If you use wood wedges make sure its completely dry. Insert the wood then flip it up where the wood is parralel to the ground get yourself some clamps big enough to hold the tip of the wood to the face on the opposite side. Use 2 or 3 clamps for best results, then get a spray bottle fill it with HOT water and start spraying the wood wedges evenly as it absorbes the wood will expand and the clamps holding will keep pulling tword the device once the wood expands enough itll crack at the weakest point (the sawed down weld) and the top peice comes right off plus you get the added benefit of feeling cool knowing you used the same tech to pry off the top, as the ancient Egyptians did to evenly break rock thus creating the stones used for building the pyramids xD its a win win really lol
Since I was buying a lot of these microwaves from walmart down in Florida it was easier to buy a small electric 3 inch grinder from harbor freight and grind the weld. Put the oven back together put back in box an tape it up. Tell walmart it would not fit in the microwave spot over the stove.
Put a car headlight in series with the electro- magnet and it will limit the current. The headlite will draw a few amps but won't cause coil to heat up enough to burn out the coil.
cores are laminated to reduce heat buildup by limiting Eddy currents. Lacquer is commonly painted on and used as an insulating layer between cores and on wires also. Have fun.
Do you have some calculation formulas for the electromagnets? How the wire thickness and the area of the core affect the lifting force? Great video! I have an electromagnet with a lifting force of 40 kg (88.2 pounds) and it's really fun. I'm making a simple linear vibrating feeder with it. :) It's really cool - I love electromagnets.
The reason is to keep winding uniform thickness on each level as you layer them. The current going through the wires will still go in one direction. Visualize it as a wire from battery negative terminal, then in your mind run that wire from battery to every room in your house around every piece of furniture and running in every possible way then return to the battery holding wire in your hand. Then you know no matter what that the wire in your hand is the same so the flow of electrons and the magnet field it creates are always the same direction. Flowing from one terminal through the wire to the other other terminal to create a continual loop. Hope it helps.
Wondeeing why secondary winding is not used if it has more turns?they typically use primary winding. I guess because it can hold up to standard house current without melting?
How do you stop the electromagnet from getting hot? I bought two large ones and they get too hot to touch. I connected them to a 12v battery and after 30 minutes they are at boiling point

Wait, no load resistor? How are you stopping and regulating the amps that flow? If you dont load resistor the windings will melt in no time......... I have seen these videos all over UA-cam and if you make one plug it in and wait for it........

it is not a bad idea to tell the people that at to many turns the induction voltage after disconecting can be dangerus! its easy to build something like a igniton coil from old cars! i have start to male one magnet with 5.04mm wire at 210m lenght. 10kg copper! that will make sparks!
You could probably use the secondary coil from the transformer to make another electromagnet. Maybe with the cut-off top as a core. So, I ask, could you just connect the two coils together electrically and make a more powerful electromagnet in the first place?

Do not create sparks at a battery. The gasses coming off will ignite and the battery will explode. I think the one you used was a sealed battery. But still very dangerous. Connect with a switch at a distance from the battery.
That's only if you plan to use it with AC. Splitting the core up into laminated sheets is done to reduce eddy currents formed in the core due to the changeing magnetic field associated with AC. If all you want is an electromagnet that you will run off of DC, a solid core is just as good.
Heat generated is proportional to the square of the current. So Heat = (I^2)k. So to reduce the heat produced you must lower the current, which in turn weakens your electromagnet.

Eddy currents are not a consideration with DC.

Always wrap the same direction going backwards changes the polarity and then thay cancel each other out

That is a good point. I agree a load resistor in series would be a good idea to reduce the current flow and therefore heat.
