When Julus took a sip of the warm soup and the Resistance Delegate who was talking to him said "It's the little things that make life worth living, don't you think?", I bawled. Flow is more than just one of the key leitmotifs of Endwalker in this moment. It's indicative of the path we've traveled, a cycle that has placed us in a similar role to the one who guided us.
Flow is the music we associate with Hydaelyn/Venat, alongside Answers. (Which is appropriately what her final theme is a derivation of.) We hear it during our visions of her and during much of the time we spend one on one with her in Elpis, reminding us of how she guides us, nurtures us as her chosen Warriors of Light.
We do much the same for Meteon. We tend to her and guide her during our times alone with her in Elpis. We try to understand her, support her, acting almost as an older sibling or even a parent, like Venat has done for us.
We do the same throughout the Ultima Thule alongside the Scions. Again and again they try to make her see the error in her thinking, that existence and life aren't hopeless and pointless, but through self sacrifice and appeals to logic that work for adults. It's only in the moment you show, that penultimate attempt to make her understand before we face the Endsinger, when every one of our friends has given their all to try and make her see, that we finally have our chance.
And we use love. Understanding. A gesture of meaningful kindness, fulfilling the promise from Hermes that she held onto for however many thousands of years without realizing it in the dark and cold place she was in. Only when we do that, only when we realize we're not just dealing with another harbinger of doom but a child who tragically had her innocence ripped away, are we finally able to get through. It takes you, the player, who has been through so much to make it to this point, to guide her and help her see in the exact same way Hydaelyn guided us.
It's a beautiful and brilliant bit of storytelling. Endwalker at its very best.

    • @00yiggdrasill00
      @00yiggdrasill00 Рік тому +11

That's... actually impressively thought out. We start out very like meteon, simply looking for adventure and fun, but it spirals so much further once venat gets involved. The difference is Hermes made her and set her loose without proper guidance through her sisters mental link to find his own answer, while venat guides and protects us through those first stumbling steps as we find our own will and path...and then we take our experience and tech meteon in the very short time we have before it all goes wrong and then teach her where she got it wrong. How very interesting that the wol becomes a parental figure right as we meet the woman who became hydalen face to face...and what a mirror it is to how things could have gone given how beyond human the warrior is even without a blessing.

"Know this my children. There is more ugliness than beauty in this world.
To live is to suffer. To drink of calamity and drown in anguish. To toil and be tested, always and ever.
'Tis a perilous path you walk. Death lurks in the dark, and is the sole promise that awaits at journey's end.
You will tremble with terror. You will weep tears of anger and despair
...but do not avert your eyes. See your life for what it is.
Then you will see how the hardships make you strong. Every doubt reforged as scales for your armor. Every agony to temper your blade."

A streamer picked out that it sounds very similar to His Theme. It evokes those same emotions of sadness and joy, The fear and meleancholy of loss. The swelling happiness of love. Hopeful Dynamis plays when there is a small glimmer of light that pierces the darkness of all the despair around us. The soup scene with Julus, this scene with Meteion. They are both heart wrenchingly sad and overwhelmingly filled with light and hope at the same time. This is what I would call Soken's truest masterpiece.

While this song was perfect for this scene, it also worked so well in some of the other scenes earlier in the expansion (Jullus receiving hot soup by his former enemy, for example). Your follow up to this should be Neath Dark Waters, the Scions & Sinners arrangement. As Hopeful Dynamis worked so well to emphasize purity and hopefulness, Neath Dark Waters worked so well at emphasizing melancholy.

Something that always stands out to me in songs portraying innocence, like this one and especially His Theme from Undertale is that chiming sound (I'm nowhere near a musician so I'm not sure what it is). It never fails to remind me of a music box or a mobile hanging over a baby's crib playing a lullaby.

The images are so powerful in this. Gentle words of support. A hand, warm and soft, touching your cheek, maybe wiping a tear away. A steady march together before finally sending you on your way, on your own but not alone.

I have watched many people go through the MSQ. Not once have I gone through the Meteion scene and not teared up when the piano hits... not once.

  • @loner419

Even during her final fight, Meteion is essentially a scared child, raging against a thing that terrifies her to her core.
In the last phase, her moves become less of a planned attack and more of her flailing against a thing she can't stop, again, like a child.
The fact that fight has to many emotional highs and lows is no joke a roller coaster.
It was VERY DIFFICULT to do the following content because I kept tearing up.

Endwalker really really hit me in the feels and didn't let up the entire time. A huge part of that was the music, the payoff for playing through the story wouldn't be what it is without the music. Honestly the music is what originally drew me to FFXIV in the first place, and I've been pleasantly surprised as time has gone on, I've teared up, I've felt pumped up. When that perfect music hits at an emotional point in the game you really CAN'T help but cry.

Not sure if you've already reacted to it, but "The Best is Yet to Come" from MGS 1 is amazing too. It'd also be thematically appropriate since St Patrick's day is soon and the song is sang entirely in the Irish language, Gaelige.

Truly one of the greatest moments i've had in gaming, period. Been playing since the SNES and honestly this whole expansion is at least top 2 for me, if not the premier spot. FFXIV as a whole definitely takes it for me (I'm a big story guy so be understanding :P). I love this game. It's truly special. A lot of people wouldn't give it a ten but I would give it higher.

Seen most so far, but I sadly can't watch this one yet.
Recently (as in, 45 days ago) picked up FFXIV for reals, and I am slowly working my way through it, currently sitting in the "Post-MSQ" bit of Stormblood.
I will return and watch this, as well as your other FFXIV videos, when they are no longer spoiler territory for me. :)
I always hear "Oh, but just you wait, it gets better later", and every time I respond with "BUT IT'S ALREADY SO GOOD THO?!"
Have a good day, see you in the next vid, perhaps. :)
