If you dont get it.... you probably never will.

    Judging by the state of decay, the style of toys, and the wall art left around the place, I'd say the place was abandoned sometime around 1996-1998. The "Friendship Club" banners are what really make me think that, as they weren't all that popular and only stayed in elementary schools for five or six years before they got replaced with the "We Belong Together" posters I'm sure many 2000s kids are familiar with.
    What disturbs me the most is that unlike other mental hospitals that accommodate children, this one was built more like a giant boarding school in the children's wing than a medical facility. A lot of times they trying to make it as simple and sanitary as possible because the focus is to get the kids out of there once they receive their treatment. The turnover rates for beds in most children's psych hospitals is pretty high, as they don't stay there long once they're diagnosed and properly treated. With this it's like they were trying to build a home for the child patients, which suggests these kids were there long-term with no indication of any plans to receive immediate psychiatric treatment. Like it was just an enclosure to house the children that the state was throwing away. I can only imagine what sort of odd behaviours a child growing up in such an environment would develop. It might have made them harder or even impossible to treat, as the coping mechanisms and reasoning developed as they grew up in there would be unique to their circumstances, totally outside the realm of expertise for a child psychologist of the time. Then eventually they'd just be transferred to the adult wards. Sad and terrifying to think about.

    • @Progan666
      @Progan666 6 років тому +50

      probably why they closed. I imagine they wanted to close it much earlier but had trouble transferring the patients it was a giant facility after all.

      with that many large buildings the complex could have easily been a lot more than just a mental asylum. There could have been more traditional long term care facilities as well as other uses and not simply all asylum. There is also the possibility that while it was an asylum at one time it wasn't an asylum when it closed but a different kind of facility but it the name of it being an asylum stuck with the locals.

      A lot of these asylums weren't just for mentally ill people, they also served as a place to put the mentally disabled. If that's the case here, then those children wouldn't have left. They were essentially warehoused in these places for life.

    As a Mom. what struck me about the children area is that high chair for a baby and toys are for toddlers. It makes me wonder if people just gave up their babies with birth defects at the hospital, not even bringing the child home. so sad.

    • @Robin-zx4oo
      @Robin-zx4oo 5 років тому +13

      That isn't how it works.. People probably gave birth to babies in the asylum, but if a mother gave up her child because of birth defects, it would go up for adoption??

    • @abbyreviews3544
      @abbyreviews3544 5 років тому +77

      @@Robin-zx4oo Not back in the day. Kids born with birth defects were seen as outsiders and families often worried that having a child like that would hurt their reputation. Unfortunately nobody wanted to adopt kiddos like that, so they were stuffed away in places like this. It's sad but true

    • @HardDriveGuruOfficial
      @HardDriveGuruOfficial 5 років тому +32

      Nobody wanted to adopt "defective" children back then, and even today children with difficult special needs often have a really hard time in the foster/adoption system. Adoption as a concept is all good and well, but it only works if enough people are willing to open their arms and homes to the children after they're surrendered.

    When was this hospital active? I currently work at a psychiatric hospital for children, and toys like that are not allowed because they could be used as weapons. Curtains are certainly not allowed because they could also be used for self harm or to harm others. This doesn't add up unless this is a very old establishment that had no protocol, but those toys and jackets seem relatively new.

      Really? That's a lot of lead paint to only be closed since 2004. Not to mention the fallout shelter signs. Also that electrical seems much too old to only have been decommissioned a few years ago. Most likely you got the wrong location. The land might have been taken from them as of 2004 but it running up until, unlikely.

    • @TheSplendidWren
      @TheSplendidWren 7 років тому +6

      The building itself was founded in 1908. They never really remove lead paint they just paint over it. Fallout shelters in old buildings remain fallout shelters. My high school was a fallout shelter. My local college is a fallout shelter. St. Agnes (as evidenced by the toy box) closed in 2003. The land has since been repurchased and a few of the buildings re-purposed.
