When the horse flies get bad I would take two small branches off a young tree, cedar works well, stick the stems under my suspenders on my shoulders so they would cross over my back and wiggle around when I moved. It will at least keep them off your back.
Makes you wounder what they eat when you ain't around? :)
Good cutten and try not to get any on ya.

Olive oil, bugs hate it. It's great for your skin. Not to mention makes your whole body run efficiently especially the lungs. Doesn't need refrigeration just keep cooler in dark place. Just don't mix with other stuff or then needs refrigerator.
    Hope this helps
    Take care

On fairly calm days when the air was still & the flies were bad, I'd sometimes pour a little chain oil in the muffler to make a smoke screen to help fend them off for a while.
Have to admit, there was also the odd time I even went as far as increasing the mix oil ratio a tad to help deal with the buggers. Rather breathe the smoke and run the saw rich than get chewed on all day.
Pacific Coast Horse Flies are the worst.
They don't just bite, they draw blood.
And if they manage to get a good grip on you they'll excavate a chunk of your flesh.

When the bugs get bad I eat a small clove of pickled garlic every day. Does a good job keeping the flys away…and people.

WOW! Its a shame how that last log is lost. Horse flies and deer flies can REALLY bite!

So the last tree you bucked it sounded like the log went in the stream down below.

In the UK when I go out I use a spray caled Jungle Formula. That repels a lot of things . Spray on arms and neck and keep out of eyes.

I guess there is a reason for the phrase, "This is really bugging me!" Yes, horse flies hurt. In my last 5 jobs, I have been stung by yellow jackets several times each time, stepped in fire ants a couple of times, and have had something take residence under my helmet and given me a reminder on unpleasant things. I understand your pain/aggravation.

Citronella oil and there was a product from Avon i can't think of the name and yes the bug dope with 100% deet (no longer in circulation) always worked the best, or just keep moving and they somewhat left you alone, Deer flies and Horse flies... yup very persistent, take a steak sized chunk of skin off of ya 😊

Some really nice Cedars today Bjarne.
I can see a few of those bastard horseflies cruising around (they are the worst)
I would take their wings off whenever possible and make them walk for the rest of their days lol
    Stay safe out there ✊

You can see the horseflies in the camera. Those buggers up north can run an entire herd of caribou to exhaustion when they catch them in the low country. They will stampede for the elevation of the mountains. Sure can understand how they feel. They are so numerous at times that they can infest animals with their eggs under the skin. Makes a guy think how nice some aspects of winter are!! They seem to come out in the hottest time of summer but they also seem to only be in some areas whereas a quarter mile away there are none. Good luck with them. Bug dope doesn't faze them as they regard it as steak sauce! Bite right through thin clothes. When they do they take a chunk of meat. Itch like hell and don't heal for a few days.

The horseflies are bad. Lots of them this summer in Alberta, too. Plus lots of wasps, including ground wasps. One really has to be careful not to disturb their nests. So far only got bitten by one, but it hurt for several days. Do you get wasps at that elevation? Hope not.

Start eating a few oranges a day, bugs hate citric acid and it comes out when you sweat. Learned that years ago when we were going through a case of Muskol a week but one guy on the crew never needed it and we couldn't figure out why and he didn't know either. One day someone noticed he ate 3 oranges a day so we gave it a shot and damned if it didn't work better then most repellents after about a week.

You need to buy a product called Skintastic bug repellent it doesn’t have a bad smell and does not leave your skin oily. It is the best I have found for black flies and deer flies and we have some mean ones here in Maine.😎

  • @IRONHORSE427RACING

Buddy we know just how you feel. The Black Deer flies are bad but so are the freaking mosquitoes....it's like we got a bunch of them Northern terradactyl skeeters this summer here ! We don't like using all the nasty bugs spray crap on our skin or clothes but seriously there are only a few things that really work that's not full of cancer causing chemicals now days. We have tried the stuff from Avon that the wife got us and just about every herbal mix of natural spray stuff you can find and none work for both skeeters and flies....maybe we should invent something non harmful that really works and retire huh ?

Are you considered an “employee” or sub contract labor? Same company all the time? Wondering as you also do fire cleanup.
