I would like to add some personal family history associated with Dunalastair Castle. I would like to thank Alec and the guys for respecting this castle. To make what could be a long story short, I’ll start with this. In the late 1930's the castle became the home to displaced Poles ( Polish ). It was used for a time as a military high school. I know this because my father was one of the students there from Poland. This was 1940 through 1942. The students lived at the castle as well as finishing their high school education and military training. My father was 17/18 years old at the time. From photos that my dad had, and I have, the castle was beautiful and amazing. I have several outdoor photos and just a few of the interior which don't really show much. During his life my dad spoke of Pitlochry and the castle with extremely fond memories and a few outrageous stories. After all, they were teenagers getting ready to go to war. My wife, Scottish born, my son, my wife's sister and husband ( live in Glasgow) and my sister visited the ruins in 2011. My dad was still alive. My dad did manage to get to the ruins as well, late '90's maybe early 2000's. It was very emotional to say the least. My dad passed away in 2012. He was 89 and was a veteran of WWII. one of his wishes was to have some of his ashes spread at the castle. In 2014, the same group of us returned to the castle and fulfilled his wishes. That was very emotional for all of us. When we were there, there was no fence surrounding the ruins so we could peak inside, but didn’t dare go inside. I often wish, as some of the comments suggest, that it would be restored to it's former glory. If the explorers of the ruins ever read this, I can send images of the castle and the students from that era. This commentary may be of some interest to some, or maybe not. Non the less, this is an important part of my personal history. I thank the explorers for exploring and posting.
Lovely story,thanks for sharing
Great job lads, its just so sad that these mighty buildings are left crumble, it goes deeper and darker than humans can imagine, We have so much abundance but its been stollen from the 99% All these structures could be saved, research Tartaria and the mud floods, Tartarian Empire ❤
I would LOVE to see those photos wow what an amazing story!
Ok
I think Brits don't appreciate how amazing things like this appear to Americans. The house in which I grew-up was built in 1905. That is considered very ancient by our standards. In 2019 I fulfilled a life goal and traveled to Edinburgh. I was floored by the old preserved architecture in the Old Town and New Town. New Town Edinburgh is older than the USA!
I love history no matter what part of the world 🌍 it comes from
Ive got underpants older than the USA
Thats the entire european history my dude
I live in Tønsberg in norway, this town is now about 1005 years old. Medieval finds are commonplace. But thats why the americas are fascinating to us. Its a "new" world. Formed by a somewhat modern man. Not the klans and kings of old. Not the church or tyranny. Us Norwegians were almost as bad to our indigenous people as anyone else too, so we dont have any a cleaner conscience.
@@merqury5 truly nice words. Normally European people are hating non-stop. For example the part with "natives".
It’s a pity that all the clans that are associated with this castle cannot get together to raise the money to restore this beautiful building. Can you imagine the history involved here. It breaks my heart to see this. Anyone that can trace their or trace their ancestry back to this castle should be in a hurry to raise the money to restore it. It’s gorgeous.
sad thing is boys to much red tape to do so
100% agree!
I thought exactly the same thing. I was amazed with bouts of sadness watching this. When you imagine what an absolute gem (and it still is) it would have been in its time. Utterly tragic it’s been left like this….it’s on my bucket list
Merry Christmas
@@ericsmith6354 Merry Christmas hope you had a great day
This is hauntingly beautiful. There's something quite magical about her as if you expect to see the fae peeking out.
Th Dunalastir Castle, from the time it was sold in 1853 by the Clan Donnachaidh Chief George Duncan Robertson to General Sir John Macdonald of Dalcchodnie. Not sure why Macdonald decided to demolish it around 1859, and built the present structure we see now, for it was a gorgeous before the change.. I wonder if the main entrance still bears the Macdonald Clan Crest and it's slogan, "Per Mare Per Terras" Which reads, "By Sea and by Land."
I did enjoy Alec and thank you, again Merry Christmas to you and your family, as well as to your exploring crew and their families.🍁
Thanks for taking the Time to tell of History of this amazing place .
... Thus explaining the bow of a ship designed into the architecture.
Wow thanks for that info
With all of the billionaires out there, you would thing one of them would step up and save an important structure like this, instead of them trying to control the governments of the world via death and destruction. The exterior shell is in quite good condition, and that would have been the hardest part of the restoration. The interior spaces would be the easiest to replicate with adequate financial backing. Sadly, the condition of this place epitomizes the state of the entire world at the present time. Nice video...thanks.
It would cost a bomb things like wood rot and plants destabilising the foundation, water, have damaged it so it's not safe. Exposed to the elements have damaged it, it's beyond repair. Not to mention they would never get their money back. People don't just give money to do up buildings they expect a return. Maintenance need to be paid for staff to go out there and keto an eye on it. It's just not worth it. Just enjoy it for what it is.
If a property is intact and does not have dry rot and not too much modernising then they can be saved turn into a hotel, wedding venue if they are economically viable and located in an easy to access area. With local amenities.
These old buildings take millions to be maintained never mind the staff and supplies etc.
@@TheAnonyy This project would be a minor endeavor for the billionaire one percent that control the tech industry.
@@curtisducati Plenty of tech giants out there that have that much money and more, to preserve the architectural treasures of the world.
How terribly sad to see such a beautiful structure fall to ruins. Just a travesty. I can only imagine how grand this place was in its prime. Great watching you guys.
Yes it is I only know of one castle that has Bern maintained for 800 years by the same family and its in Germany.
I remember going to this castle in the early 70s it still had tapestries on the walls and furniture etc inside. Huge copper pans hanging up it was magnificent. I was taken to see it by Ronnie Robinson, we also went back late at night and it was very frightening. So sad to see it like this.
Wow that is quick decay!! What a tragedy!!
@@allymayful One of the reasons it deteriorated quickly is that thieves stole lead caulking from the roof which allowed the elements in.
@@wscaff Roof is a building's achilles heel........the fact folks don't care to leave roofs alone or keep them up is incredibly sad because in all reality it is almost always worth it.
@@stephjezo6470 Money, that's it. Many like this house are torn down because no one can afford the staff to run it, nor the upkeep. This place is privately owned and I hate that You Tube encourages trespass for click bait.
Love the Christmas jumpers, it looks very dramatic in the mist. Don't know why I've just ducked when the gro pro went through the fence lol. Merry Christmas to you all 🎍x
It was never a castle. It has always been known as Dunalastair House and is Victorian. I have a picture of it from when it was still the Laird's House. Very impressive. It was also used to house Polish refugees after WW2. It has been abandoned since 1952. The present owner is Ian Cameron de Sales La Terrière who lives nearby on the Dunalastair Estate. It might have been polite to ask permission before ignoring the "keep out" signs and learning the history.
Don't you wish they would restore this wonderful place? This is part of Scotland's history :( love yall's accents!
Yes that would be amazing if they did
Wow could you imagine how this place must have looked back in the day.
Yeah!.. just a magical Happy place.
Yes I know how it looked when completely intact. Been through it many times in the 1960's and 1970's before the vandalism started. Even had some of the furniture still there including a piano. Was an amazing building along with the laundry which is just up from it but now a holiday house. They passed the old stable block as they walked up the drive.
It's impressive now. The government should take over this castle and designate it historic and protect it. They could pay for that with tours money.
How is it that no one loved this , no one tried to save it ? It's so amazing !
What a beautiful place!! The history this castle must have! Not to mention an archaeologist dream!
I can just imaging Robert the Bruce or William Wallace or some Scottish knights or clansmen trudging thru that foggy area…classic Scotland … man you are so lucky to be in Scotland…the history is simply amazing. Thank you for this.. absolutely stunning
After finally coming out of the bog: FREEEEEEDOMMM!!!
I loved seeing Dunalastair castle. My family are Robertson's and it's a shame the castle is in ruins. Thanks for the video. I'll be coming to see for myself one day. Merry Christmas.
Nice to keep up with your ancesters.
oh Titch, her real name is Denice Gregory , we are also descended from welsh royalty , as is obvious if you are Tudor descent , believe me not boasting , many scottish people do have royal descent after all small nation , telling you this coz i know i have Cohen relations so ... its likely you have all this too
I just discovered your channel and would love that you say a few things about the place your exploring. But then again as much as I love your Scottish brogue I really didn't understand a word you said except " don't get your bollocks caught on the barbed wire" 😨. For some reason Scotland looks like home to me 🥰.
Aw, thanks guys! It’s a beautiful castle! Sad it’s gone to ruin! Too cold for bare legs, never do that in Canada in December!
I'll be interested to look up the history of the castle. What a restoration project it would be for someone with the money! I'd rather have that castle in top notch condition than super yaughts and jets.
What an amazing castle. I can almost hear my ancestors speaking. Thank you for the walkthrough.
Thank you from a US member of Clan Ranald for sharing this haunting view of days gone by.
Such a beautiful area round there, one of my favourite places in the world. First time I saw this house was from the other side of the valley, by Macgregor’s cave. From that distance you can’t tell it’s falling apart, it was only when I got home and zoomed in on a photo that I could see. I’ve seen pictures of it when it was in use and it’s amazing. Great video fellas 👍
Thanks
What an absolute treat to see you three all cheery and in the Christmas spirit ❤️. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 xx
A very merry Christmas.To you Chrissy . and a 🤍 felt Huge!..Hug X

I would risk it for two biscuits better still a whole packet of shortbreads.😂
I'm enjoying this I love history and I wouldn't be able to see all these places without your input. Thank you for sharing. X
Surely there is someone watching this video that knows a person with deep, deep pockets to restore this one of a kind unique historical castle. This is heart breaking to see history being lost to the elements. You should have wore heavier clothing. It looked very cold.
From Texas, all I can say is wow! First time I have seen your channel. Where I live is all flat plains, an occasional tree, very dry. I was so taken by the beautiful countryside. The castle was amazing. As I watched I thought wouldn't it be great if there were still shots, and lo and behold! Beautiful stillshots! You should make a calendar with those photos. Thank you so much for showing this! And I loved your Christmas gear! I hope your Christmas was truly merry and here's to a great new year! New subsciber!
@@osakarose5612 ......
I live in the Texas Panhabdle and we actually have trees , elms and mesquite trees, cottonwood. But yes quite a bit of this area is dry and desert like.
Just love the way the castle sits in the fog just beautiful shots at the end.
That would have been magnificent in its day - thanks for showing us guys!
MERRY CHRISTMAS ALEC AND FRIENDS.🌲🍁🎁

Thanks guys! Beautiful place and beautiful photography to capture history! Loved the sweaters.
The castle was amazing! The stonework, stunning! I love castles! The stills and drone footage were beautiful! Your outfits made my day! Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year!
Great to see unseen parts of Scotland keep up the good work
The drone shot, the pics, absolutely stunning 😍
Absolutely what I needed to watch.
Love you three making the whole experience special for viewers.
Thank you for doing this.
That is unreal! I so wish that we had such majestic echoes of our antiquity, here in the United States!
Thank you, boys for bringing us along!!
Alex what a humorous sweater especially with the flash of lights going off and on .
Magnificent castle 🏰 they must have had hundreds of people working in that castle as you can imagine.
Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas...and thank you for taking us to many of the unusual places over the years.
the boys are impressive ...the castle is hauntingly beautiful👼
WOW!!! U!!! 3 Are Brave Hearts to Visit History. Amazing! An a Amazing Building!
Absolutely stunning. Love foggy weather.
It’s a shame someone doesn’t try to save that beautiful piece of history!
When the roofs gone it's gone .
Sad but that's unsavailable , not economically viable . If it was in the south of England it would be doable because it would be worth 20 million. But up there it dousnt have the potential value to cover the rebuild .
Brilliant guys, good to see Steven dressed up like a old Scottish biscuit tin 🎄🎅🎉
haha cheers Jim
Hope you had a great Christmas Jim
@@adventureswithsteve2981 I had a nice quiet one Steven thanks 👍🎄
Thank you Alec, great wee video. I enjoy a wander round ruined places, this was beautiful in its day, even though it's not the original place ( l believe) Lovely silent drone work round the building, especially the tower, and smashing photos. Loved your festive outfits 😊 hope you guys had a good Christmas, Alioban x
Absolutely beautiful drive and country side😍
I was reading a bit about the history of this castle. It is a sad story as much of Scottish history is. Powerful people taking away what others have.
During the 1960s and 70s people started stealing the metal that was on the roof, which, of course, made the roof eventually collapse. Once the roof starts leaking that is the end of any building. Rain starts seeping in and ruins everything. The modern world has not preserved much of the history of places like this. Sad.
I guess the guy that now owns the land and building does not want to have the land cut up and sold as individual lots and buildings. He also wants the building restored rather than turned into a hotel. I doubt that anyone has that has that kind of money is going to do that.
I'm legitimately, on paper related to the Kings of France and England and I hate it. My most recent ancestor immigrated from Scotland and the family was there forever. I am looking so hard past 1400. There is some Nobility there so I hope it opens up.
I'm a direct descendant of Longshanks by parental lineage. I hope one of my ancestors on the other side did something to someone.
@@haleydoe2279 why hate your ancestors? You can't control what they did and France and Scotland had the auld alliance. I'm Scottish I'd never be ashamed what a member of my family did 6/7 hundred years ago.
What a shame : this place deserved to be fully rebuilt and restored to its former glory !!!!
Really enjoyed the tour as this is an area of Scotland I've yet to see. I've missed Scotland, the humor (during covid19) and very much enjoyed your festive attire although it must've been very chilly for you all. Thanks so much for sharing I look forward to watching more adventures and have Subscribed! From Jules - Maine 🇺🇲
Thanks its appreciated
What an amazing building and for me the perfect weather for some spooky looking photos I've been watching you guys for awhile now and I think I would like to offer some guidance, Have you thought of researching the places you go to give us, the viewers, an insight to the history of the buildings, I for one would love to hear who lived there, when was it built, when and why did people leave, if the grounds belonged to royalty etc. I know the viewers could look it up but I think it would be nice to have the history and see the place at the same time, just a thought guys. Happy New Year to you all. 😊😊
That was a large investment for the time. Love the tour, but would love to see it all rebuilt.
HO HO HO, who wouldn’t go? Beautiful castle and an interesting journey. Looks like you’re in search for the Holy Grail!!! It does look cold out. Wow!!! I’m glad you had a sweater on!!! Thanks for sharing!! : )))
Alec! Thank you for a wonderful video. The castle itself was the least of the attractions. Watching three bonny bairns (I'm older than I want to be) walking along a lovely lane in one of the most beautiful countries in the world was a Christmas treat to remember. Watching the scenery almost hurt with longing. Your jersey was most amusing but I'm afraid my heart was stolen by Steven in his kilt. A belated Happy Christmas to you all and a very happy and prosperous New Year. (I know how to say it in Galic, but I don't know how to spell it. 😂).
Bliadhna Mhath Ur...cheers😁✨
It's truly beautiful! makes you wish we had a touch of magic to restore these places in a snap!

Thank you! This may be the closest I get to Scotland, having only visited once about 6 years ago. Thanks again 🙏🏽
I enjoyed seeing the castle. I am sure it was glorious back in the day. My favorite parts were the drone views and your spectacular shots at the end. Absolutely loved them. Thank you for sharing!
I love the Christmas clothing attire folks, like your socks Alec.. cute.💕
Oh! We even have a kilt, nicely done.
Love the colors.
I don’t know quite why you have chosen to describe Dunalastair House as a castle. A word of warning to anyone foolhardy enough to venture within its walls. Please be aware that the structure is exceedingly unstable. Using a drone to explore it is probably the most sensible and safe option. I speak as someone who once lived in Rannoch, knows the site well and has many friends living close by.
Cheers 🌹from Ontario, Canada 🍁.
You all look smashing in your Christmas sweaters!

what a shame...hope it is protected xo happy new year to all x
such a beautiful place destroyed, what a pity! Thank you for this beautiful video, I was there with you🙂
Oh dear so sad to see how it has declined over the years, another clan castle in ruins. I always liked the
look of Dunkeld Railway Station which was designed by the same architect (Andrew Heiton).
Rght off the top, your explore in your Christmas togs were great. I'm glad the fellow in the Christmas tartan kilt chose not to lever himself over the fence. Is it true that property owners would burn/destroy the roofs of these legacy properties in order not to pay taxes on them? If so, it's a shame on Scottish heritage - have they not learned from English retribution after Culloden? With imagination, you can envision lairds and mistress, along with sculliey maids hastening through those hallways and bring this place back to life. Have you any idea of the age of this castle or the family's heritage who owned it. I enjoy your channel and wish I could accompany you on your explores.
The cottage that is part of Dunalastair estate on the corner of the private road (leading to the castle) and B846 is where I would spend many holidays in the '90s. My grandad rented it for decades and knew the people who ran The Old Laundry cottages. The castle was a common place to visit on our walks. Beautiful place, though there used to be a lot more forest around there, especially at the back of the cottage, but the redwood was cut down for timber.
You guys are so entertaining!! Love the outfits too!! Such a beautiful country side it’s almost haunting. This castles is masterpiece would be stunning in its glory days!! New subscriber!! ❤
The second I saw a plump man in a kilt I knew that it was going to be a easy place to get in to and I am considering visiting

This is AWESOME! Very interesting after discovering I had two clans in my family tree! My 10th Great grandfather was Sir James Lockhart, 10th lord of Lee, 1st lord of Carstairs. His daughter Margaret Lockhart married John Carruthers, 9th Laird of Holmains. They resided further south of this location. Sir Lockhart, 10th lord of Lee resided @ Castle Lee.

Fog,ruins of an old castle made for a great explore. 👍 wishing you, your family and all your exploring friends a very Merry Christmas. 🙂
Loved the outfits. Lol
It breaks my heart when I see one beyond repair.
As a builder I'm allways like keep the roof watertight and they last forever .
One leak and it's game over in a year . So sad .
The further you go up north or into Wales , Scotland the more of these there are . If this was in the south of England it could be restored as it's finished value would cover the rebuild. But up north . No you gonna spend 8 mill to have a 2 mill house 🤷
The two different kinds of stone are lovely. Must have been gorgeous in its day 😔
Throughly enjoyable! Thank you boys for enduring the fog. The result is well worth the effort!
I traced my family line back to this castle. It's an amazing bit of architecture!
Merry Christmas Alec. This was a fascinating explore. This is a lovely old castle. It’s a shame that it has fallen into ruin. It’s been stunning in its day. There must be an interesting history to this place.I love old castles, whether they are ruined or not.
Perfect timing......approaching through the mysterious fog down a lonely road......great build up.....was more fun than decaying castle.
Amazing place, I love old buildings. Shame to see it rot and taken over by nature. Love the stonework, turrets and stone detailing. Could just picture me, dealing with the trees inside, consolidating the walls and rebuilding. New floor/ roof beams. Be a labour of love. Would live in the tower! Can I buy it? The waterfall was lovely.
Absolutely ace! Loved this video thank you for posting 😊
