Edwin is EXACTLY where I’m at in my flight training. I’m doing the same with my landings; holding too high and then letting it drop. But I know if I keep at it, it’ll click soon. The low approaches have helped very much. I’m so glad I have a CFI like you; patient, motivating and FUN! I’m enjoying this series so much!

Landings are the hardest thing for me currently, always different environments that can completely change how you do things. Im starting to adapt to each and every situation and correcting for them. Its been very discouraging at times but it all takes practice and the journey has been amazing.
Landings are definitely a struggle. Once you get the technique and build confidence with it, you'll be landing like a champion everywhere you go.
Thats SO cool that ATC threw him a curveball like that! Would probably make him feel better knowing ATC knows hes training and is aware of him
The forward slip was key to my first solo (J3)…… Had to learn to control it before my CFI jumped out……
It’s always in the back of my mind. While I haven’t used it to land in a long time, I have used it to drop altitude quickly a couple times. And that pinning to the side of the cockpit….. gah, it never gets old!
@LewDix Aviation I wish all instructors were like you. You really keep your students heads up when they may feel defeated. Just your excitement, and happiness when they get it is amazing. Keep up the good work mate.

He is progressing very nicely. I like how you state to hold the nose the plane to the end of the runway and when you feel that last sink, pull back on the yoke. Them darn radio calls. What you said about them taking over all thoughts is so true. I'm still not good at controlled airports as probably 95% of my training was at uncontrolled. Towards the end of my training my CFI started playing tower. I had to answer him along with making standard calls at uncontrolled airport. That was a struggle at first but as I did it more it didn't take as much brain power.
At the 28 minute mark - explaining the view the pilot should be seeing down the runway - that is valuable information!! When actually flying, a student/pilot has but only a few seconds to actually process the information for a flawless landing. But to now see it on video - priceless!! Although I have my PPL - I'll be going out with my CFI this week to use this info to improve my landings. Thanks!!

Lew, your best yet! Great instructing, as usual. This is exactly what I went through before I solo'd - I thought I''d never get it!. I had to change instructors to find someone who had the patience and gave good advice instead of criticism, then I knew I could do it, it just took a little more time! A great Instructor is worth their weight in gold!!!
I am at the exact same point as Edwin, and trying to shed that too high nose. I'm getting a better feel for it as I progress. I have a great CFI who makes it fun to fly (the same as you!). This is a great series and has helped me smile knowing I'm not the only one who is struggling with landings right now! 😜 I know I will get them down, because I want to solo soon!! Thanks for all you hard work Lewis!

In regard to this training video, he’s progressing well.
What helped for me when landing was not thinking end of runway, but I just tried to fly level as possible once I transitioned.. then as you say, once you feel the velocity fade and the plane starts to drop, I’d carefully and smoothly pull the nose up. My first times I would pull too quickly.. once I realized that I wasn’t as smooth as I thought, then it started coming together. Awesome videos!!
So much fun watching the playful banter. I just realized after more than 2 years of watching LewDix Aviation that Lewis laughs like Scooby-Doo!

Awesome video! This reminds me how scared I was to talk to ATC. I would do the exact same thing, they hit me up and I would freeze and look at the instructor and then attempt to repeat back what they just jabbered off. Even after getting my PPL it still gets my nerves going !

The funny thing about him looking to the instructor for approval is that I do the same thing with my organ teacher. As I am only 14, I'm always looking at him to make sure that I am playing the song correctly and he always says "Don't look at me! Look at the music!"

Love the video. Just finished my ppl in the Cessna and did transition training to the archer2 because we only have 2 of 4 planes instrument qualified. Flying the Archer is more fun than the 172. Energy management is more important because of the higher landing speed, but easily manageable.
99% of people I speak to that transition, much prefer the PA28. It’s a much better aircraft.

Might help a tiny bit for Edwin to leave out “November” on his radio calls. He says “Cherokee”…. Cherokee 32042 vs Cherokee (pause) November 32042. 🤷🏻♂️ little nit picking thing, but might make it easier.
You should take a mirror with you so when the student is about to look at you for approval pull out the mirror and hold it between you.
Have you ever had a student that after the first or several flights, you knew they weren’t going. “to get it”? If so what did you do?
I’ve only had one student that I knew I couldn’t help. He moved to another state which made things simpler for me 😅

Hey Lew. What is your opinion on the ACS wording for when a student pilot should be allowed to solo? From what I understand the wording states that the student should be "safe and proficient". Not necessarily perfect. Is that about right?
I am not sure, from the camera view, what you mean when you say the student is holding the nose too high? From the camera view, the spinner is well slow the horizon/ end of the runway. Is it that the camera above your eyes that we get an improper view and feel like the student really isn’t pulling above the end of the runway? If that is the case, I would love or the camera to maybe be lowered to give us a more head high view. Love the videos. Still give education in an attention grabbing way. Also rather entertaining. Thanks
I think one of the most impressive skills of an instructor is sitting there and not jumping in to respond to ATC... I feel awkward with the silence and I am not in the plane!

Don't be discouraged if you don't solo at 10 hours and don't be cocky if you do solo at 10 hours. Many pilots better than you are dead from the dumbs.
Starting early, nice! Don’t settle for an instructor that you don’t get along with, or that doesn’t care about your progress. You are going to be paying a fairly large amount of money over your training and you are a customer. You deserve to be cared about.

Lewis, do you guys not bother with carb heat over there in Florida? Over here in the UK we are taught to use carb heat whenever the enginer is brought to idle or low RPM and switch off when 500ft above the ground like on final. Interesting to know the reasons whys its omitted. On all the approaches on this video the carbheat was never cycled. I know its also based on POH too. Just curious on this one.
Hi Craig. I get that question a lot. The POH states for landing: “Carburetor heat should not be applied unless there is an indication of carburetor icing, since the use of carburetor heat causes a reduction in power which could be critical if a go-around be necessary.”
In PA28’s I adhere to this and only use it if I suspect carburetor ice has formed. Hope that helps!
@LewDix Aviation Hey Lewis, yeah I totally get that, however I was taught many years ago to apply carb heat as soon as the engine is brought to low RPM/idle as the risk of icing increases. Carb heat will remain on until 50ft QFE where it is then removed to allow the additional power in the event of a go-around. Just thinking if a pilot was to go somewhere more humid, like say flying here in the cold, raining UK, they may not use carb heat at all as it has not been drilled into them at training, which could be fatal.
@@craig221081 I understand your logic, but the instructions from the manufacturer are clear. I’ve never once had carburetor ice at low RPM settings and if you think about it, carb ice can form in a wide range of temperatures. It’s not just cold air that is favourable to it’s formation. In florida we have high humidity and when temperatures here are favourable (anywhere from 70-100f so they say) carb ice has the potential to form. Some carburetors are more prone to icing than others. PA28’s are not as prone to it than, let’s say a Cessna. I’m just following the procedure in the POH.

So what happens after a student goes solo?
Are all subsequent lessons done as a solo student ie. cross countrys ext.
After solo training continues. My way is to move onto the cross country phase of flying with other solo flights sprinkled in. Once ready, they’ll do solo cross countries to finish the solo hour requirements.

I’m 59. I grew up in the birthplace of aviation; Dayton Ohio. I walked to a local country airport and sat at the end of the runway to watch airplanes landing. I went to the FBO and hung out and spoke with the aviators. The FBO offered me a job as a ‘line boy’ and I fueled airplanes. I took a few lessons there as my finances could allow, and even ground school. So I was flying airplanes at 14! But life happened and I couldn’t pursue my passion anymore. Fast forward to 2022; I’ll be 60 by years end. I’ve started my training at the beginning 2022. My goal is to get my Private Pilot Certificate by my 60th birthday.
I am also old and I have just started aviation lessons this year, it's fun :-)

Yea! Because it's MPH that you can see. Knots is on the smaller, inside scale.
