- The Greenland Dog is one of the rarest and hardiest dogs on planet earth having crossed over The Baring Strait with the settlers to Greenland. Genetically identical to the Canadian Eskimo dog, these dogs are now considered to be the same breed. They are so rare now, due to the modern use of snow mobiles and popularity of other sled dogs - people are fighting hard to save these hardy, beautiful and affectionate dogs.

Love the Greenlander. Grew up with them, saw so many personalities. The grumpy geezer, the joker, the bundle of sunshine, the workaholic, I absolutely love this breed.
I know exactly what you mean. We have one that won't sleep in his house, no matter how bad the weather is, one that will always watch you do things and one that jumps up the walls, when she sees you coming around with the harness
@@charlykatbat4468 One drove my mom mad. She heard him barking, she went out saw his water bowl was empty. She filled it using a can while the dog watched like he was bored. When the bowl was filled, he put a paw on the edge of the bowl, flipping it over, corners of his mouth reached his ears in this massive grin, before barking for more water. Same dog went lazily up in front of my sister's car so she couldn't move. She got out to move the dog but as she got out, the dog lazily moved out of the way. She got back into the car, he went back to block the car. Same silly grin. 4-5 times he did that. Never before did I see a dog with a sense of wicked humour.
I received my name, Bjorn, after my Dad’s Greenland Dog. I was told that he had once saved a kid from drowning by jumping into the water and pulling the kid back in to shore but always thought it was a tall tale;however, when my adult nephew came to visit me from Norway (where I had lived as a toddler), he told me to say hello from his boss who claimed to be that kid who was saved by Bjorn, my Dad’s Greenland Dog. I was dumbfounded.
My father had a pack of 12 Greenlandic sleddogs when I was a child, and after that we allways had one or two, when we lived in Sisimiut, Greenland. Qimmeq -> Dog.

I had one Greenlandic dog when I lived I Aasiaat, what a dog ❤😊
Our family adopted a Canadian Eskimo Dog from my sister's friend when we were just out of high school and still living at home in the country. We took our Mandy to a vet who was familiar with this breed. They are outside dogs and love frigid temperatures and heavy snow. My father built her a customized dog house. She would become overheated within one hour of being inside our house, to share holidays and special occasions. We lived in Upstate New York on Lake Ontario, across from Canada.
We had a few months of warmer weather , other than our almost six plus months of snow and freezing weather. She actually swam in the lake frequently, during warmer months and she would also go underneath our cold water shower to keep cool in warmer weather. She had enormous exercise needs which we all had to help her meet. She would take off " exploring" every once in a while. We lived out in the country with several acres, along with woods, and farmland owned by our neighbors , who were farmers. They all knew her and they would play with her, when she visited. The town police would also play with her on many occasions. This was during the 1970s and 1980s, when everyone knew each other in the country, .and looked out for each another.Our Canadian Eskimo Dog would love to jump high and do flips. It was something to behold a large dog doing this. She could actually leap like a deer on occasions. She lived 16 years and she was very active until the last week of her life, when she became incredibly ill. - All of a sudden, Mandy started running a fever, and was paralyzed from the chest down. She wasn't getting better with aspirin and other measures. Mandy's veterinarian found a tumor when he palpated her abdomen. He felt that it was also linked to her paralysis and fever. He made the decision to euthanize our Mandy, as my sister held Mandy in her arms, while sitting down.. My father buried Mancy on our land, where she loved to roam.
You are correct.about taking off , but always returning home. She would go out exploring new adventures and making new friends, for miles, but she would always return home. Our Mandy loved attention.

These dogs were such a joy to witness. My favorite kind of dog-just how they barrelled in and tackled Anneka with hugs and kisses when she met them. Such so friendly and open hearted and sweet! Love them. It was really hilarious how they wouldn't stop with the affection and play and rough-housing with Anneka on the couch-crazy in a good way! I would love one. Or 2. :)
It is so enjoyable to watch the two vying for just a bit more of the scratching and affection. The important thing in owning dogs, is to have a good vacuum sweeper to use before you get company. We have an English Shepherd and a “Toller” that put on a show like these whenever anyone stops by. Having two dogs together is way more than twice the fun.

They are nothing like labradors. Greenland dogs are work animals, not pets and not family dogs.

I've had Greenlanders for the past 5 years and I can say they're amazing animals. A bit stubborn sometimes, especially of something is 100 times more interesting than what the humans say, but they're super sweet and if you're part of the pack, you know it and feel it every day.

First dog we ever had was a Greenlender dog. The best dog in my opinion, head strong! But what a chill and caring dog towards us kids. Her name was Siwa. (Early 70s)

I had a beloved Shollie. He looked just like a miniature German Shepherd Dog. His name was Patton. He only weighed about 45 lbs.

It's grest how you can tell subtle differences between the Greenland and the Inuit dogs despite being genetically the same breed: greenland dogs have a lot of solid-colored and black and tans, while Inuits are usually some variation of sable or wolf grey and often have husky-like white markings

Love your channel! I know you do a lot of episodes and that it must be costly but could you please make an episode about Croatian Shepherds or just an informative one talking about them so that word gets out to the world of all dog lovers that there is such breed of dog. Not many people know about this amazing dog breed internationaly, but any person that owned one knows that they are extremely smart,brave and loyal with a lot of stories of them coming back to their owners swimming over bordering rivers (case in family that happened to my granddad) after being given away hundreds of kilometers from home, they are like shadows and very brave and obedient.
If you ever need any info about them or personal experiences I'm willing to write you an email with such info

Such remarkable temperaments, for such huge and powerful dogs. I've always admired and wanted a wolf, but obviously not being able to have one as a pet, I got an Alaskan Malamute, currently 7 months old. Remarkable temperament too. I'd never heard of a Greenland dog before.
They are anazing dogs, but they are not suitable as pets. They are work dogs. They are also dangerous to game and other dogs. The are only halfway domesticated.
