I have a 2017 CX-9, I use the exact same oil, I had it tested from Blackstone laboratory's and the report was outstanding for that Mobil 1 high mileage 5W30, I am running 10k oil change intervals with changing filter every 5 K. 122,000 miles on vehicle !

One thing for sure Mazda wants to be a real competitor in the Auto industry and there in it to win it, so having said that, I bet reliability will be one of the best out there ! I am so impressed on how well there 4 cylinder turbo engine is designed and built, Never owned a Mazda in my whole life, Now I have 3 of them since 2017 ! CX-9 , M3 , RF Miata, I have been a Mechanic /Technician 30 + years, There products are very well engineered once they separated from Ford, One thing I would like to see on new Mazda's are more coats of paint in areas prone to rock chips . @@Auto-Minute
I always change the filter first. Less chance of 'splash' if you drop the filter into drain pan. I go oversize on the filter I use Fram xg7317. Fits and works fine. I also fill the filter with oil as it's mounted vertical.
Synthetic oil does last much longer than conventional, but I'm babying the car and trying to prolong the life of the turbo the best I can :D I also admit that I performed this oil change a tad bit early in this video lol
@@Auto-Minute In Australia, our service intervals are 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles). I'm sure the synthetics we use are good for twce that but need to stick to Mazda recommendations to maintain warranty. Great video BTW.

@@ronengold8475 putting a block/wedge underneath the back tire (or the tire NOT on the ramp) so if the emergency brake fails you don't run yourself over and have a bad day. Quick step to make sure you don't end up dead.
Hey brother, shouldn't be a problem. I haven't personally seen that bolt on a CX5, but I have seen the hex bolts used on different vehicles. This stuff should be standard, but nothing wrong with the bolt as long as it's the right specification. Just remember to NOT over tighten the bolt when plugging it back.
@@Auto-Minute yeah but in the off chance you go a little hard up those ramps and drive into/through the garage door, getting your jack out of the garage and then getting the ramps out from under the car is just problems I try to avoid. Working on a car is already troublesome enough haha

@@Auto-Minute lol....i see an update video in your future....lol....and since it has been a few years (i'm sure many oil changes) how are the bolts & plastic plug/clips holding up on the cover....are the plastic plug/clips expensive or the dealer hand then out like candy?
@@morkmckerr lol "doing an oil change in 2024" that's good. Everything's been holding up great. I even did a cross country trip and some light trails, zero issues. I've got a gazillion of those plastic push tabs though, but that's because of my Miata 😅
It really does not take long to change the oil in the CX-5. Additionally, you know that drain plug was torqued to spec and not just thrown back in a tightened too much or too little.
@@Auto-Minute I hear you on that! Also, overtightening tends to round the flat spots of drain plug. They also tend to use power tools to save time. Another no, no when it comes to torque specs.
Don't put the cover back until after you run it to make sure there are no leaks on the filter.

You should be using a single hex socket only. 12 point sockets are for hacks

@@DrBo1 The 7317 is a bit longer/taller. If there is room for it, try it one time. Better flow, better filtration, costs the same.

How do you know the oil bypass setting is correct for the 2.5L engine?

Yes it does! But it’s not the oil you need to worry about- its the filter.

I'm trying this right now. That oil filter will not come off by hand. Or with the filter wrench I have. Will have to go get one of those pliers.
The filter came off SO easy with those pliers. Also, for lack of a 17mm, an 11/16 socket worked fine.

I assume this is a turbo since the oil filter is the turbo one and you’re using 5W-30.

Im so confused was to why my drain bolt is the kind that needs a hex tool. Every video I watch on here shows the standard 17MM.
Hey brother, shouldn't be a problem. I haven't personally seen that bolt on a CX5, but I have seen the hex bolts used on different vehicles. This stuff should be standard, but nothing wrong with the bolt as long as it's the right specification. Just remember to NOT over tighten the bolt when plugging it back.

I'd recommend not mounting ramps while the garage door is closed right in front of them.
I leave the garage door open while working on the car.
