Not too sure if I remember correctly, but I think there was a way to avoid the death of Pidgey, in the older games you can cancel the poison tick by either saving and closing the game and reopening, fishing, and I think even going through your inventory (not sure on the last one), still though, glitching may not have been as fun and entertaining as dealing with the consequences of rng
