Venkat is being kind and magnanimous in his interview. Venkat was kept out of the test side on numerous occasions. In fact he played the Madras test after a long gap of nearly 7 years. Against Pakistan in 1978, in Karachi he was named in the playing eleven before being dropped in favor of jimmy Amarnath. He was always termed as ODD MAN OUT and very unlucky to miss the playing eleven losing out to Prasanna.
@rajkumarrajamani4811:True., He had to sit out of the playing eleven on many occasions, despite being in good form., due to the presence of E A S Prasanna.. In fact, Venkat was the Captain in the II Test of the 1974-75 series against W.I., at New Delhi, but was omitted from the Team, for the next Test, and was the 12th Man during the IV test at Madras [now Chennai]., his Home city. He was a good Sportsman, and took everything in its stride, in a sporting gesture.,
This is one of the VERY BEST interviews I have come across. Thank you very much JAI Sir for bringing the😢 Great legendary person to speak about another Legend ❤
Venkat used to be my hero as I was growing up. He used to pass through (Fiat Car) our street for matches in Chepauk. We used to do Archana in Sri Parthasarathy temple and share the Prasad with him. I have seen almost all the matches played in Chepauk. His captaincy is a lesson for all the cricket lovers. His pep talk before the match, his feedback post match, I used to enjoy watching it from a distance. A great cricketer, a victim of politics, though. His umpiring too is good and flawless almost. Salutes to you Venkat.
Being the 60's kid we loved to watch the famous spin quartet in actio. No current spinners can match the skill and art if the famous four. We used to say in our days the fearsome foursome. Thank you all for bringing back the nostalgia.
Happy to listen to S.Venkatarghavan Sir. Happy to see him today I think if my memory goes back he has taken 236 or 237 test wickets. Legendary spinner speaks
I was keenly engrossed in the cricket commentary during 1950s and later on in the Television live. The famous quartet of Indian cricket was the golden age of Indian cricket and ruling without any notable fast bowlers. May his soul RIP
I remember you respected Venkatraghavan, you were my idol in my early teens and I became an off spinner too being in Chennai then Madras.. When you were in Parry company you daily came for lunch at Ambis Cafe in Broadway Chennai, where our cycle shop existed.. Wishing you long healthy life ahead.. Lord Venkateshwara bless you.
Even today, when I see Venkatraghavan, it brings back those wonderful memories when Cricket was Cricket and not a money making Jamboree and colored clothes Circus!! What a bowler! And his fielding! Fielding Quartet Venkat, Wadekar, Abid, Solkar the great!! I wish Venkat health and happiness! The Spin Quartet sent shivers down the spine of the batsmen of the opposition! Chandra, Bedi, Prasanna & Venkat!!! Gentlemen cricketers! Thank you Jai Galagali!
In my opinion, Bishen Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar, and Venkataraghavan were the greatest spinners and the best spin combination that elevated India to a respectable Test team in the 1960s and 70s. Back then, without fast bowlers, it was common for one of them, often Bedi, to start bowling as early as the fourth or fifth over.
Both are the legends of Indian Cricket. It was a good gesture to interview Venky on Bishen. Their dedication towards the game is incomparable and rare to see in the present day.
Thanks Jai for wonderful interaction with the great off-spin bowler of yesteryear S. Venkataraghavan. He is not appreciated enough in Tamil Nadu for obvious reason.
Thank you Mr. Jai for taking us down the memory lane. Absolutely happy to see Venkat. A great spinner and a brilliant fielder who later became the most respected international umpire, making Indians proud.
Very nice. It was great to see Venkat and credit goes to you since generally speaking Venkat doesn’t like publicity. I don’t recall having seen him in any public function.
Those were days of Gentlemen's Game Our Players respected each other with Warmth & Love towards the Game made them to Contribute to the Game & Country with Pride
Great interview. What humility and what grace. Venkat sir was a brilliant bowler and fielder. His reminiscences are worthy enough to be documented as 'cricket history'.
Thank you Mr Galagali The only thing that is almost as interesting as seeing the wonderful archived footage of these greats from yesterday is hearing their reminiscences and insights. Wonderful to hear an old legend passing on his stories regarding his sadly missed "brother" from that magical quartet.
Thanks Jai for a great conversation. Appreciate your efforts in making this happen. Both Bedi and Venkat have been the greatest bowlers representing India. Seeing and listening to Venkat has been a treat. Thanks a lot.
What a great trip down memory lane! Thanks a ton Mr. Galagali! By the way I would probably give a finger or two for that awesome baritone of yours. It could cut through a log of timber...
A straight forward cricketer who have been ill treated by then Delhi and Mumbai lobbies. Lobbies couldn't digest his sucess and playing county. A strict disciplinarian which has become rare in present day cricket.

A nice, short journey down the memory lane. It would have been nice had Venkat's memory been drawn towards his stint for the English county Derbyshire during the seasons 1973-76 (if my remembrance is right) as during the same season Bedi played for Northamptonshire. Among this celebrated spin quartet, both Bedi & Venkat were well known for their economic spells in the ODI Format, Deodhar Trophy, etc. which was just in the fledgling stage in the era of 1970's (1975-79.). In the 1975 Prudential Cup Match against New Zealand, it was the batsmen in late order - Abid Ali, Venkat and Bedi who contributed with their Bat to put some respectable Total for India crossing 225 mark. I remember Venkat taking 4 Catches in the 4th innings of that Chennai Chepauk Test of 1975 against New Zealand mentioned by you in which his partnership with Syed Kirmani retrieved India from a crisis situation to a comfort zone. I well remember to have watched that Test Match in the TV along with my school friends when I was just studying Class VII. In that particular New Zealand Test Series only, Venkat took his 100th Test Wicket in the 1st Test @ Mumbai (his 30th Test). Venkat was a terrific fielder and expected the same stuff from his team mates in Tamilnadu and was a terror to all of them on this count as he's widely known to be. Of course, such an expectation only enhanced the level of their fielding and alertness. He made a mark for himself as one of the well respected umpires @ the international level.
At the end of the county season, when he was back in Madras, I saw him in a match that he came to watch, something he did often during his playing days, and asked him how many wickets he took for Derby, recall him telling me 76 or so. Also remember, when the touring Australians played against Derby, he was the only one crossed 20 run mark in both the innings against the fiery spell of Thompson and Lillie
