  • One of the things that is often underestimated or disregarded when it comes to glorifying the Digital Nomad Lifestyle is LONELINESS. Working remotely (and travelling full time) takes up a lot of time and can have a massive impact on your private and social life. #workingremotely #digitalnomadlifestyle
As a travelling Digital Nomad I love the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, but one of my biggest struggles with the location independent lifestyle is missing close friends and family. And because I figured that I'm not the only one - because the same rules apply to travelling solo!! - I've listed some tips on how to deal with loneliness as a digital nomad or solo traveller in this video.

Have you ever felt lonely while travelling? What did you do?

Yes sometimes. I try to find something I enjoy like sport or photography. I also look for communities abroad that do the same, usually through FB.

It's usually the hikes not the travel. Solo hiking on a less traveled trail can sometimes feel lonely when you haven't seen a face for hours. I stop look around and think how this moment is just for me and how no one else will ever have the same experience. That feeling fills me up and I press on. 🥂

Photography is my companion. I find I'm so involved in the moments I'm trying to capture or search out , that It doesn't even register as being alone. On another note your video introduction was great!

Finding like minding people in local communities is a great way to beat lonelyness. Sport and hobbies are things a lot of people share from all over the world.

@Greg Snell I'm sure you'll be looking for quiet time after hanging with that crazy gang that you're travelling with, eh?

When I am away from home, I make the use of technology to stay in touch with loved ones which is so much easier than years ago. Think your approach is a good way to negate any lonely moment Nellie. Nice opening segment to your vlog too 👍

Agreed, Social Media and the Internet in general has made communication easier and more affordable, especially across countries and time zones. Thanks for you comment! :)

I used to drive trucks around Eastern Europe from the UK, back in the late 80's.
No mobile service back then, no social media, no FB.
Getting out and talking to people, helps you not to feel lonely.
As a 52 yr old, some times I look at folk, with their heads buried in mobile devices, I feel they look insular.IMO.
Would I like todays technology back then? Probably not.
    Nice vlog Nellie.

Love it and almost difficult to imagine now that there was a time before cell phones, right? 😊 I might be another generation but Greg and I consider ourselves lucky to still at least KNOW the time before the internet and social media. Disconnecting like that can be amazing!

You said you'd like some groups in the description, but they're not there?

Such a beautiful intro ❤ Thanks for the insight! Another tip is to connect with someone local already in advance if possible :)

Thank you!! 🧡 yes, connecting with locals is the best! I got lucky here in Malaga because it turned out some of our Spanish friends from Alicante had moved here a while ago so I got to see them AND got introduced to their friends this weekend. Speaking the local language helps, too. 🙂

@@NellieWinterYes, local language definitly helps a lot when staying in the same place for a while :) I'm in northern Norway for 5 years already, definitly wouldn't have worked out without the language.

Very insightful topic, Nellie. I find that a lot of people who don’t travel a lot, either for work or pleasure, do tend to look at others that travel and think that it’s all just such a glamorous lifestyle. I have travelled for work a few times in the last few years and it can be that but it’s also the other things too , like sometimes lonely, sometimes pressure to get the job done and sometimes just a slog. But you do get to see another place in the world, and that is ALWAYS a good thing! On a lighter note, imaginary Greg made me laugh out loud! Wow, he knows exactly what to say... 😉

I really like this topic, and I am glad you brought it up. It is always great to have the self time while solo traveling, but I can agree that it can get lonely at times especially when you are at a place with a lot of people and are by yourself. I had that feeling when I went to Dubrovnik back in 2017 when I was looking at the sea and the coastline after sunset, and I wished I had someone next to me. I like the ideas you have proposed. I usually keep in touch at times with friends and family when I do travel, and I am even planning to go to a travel conference in May which is great for meeting other travelers. I know a few friends of mine will stay in hostels which are also great ways to meet other travelers and make new friends.

Thanks Scott! You travel a ton, so you would definitely be familiar with the occasional feeling of loneliness and you're so right about sunset - that's when loneliness is most likely to kick in! What kind of travel conference is it and where? Sounds amazing anyway!! :)

It is called TravelCon. It is a convention for travelers, vloggers, bloggers, and photographers, and it is held in a different city in the United States each year. It is in New Orleans this May, and I am excited to go to it! It will be my first one!

Great video! I'm a keen supporter of openly discussing mental health and loneliness can be bad for it. So great video to open up the subject that isn't discussed on the highly publicised adventure nomad lifestyle. Always welcome to come to Scotland, may be an air bed on the floor but welcome to visit!!
