- Exploring Scotland's abandoned Dunalastair castle.
Dunalastair is a large ruined baronial castle dating to the mid 19th century and occupying a prominent site overlooking the eastern end of Loch Rannoch, where the River Tummel leaves it. The site is actually a promontory site, and footpaths lead to it from the main road past the burial ground of the Robertson Clan. It is not signposted and is fenced off for safety reasons since the building is definitely in a dangerous condition.
I believe that from late 1939, 1940 for sure, Dunalastair was in the hands of the Polish military. I know this because my father escaped Poland in '39 and ended up here with a group of Polish military high schoolers. It was used as a school until the early 1950's when it caught fire. My father finished his military high school in '42 and was shipped out to Italy and fought in the famous Battle of Monte Cassino. Anyway, my dad loved his time here. One of his last wishes was to spread some of his ashes here. He passed in 2012 at the age of 89, and in 2014 we went to Pitlochry Scotland and went to Dunalastair Castle and fulfilled his wishes. Shame that the place was never rebuilt to it's former glory. My dad did manage to get back here a few years before he passed. He was quite emotional at the state of the castle. I do have several photos of the castle from when my dad was there 1940-1942. It looked amazing. Just a wee bit of history for those curious.
Thank you sharing your story with us .
What a beautiful memory!
Beautiful story
What a lovely and emotional memory. Thank you sharing with us.
Amazing story. Thank you sharing
Thank you for the video. It is magnificent even now. This is what fairytales came from.
How sad seeing such a once magnificent structure crumbling like this.
Great video, well shot. Amazing ruin in a lovely location. The stonework looks very solid for the most part. I cannot help but a feel a suitably resourced and determined soul could still bring it back to it's former glory.
If this structure were made of wood it wouldn't even be here anymore.
This makes me sad to see such a beautiful Scottish castle abandoned and in disrepair.
Breathtaking. Beautiful video❤
Beautiful video David ,
Bun video. Cred că a fost un castel superb
Beautiful . I think it was a magnificent castle
I know! I just want to throw a couple million at it and make it look pretty again. Incredible!
@@joeysplats3209 I think it will look awesome if restored
What a shame.
Looking at it, I was like, that looks like it was made from stone at a time when it didn't really need to be made from stone. And then you said some guy designed it and I was like, yep. It's almost amazing that those timbers are still laying there and haven't rotted away. One presumes the roof was intentionally taken down to avoid taxes. Someone should get in there and refurbish it. It would be amazing, and you could just run it as a country inn for weekend getaways, basically a massive bed and breakfast.
Very nice❤
I've never understood why anyone would build a castle. Too large with no real purpose other than beauty. A General's home? Now that's an impressive income for a military man.
Nice Castle! 🏰 where is it in Scotland?
Close to Loch Rannoch
Beautiful, can you go inside?
What a waste of a beautiful building its fairytale turrets large windows , and the area surrounding it left to rot ..... Why ? 😢
Bezos with but a weeks profits could make this lovely & whole again.
Do even care about there history I mean why let it go in California things like this are kept up and repaired when needed
I don't get why either.
I wonder how many millions it would take to restore this building.
