Runescape can be horribly addicting but as a child it taught me how to type, how supply and demand works(ge), and how to spot a scammer on the internet lol
Same, at first my typing was like 30 wpm from this school program called Mavis Beacon in 3rd grade. After playing rs for probably less than a year, I was at 80+ wpm and barely even noticed.
Run escape is perfect for younger people soon to enter the workforce to try, it will completely prepare them to work for a terribly mismanaged company doing empty task after empty task repetitively for the rest of their lives to no truly tangible reward while the mismanaged company owners prosper. The speed of their success or failure will be entirely judged by luck. Even if they are successful at the game it can be taken away completely by the mismanaged company owners for the wrong reason completely. Old School Run escape is just a real life simulator boys. it is just a real life simulator.
I never told anybody this, but a big turning point for me in the direction of my inner moral compass was when I was like 11 or 12 and I made my character female to pretend to be someone's rs gf to scam them out of their armor because i really wanted a granite body. It actually worked on a guy, i said "gee i wonder how it looks like on a girl. Trade me?" and he was like "Idk I worked really hard for this i fished lobsters for so many hours... But I trust you." He actually traded to me. I popped it on and typed "Neato" then swiftly took it off and traded it back. I couldn't do that to him. I sympathized with him. Couldn't stand the thought of being the villain. I absolutely don't regret my decision.
meanwhile I mined iron in Al Kharid for a couple hours with a guy when I was like 8 (~2009), told him I would totally act as an in-between to swap his guthix helmet and legs to his alt (you couldn't log into multiple accounts back then I think). Accepted the trade, put him in my ignore list and stopped mining for the day. I felt bad about it for a while back then before realizing it was basically part of the game.
I got trust traded a dragon axe when I first started OSRS, and my adrenaline was pumping. I walked away to the bankstandin ge crowd only to read him talking about how untrustworthy I am. I gave it back and felt way better.
I cannot stress how much this game stunted my development as a person. I was 9 years old, early fourth grade, i started playing runescape because I had seen my cousins playing it and my best friend at the time wanted to play it together. Soon my parents got divorced, and then my grandmother who we were all really close with died. Runescape became a completele coping mechanism for me. I was only allowed to play 30 minutes a day (eventually 45) but all I could ever think about was Runescape. I hit puberty in fifth grade, I was super socially awkward and it was super heightened by the fact that you could literally without consequence say anything on rs. You could be who you really were and it was so easy. I was really good at baseball but I didn't want to play it anymore. I hated going to games, as soon as I started playing baseball again I would love it. But the minute I got back home I just wanted to play runescape. What ultimately made me quit was in 2015/2016, I was really into competitive pvp but my home laptop was too slow to run the game. Tenth grade was over, and the first quarter of junior year, the first time I hadn't played runescape in 7+ years, I had a 95+ average and I was in several AP classes. That was compared to my 86 flat before. I've been the scholar of my department in college the last 2 years. I've always been really smart but I cared 0 about school when I played runescape. The only thing thar made the experience worthwhile were the friends I made along the way, and even then I talk to only one of them semi regularly anymore. I play osrs every so often to give me that childhood nostalgia again. But I refuse to let it do to me what it did before. I was not a healthy person but without it I've grown so much.
As a lower, Lower middle class youth growing up in the 90s-00s American east coast suburbs. My RS addiction probably saved my life. I may have OD’d like so many others or simply not have worked towards my goals.
I got into RuneScape and LoL when I started going blind at 16 for no reason, out of the blue. It really helped me get away from reality, I lost one eye and kept one. Although it helped me get through a rough period, it somewhat extended it. You can only escape reality for so long, and once you start to go back to it, it becomes harder. Those feelings and problems will still be there.
If anything this game teaches patience, economizing your time, and severe delayed gratification. I don't think it's a surprise that me and all my friends who played this when we were young all got stem degrees and have good jobs or are in grad school now. Maybe you have to have played it as a kid to fully enjoy it now, but there's this odd sense of clam and satisfaction from the game that's hard to describe to people who didn't play it as a child.
If it weren't for Runescape I never would have met my wife. Mining coal in draynor/lumbridge swamp back in 2007. 14 years later we have 3 tiny terrorists, I mean sons. Sure it is a time sink, but it is my choice to play, not an addiction to kick. Folks real salty about "wasting time" but will swipe down praying for a refresh on their Facebook feed just to feel connected to someone. 🤷♂️
I genuinely think that runescape made me better with money IRL. Having to play a game, pouring hours of time to earn money to afford better items etc taught me to spend it carefully cause I didn't want to spend another 10 hours spinning flax. At the of 13... Same skills help me today. Money that takes me 6 months to save up is generally spent wisely, or at least, carefully. Modern games are so fast paced and reward so readily and easily it's making people want everything upfront without actually having to work for it. But am I grateful? No.
