Genius. Pure genius is what we just watched! Kevin is legitimately the most broadly talented member of PTX. He's a high tenor who would be considered freakishly good if he was not being (rightfully) compared to Mitch, and he also plays the saxophone at a very gifted level. Beyond his musical gifts, he speaks fluent Mandarin and was studying pre-Med at Yale when he was recruited to join Pentatonix. Not just another pretty face!
He actually played Carnegie Hall twice, the first time was for piano, the second for saxophone. He was a cellist with the Yale Symphony Orchestra. He is incredibly intelligent and exceptionally gifted in music.
Its good you caught this before you hit Christmas stuff where he is more apt to sing parts because most people just have to stop during, well, the first stop is usually Mary Did You Know.
If you really want to see something truly spectacular from Kevin. This past year he did a solo at one of the Pentatonix concerts. It's called Kevin's 5th, that will truly blow your mind and Scott also gives a brief history on how they found Kevin
Cannot say enough how proud I am of my cousin Kevin Olusola. He is such an incredible human being and a huge blessing. What a beautiful soul. Such an awesome, talented, phenomenal, magnificent person. Love this dude so much. Kevin, you are the man. Love you cuz 🔥🥰🥹🥹🥹🙏🙏🙏🤩🤩🫵🫵🫵🫵
Kevin. A true genius. Our modern day renaissance man. The gifts these people possess individually are astronomical. Together they constitute a miracle. More please!
The man is a genius! Recommend his live performance of Kevin’s Fifth. Link: ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html Just so you know, Pentatonix’s bass, Matt, can also play the drums.
Kevin’s Fifth - Live performance of Kevin on last year’s Christmas tour. I was lucky enough to see them in NC. I recommend this one - it’s amazing. ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html
this is why pentatonix sound as good as they do because ALL the members are far more talented than we think they are, Kevin is a prime example he dose mainly beatboxing but as you can see and hear he not only can do that but he can play instruments and Sing with a really great tone in his voice.
It's an electric cello and he is using a looper...he went to Juilliard on a saxophone scholarship (I'm pretty sure)...he was also pre-med and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese...watch Thunderstruck with two guys playing absolutely crazy cello...Kevin has other one man band videos too
Kevin is just insanely talented! As if what you just watched isn't sufficient, he's also concert-caliber on the saxophone. And then the cherry on top is that megawatt smile at the end! He knows he absolutely nailed that.
Kevin might be an advanced human from the future sent back to show us our potential. Or Kevin could be the DaVinci of our time. Kevin is such a true genius and a musical genius. He has so many talents in him I can't believe he hasn't self-combusted. Can play multiple instruments, sing, beatbox, write, compose, speaks multiple languages, perfect pitch, as if that wasn't enough, he was pre-med at Yale. He is also a humble and wonderful human. Maybe when he is done making music, he can become of Nobel Laureate after curing cancer and brokering world peace.
I love seeing the shock and awe in the faces of people who simply weren't expecting so much excellence in a single performance! This makes me wish everyone had these instruments and equipment to play around with! Fantastic reaction, as always!
They are ALL EXTREMELY talented They ALL have side solo projects. They are PHENOMENAL together but their side/solo projects are SO REACTION worthy 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Listen I been a fan of Pentatonix for years. Every member is talented in their own way but Kevin is by far the most talented member. I promise he can do just about anything
What I love about this is you'd picture someone practicing for hours to be able to do this but I just have this sense that it didn't take him as long as it probably would take a regular scrub like us haha. KO is seriously not to be underestimated but DAMN. Glad to watch your reaction, it was very satisfying!! ps. I left a Ko-Fi but forgot to mention PTX in retrospect! The video makes it clear but I have to laugh because I could have sworn I typed their name but my brain did not command my fingers to hit the keys, I guess!! Sorry about that
Maddy....I have watched many reactions to this insanely talented performance, but this might just be my favorite! Your combination of shock, admiration and joy made my day! 😊
Oh, I could not open your video quick enough! Love seeing reactions to this video!! Kevin has some crazy, mad skills!! His voice surprised me the first time I saw the video because I only had heard him beatbox, as well. His voice is amazing! He’s got that rich tone and buttery vocals! Love it!! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and seeing how surprised you were with all of the elements of it!!
🎼🎼⭐️🔥⭐️🔥⭐️🎼 .. I love this as much as you do , Maddy .. I was blown away when I first saw this. But , get this .. there are a few more videos that are even wilder, crazier , and more talented that Kevin performs .. he even dances in one of them. Totally amazing. 🌀🌀💙🌀🌀💙🌀🌀💙🌀🌀
That crunchy tone he’s getting from the cello comes from either an overdrive or distortion pedal (both commonly used by guitarists). It boosts the output signal of the instrument and gives it that raunchy grit.
"How does he make a cello sound like an electric guitar?" First, start with an electric cello, which that clearly is. Then, and I'm guessing this part, there's probably a setting for "guitar," like the setting for "organ" on an electric keyboard. Still, it's genius. Kevin is a concert-level cellist and has an inspired creative mind. Always a joy to watch and listen to. Great reaction!
Love that you’ve started listening to the PTX-members solo projects, hope you’ll do more from KO and check out some from Avi Kaplan too! His Change on the rise is a good one to start with!
If you have heard Tia Gua play the theme to "Wonder Woman" that is also on an electric cello. Kevin sings sparingly in PTX songs but there are a few. "Mary did you Know" for one.
The instrument Kevin is playing is an electric cello. It has the same relationship to a "normal' cello as an electric guitar has to an acoustic guitar, i.e., the sound can be manipulated electronically before you hear it. Since both a cello and a guitar have strings that are strummed/plucked, you can make an electric cello sound very much like an electric guitar, as Kevin does here and in the video of Kevin's Fifth - recommended! One thing that's interesting to point out about a cello (well, any of the string instruments) vs a guitar is that while a guitar has frets that can help you figure out where your hand is on the neck, a cello doesn't have anything - so where you put your hand in order to generate a specific note is totally a matter of muscle memory, meaning lots...and Lots...and LOTS of repetition in order to get it right every time.
Pentatonix found Kevin on You Tube from a viral video that showed him beat boxing and playing the cello. His regular cello(non electric travels with them and is named Beyonce. He ia classically trained cellist who has played at Carnegie Hall. When Pentatonix originally contacted, he was a senior at Yale in Pre-med and was planning on being a medical missionary to China. Aren't we lucky that he changed his mind?
The background music technique is looping. A young lady very talented at looping goes by "I Am Kawehi". Here are a couple from her channel, ua-cam.com/video/ykIwtNyASVM/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/8ohpP4LItvs/v-deo.html, also ua-cam.com/video/O3GiDF0tV94/v-deo.html
Yep, a chello, an electric one. Although Kevin can sing, where most songs are concerned, his beatboxing is valued more. Not to say that Pentatonix doesn't support his singing. When he was sharing an apartment with Avi Kaplan, in their start up years, Avi taught him, then he carried on with singing lessons afterwards. I'd like to suggest that you look at Avi Kaplan and his solo work, starting with 'Change on the Rise'. Another suggestion is watching the "Two Cello's" doing Thunderstruck.
If you want some more ceazy cello players, I'd highly recommend checking out 2cellos. Their cover of thunderstruck is a good start, and its absolutely epic
As everyone has said, Kevin is amazingly talented. If you want to see another cool guitar-like cello solo, check out Postmodern Jukebox's cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On" sung by Morgan James. She's another amazing singer and the arrangement is fabulous.
The Cello has electric pick-ups like an electric guitar (since it obviously doesn’t have a resonating body). So it‘s obviously like an electric guitar, only in form of a cello. And as such, you can add distortion (like with an electric guitar).
You have not yet reacted to „Amazing Grace“ or „Mary did you know“ by PTX - he sings in both songs. And it‘s a Cello, he plays the cello in „Shallow“ and „Say something“ (PTX) (and he is actually „Cello-boxing“) And in live shows, he even does his own interpretation by Beethoven‘s 5th Sinfonie!
Kevin will never brag about how incredible he is, but he KNOWS it - that smile at the end says everything. Totally humble, but he knows. NOW.... 1. You've never heard anyone play a cello like that. Allow me to introduce you to 2CELLOS - and strap in, these two will make you question everything you think you know about music. I would recommend that you check out AC/DC's original Thunderstruck (AC/DC - Thunderstruck (Official Video) - ua-cam.com/video/v2AC41dglnM/v-deo.html )if you are not familiar with the song, so you have a reference for what they're playing. And even though it's a music video, you can tell they're really playing the song, you'll see what I mean. 2CELLOS - Thunderstruck [Official Video]: ua-cam.com/video/uT3SBzmDxGk/v-deo.html 2. If you thought this video was good, check out these others from Kevin: Sign of the Times (Harry Styles KOver) - Kevin Olusola: ua-cam.com/video/hBFlhLEU7uU/v-deo.html And this one is an original written by Kevin, showcasing his singing voice (his tone at the beginning sounds almost ethereal, it's incredible), his beatboxing and cello playing (called "celloboxing") Renegade - Kevin Olusola: ua-cam.com/video/gouiY85kD2o/v-deo.html
Being a little bit of an old fart I prefer his upgrade of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by the Animals, 1965. Since you love this and have heard some Home Free there are some Adam Rupp drum solos on UA-cam. If you dare, there's a duo, 2Cellos, whose cover of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" would be a good introduction.
The cello is a Yamaha electric. What did we just watch?? Pure magic. Pure talent.
