Loved the old cattle market When I was young boy I used to stand on the weighing scales.Always wondered way they never measured my weight. My dad always laughed at me
I remember school holidays my grandad coming from Handsworth and going to Worksop. We always stopped of at Davys for a tea cake and coffee. I know the cattle market was there, but I can never remember walking around it.
I watched and waited for you to talk more about the old market up the top there. my dad and grandma were the local legends from way back, the old kids roundabout was my gran and the hotdog stall was my dad all the way up until the start of market moving down the center. Everyone knew Bimbo/hotdog Dave
My old stomping ground. Nice to see it thriving with the market on the high street now. Shame about the closed shops. I remember when Fords closed down and became the Argos, which is now gone too so it seems.
Worksop Victoria Hospital was on the left hand side of the road immediately beyond the traffic lights, 0-37 on video, and when it closed a Tesco was built on the site. The nurses' home was in the row of buildings just before the lights. The white coloured building in the middle of the junction, 1-36, was the main post office, which had a row of red 'phone boxes outside and the white coloured building with 'turrets' at each end, 1-43, was the original Savoy Cinema. Nice bit of driving at 1-58, with the black car approaching the lights in the left-hand lane and then turning right! After the original Co-op was demolished and the site became a car park, 2-21, new premises were later built where the Skills Hub is now, 4-16, and the town's only 'proper' music shop, Berry & Son, was a bit further along in the row on the left, at 4-52. Woollies was on two floors and my future wife worked there as a 'Saturday Girl' in the sixties. That building now occupied by Greggs, 7-19, could only have been a Burton's couldn't it Tim? The toy shop in Ryton Street, just after Shoezone, 7-42, was called The Hobby Shop - I must have kept them in business for a number of years. At 9-26, the flat-topped building on the right hand side of the road was originally the site of the Essoldo Cinema and the Gaiety Cinema, later a bingo hall, was on the left hand side of Bridge Street, at 12-27. The large building at 15-25 was called Copthall House; the two upper levels were occupied by the DHSS, one of the shops to the right of the entrance to The Parade (flats) was a cobbler's and Seven Deadly Sins was a health food shop. More good stuff Tim. Thanks.
Thanks Bob. We all have our unique memories. I remember accident and emergency at the Victoria hospital. No Worksop Sunday league anymore. I remember Worksop playing at central park and Neil Warnock was a referee with my dad in the Worksop Floodlit league.
All very well Tim and love the walkaround so thanks for taking the trip out there (I'll be there next Wed) but what's happening closer to home, the X Million destined for Dinnington? Heard owt?
I still go to Worksop and find the market and shops are good. After moving from Wincobank to Harthill my mum and dad used to run a market stall in Worksop (and other places around the area) back in the 80's when my dad was made redundant (a few times). My dad worked at Unbrako until ultimatley made redundant for the final time... and ended up stuck in the ***ty food factory up Kivo way for the remainder of his working life. My mum ended up having to take a secretary job on to help us make ends meet. I think various things have brought the area down over time. Death of local industry didn't help like with most places. Tescos being built took quite a lot of traffic away from the town and market stalls back in the mid 80's and through the 90's. I remember us driving from Harthill to Worksop and seeing the A57 bridge being built as you skirt past Rhodisia. The road under the railway always seemed to be flooded back then. I remember the ford in Shireoaks down spring lane and Pratts garage... there is no trace of either now. One thing Worksop didn't get back in the 90's like most other towns was one of those awful retail parks... the one they ended up building on sandy lane wasn't very big so didn't have too many shops to entice people away. i think that has helped keep the place alive too. Nothing like it used to be though.
I asked my dad to show me where the Ford was I remembered it, but couldn't remember where it was. I did my work experience at Unbrako steels 78/79. Family moved to Anston in 66 from Woodhouse/Handsworth and I remember seeing the earth diggers building the M1. Parents said they looked at Wincobak, but all they could see was smoke over the Don Valley.
after all the comments i was born and bred in this town, and no its not the same as it used to be,shops and pubs shut down but thats the centre of worksop..the outskirts of worksop in general are very good, and i still love my worksop...apart from my 2 locals in kilton been ripped down, the lord byron which is now a coop, and the flamingo which is now a car park..we had some great times in both ...
I've never been but from your video it doesn't look too run down and didn't notice any graffiti From what you say, it does look better than Rotherham although that's not too hard lol
It used to be so nice. But there about 50/60 banned from local shops for shoplifting. Massive drugs issue. The paving is now needing repairing. A lot the buildings have had some money spent on them. Its the undercurrents you don't see on video.
My grandparents came across every Wednesday from Handsworth to got there. When it was school holidays we would have tea cakes and coffee in the Davys cafe by the Queens head. Electric in those days, now dead even though I tried to spin it positive.
Worksop is not as welcoming as it was many tears ago... There are too many unsavoury types hanging about and definitely not in work.... Retford, although a little fugher east, is more amenable

Argos is in Sainsbury. Big mistake.

Paul I am told that the market has been moved back to 2025. Its all about Rotherham centre at our expense.

There is nothing wrong with the town centre Hank but people aren't supporting it.
@@timawells yes the council...always passed on to retford..because thats the mps territory..
@@hankwaddingham5025 Last one spent 4 years in Worksop.
Looks a step up from Mansfield town centre. That looks totally dystopian today.
They have done a lot of work on the buildings, but once thriving Worksop is as dead as a dodo.
my aunties shop was the stylo if anybody can remember it ..next to woolworths...
Was that a clothes shop. My mother used to drag me into the singers shop where they sold sewing machines.
@@timawells her shop was next to woolworths shoe shop..
@@hankwaddingham5025 Does ring a bell now.
Not many people once you get away from the market area.
Those traffic lights as you drove in used to be packed and the streets into Worksop.
Is there an in door market ?
I don't think there has ever been an indoor market.
there is supposed to be one soon..

My Mum years ago loved going to Worksop Market
My grandparents came across every Wednesday from Handsworth to got there. When it was school holidays we would have tea cakes and coffee in the Davys cafe by the Queens head. Electric in those days, now dead even though I tried to spin it positive.

I still prefer Worksop I can put up with the undesirables as they stay away from me.
