Mary "talking poorly about Tom due to him being the chauffer " me "oh Mary, watch your mouth. He'll become your brother in the future, and you favorite family member"
Mary is a caring person under a tough, prickly facade. She loves dearly and wholly, even with people of lower class to her such as Mrs Hughes, Anna and Carson. She was also the first out of the family to warm to Tom. Edith, on the other hand I can't get over her entitlement and that time she cared more about her dress when Carson was having an actual heart attack.
Very true about her respect towards the servants, especially Anna. She inmediately threw herself in, lied to her parents and paid for Anna's surgery in London so she could keep her baby and then she made sure that Anna wasn't doing any heavy duties during the first weeks of her pregnancy. You could see that she didn't show many signs of love or affection in general but she really did have a strong bond with the people around her like Anna or Carson and she even showed unseen compassion towards Thomas when he'd tried to kill himself, even though he wasn't exactly in any interactions with her before, he was just a member of staff. They supported her through thick and thin, protected her and she never forgot these moments.

When Mary cares about the servants and apologizes to them, I know she is a treasure. And Matthew brings the best out of her 😭 comparing to other times she's angelic in season 2
I feel like Edith winds Mary up and then when Mary bites Edith acts really hard done to. Not saying what Mary does is okay tho! I also get the feeling when Mary goes too far she regrets it the second she hears the words come out of her mouth. Almost like her defence reflex is to be mean.

When Bertie and Edith’s relationship almost fell apart (partly) because of Mary everyone was mad at her, but when Edith sent that letter about Pamuk’s death, which could literally have given Downton a terrible reputation everyone was just like: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ poor little Edith… not to justify Mary’s behaviour, but Edith was just as terrible. Edith is incapable to have empathy for the lower class and Mary even in her snobby way , she really love, care and affectionate with her “servant “ even if she was told and teach all her life that they are inferior… Edith will never rich the same sensibility. I really don’t know why people like her the only good thing in her it’s her husband.
I'm surprised at how many people like the bitchy side of Mary. I adored the wittiness and snark of granny, because she always knew when was the right moment for it, but Mary was often unnecessarily rude, unapologetic and just simply mean. I never could fully warm up to her character, even though I appreciated the writing and having such character in the Downton did shake the things up.
I honestly love her so much shes so catty lmao it's not hard for her to make people uncomfortable and I find it hilarious But I have to admit, out of everything, when she outed Edith about being Marigold's mother, I lost my temper a little bit.
@@kristelpi652 it's very in character of her to do that tho. she does hate edith. and edith did out her on the dead man in her room. an eye for an eye. i personally like the ending very much
@@peachbooks3199 well the writers actually thought it wasn’t when they wrote it, but went ahead with it because they thought it made for very good television. The whole ‘mary was secretly jealous of edith this whole time’ doesn’t make sense to me. You can have two female characters win a happy ending without bringing the other down, or writing a fantasy about the more confident one having a ‘satisfying’ fall from grace.
@@kristelpi652 i think sibling jealousy makes sense. when you're the older/firstborn, another baby coming into the world when you were the only darling can breed jealousy. this is a normal dynamic between siblings. while not every writing gotta be that way, imo it works. mary had quite a character development bcs she was snobbish about her being outranked. she's now embracing the new, more equal world like everybody else, still the strong and cool mary bcs her title doesn't define her. i think it's a win-win for both sisters
She saved the long term fall out there would have been had the man discovered it later on it would have been catastrophic for Edith. Mary told the man out of love for Edith and her future and the future of her niece. It’s called tough love and tough love is what Mary does best... it is also what we are lacking in the world today!
The whole story was about Mary. But Edith was the luckiest girl. Mary got married to a used car trader. Edith got married to to a wealthy prominent man from high class family. But, Mary is still my favourite character.
I wonder how happy Edith was. In the movie she looked bored and annoyed by her life. I am not blaming her. Beeing an independent woman with her own magazine and then give it up for boring charity lunches... Not my kind of life.
To be honest, I would chose Mary's life. She ended up better. Money is not everything, plus she had money, Edith had little before getting married. And Edith lost her independence, the only quality I appreciated about her.
Bertie, upper class twit that he was, loved Edith despite her 'past' but really didn't have a clue how to treat a wife. The toffs were brought up without much in the way of insight or scope, so could behave very superficially. Mary on the other hand, having already had a 'working class' husband, would be very happy indeed with her race car driver.
Can I just say, fantastic video! Well edited, good music (not too loud), hilarious annotations and perfectly relevant content. I'm here for it! Love Mary's character, always made me laugh! :D Keep up the great videos! Well done!
As petty as it was and very much a selfish thing to do simply because she didn't want to be of a lower rank to Edith, Mary calling her out for not telling Bertie about Marigold was VERY much karma for what Edith tried to pull in the first season when she outed Mary for sleeping with Pamuk. Edith was so ready to ruin Mary's life and Mary, eventually, reciprocated in kind. I had a feeling that something like that wouldn't be forgotten by Mary, which is probably another reason as to why she so easily did that to Edith.
Plus I don't think she would've wanted her brother-in-law to live in a complete lie. She was confrontational and cold sometimes but she was probably the most dignified, regal character on the show. Like when even though she was completely in love with Matthew, she accepted his choice and she was nothing but respectful and supportive towards Lavinia who was gonna take the man she'd loved. She knew where the lines were and never crossed them.
@@fanni24 Mary understands, as Edith doesn’t, that things like Pamuk and Marigold have implications beyond individuals. Edith not telling Bertie about her illegitimate daughter left her wide open to scandal and possibly blackmail. I don’t believe she would have told him if Mary hadn’t forced her hand. Edith is a coward.
@@StargazerNorth1 Mary was so many times unnecessarily cruel to Edith, her little ironic and arrogant comments were so painful. If somebody says that Edith deserves it because of revealing Pamuk's story, well Mary already punished Edith when she discouraged sir Anthony to marry her. After that, they should restart their relationship, But Mary remained as bitchy as she was before. Towards others she shows dignity and kindness but not for her own sister. Even in the beginning of the show before Edith wrote to ambassador, it was very clear Mary looks down to her sister and Edith doesn't get same attention from her parents. Even lord Grantham admits it when tells to Cora: "poor Edith, we never talk about her". It's exactly his words, and so many times Mary said something very nasty about Edith in front of everyone and I don't remember parents defending Edith who was their child too. First of all parents are to blame of it.
One of the most important points to consider when we evaluate a work of fiction, is to first determine the caliber of it. Stories the likes of Downton Abbey belong with the great work of literature of these past two centuries. This is why it was never intended to be treated like a popular show people take simplistically. It got popular worldwide and within a variety of different audiences because of it's perfection as a work of television, but sadly this led to it being oversimplified/ vulgarized by audiences who do not get in what scale it belongs. I can see this in comments that just do not get the writing and the whole intent and purpose of the writer, treating it like a reality tv show destined to be consumed without a second thought. The whole Mary/ Edith dynamic is a very well written one. It's about two very different people living under the same roof. They are both horrid to each other, just in different ways. Edith was sneaky while Mary was straightforward and confrontational, and I see that this part of her really does trigger some people who start to take it personally making Edith a saint, if you think Edith was a saint then I truly worry about the people in your life how you've been treating them. What's compelling about those two, is that their story is about a dynamic that is rarely talked about, it's the difference between self-aware women (people) and non self-aware ones, it's about your philosophy in life, are you the type to take control over your life or are you the type who goes with the flow and somehow manages to come out as the martyr. Being a middle child myself and an eldest daughter, I do relate to both of them depending the scenes, but I relate far more to Mary, she is the part I'd prefer to be, while Edith is the part I prefer not to be, she's the part I'd prefer to grow past and move on from, which I did to a certain extent.
Well said. I honestly love both characters because of their complexities, but they were both equally horrid to each other. It's funny that when I read comments, more often than not Mary fans are just as self aware as her. Meanwhile, Edith fans paint her as a victim who's only wrong was to stand up for herself, which is far from the truth and very much like how Edith sees herself. Quite ironic really.
Completely agree with your interpretation but it is necessary to take into account the psychological dynamic between the parents too. Not to forget the sociological background, decline of the Eupopean nobility and rising of other classes and groups. Lady Mary is clearly a narcissistic personality. Lady Edith a covert one.
Well said! Both sisters had flaws but while Mary was strong and worked for the things she wanted, Edith was not fighting for anything, as you said, she just went with the flow. She got lucky a few times like when her married lover left her his London flat and magazine in his will or when she got engaged to Bertie who was willing to put up a fight with his mother and convince her to accept Edith and her illegitimate child. She wouldn't have fought those battles herself, she would've probably accepted defeat, went back to her parents' home and sunk in her own self-pity and bitterness. Usually these were the times when she was the most careless and cruel towards her own family.
it's been a while since i saw that season, but honestly i feel like mary did edith a favor. if that guy couldn't accept edith with her past, then she didin't deserve her. good riddance!
I've always thought so too, especially that there was a child involved that she most probably intented to take with her if she married him. Edith would have exposed herself and her family to scandal if she waited some more time before telling him. Plus, Edith provoked the bad feeling in that scene, she kept putting her down for her failed relationship and insisting to make her seem like she was rejected even though she wasn't as they actually broke up because of Mary's trauma regarding cars and the death of Matthew. Edith was being unsensitive and she got the burn, like always.
@@AnelimMCO lol no. It wasn’t Mary’s place to tell him at all and if you lot think Mary did that out of the kindness of her heart, you’re all delusional.
@@Teddy-iv2sc I agree. I don't believe Mary should've told him at all, and she definitely didn't intend on helping Edith come clear, as it's pretty obvious. But, going with the original comment, she ended up telling about Marigold and it kinda turned out ok in the end. What I meant in my first comment is that IF Mary was actually helping, she shouldn't have said it like that. Now I see I was not clear at all lol
@@Teddy-iv2sc no although bertie should have been told, the writers intended mary to be horrible in that scene. Logically you can interpret it different ways, but there is no doubt they butchered mary’s character in the end to give edith the climax happy ending she deserved. The writers said so themselves.
Mary revealing Edith’s secret about Marigold to Bertie I’d say is as bad as that time Edith basically went public with Mary’s Pamuk scandal. That being said, not sure why everyone criticizes Mary about this moment. Yes, Mary is a bully, but Edith couldn’t possibly think Mary would let that slide without a satisfying vengeance?
@@aiwu9247 at that time they both were teenagers. Let's remember Mary got her revenge by telling Lord Anthony stuff that Edith didn't even say. So they now are even . Also Mary and Edith are now grown women. Mary's a mother with a kid . you can't hold something done over years ago to which you already had your revenge . I get when your a teenager if you do it it's not right but it's understandable but to behave like that now is just immature.
You must have missed the fact that Edith has NO IDEA that Mary knew at this point. Nobody told Mary, she eventually guessed it. Why would Edith think that Mary knew? Added to that, Mary's Pamuk thing didn't come up again after she married Matthew. There's no indication that Carlisle told anyone and Mary got a marriage in good social standing and birthed the heir of Downton Abbey. Why would Edith, or anyone, think that Mary still cares about it? Furthermore, all Edith did was point out that Mary can't bear it when things go better for Edith than for herself. And that's just the truth. It's a little snide perhaps and Mary had a right to say something equally mean. But what she did was not "equally mean", it was attempting to actively destroy Edith's reputation and her chance to marry (again, one might add - she did that at the end of season 1 too), especially her chance to marry someone of a higher social standing than anyone in their own family (Mary is a snob, so that's gotta sting for her) AND someone that she loves. It additionally risked putting the brand of "illegitimate" on little Marigold. if Bertie wasn't a good guy, and Mary had no idea what he's like, then this could have turned Edith and Marigold into social pariahs. It was extremely disproportionate. As was Edith telling the Turkish embassy about Mary and Pamuk, but at least Edith did not do that again and grew as a person. Mary, meanwhile, is still a bitchy teen girl in her fucking 30s. It's pathetic, honestly.

I adore Mary's look in Season 2. You can really see the seeds of the more liberated 1920s being sown, and I think that particular hairstyle really suited her.
Whoever edited this is a genius of comedy
The way Mary HATED Matthew at first but fell so hard in love with him loool
The thing I love about Downton is that all the characters are so special in their personalities and presentation while remaining so relatable. And they cannot be grouped into simple character types. Very inspiring character creation!
“It isn’t that, is the thought of being left behind with you” BLOODY HELL THAT BURNS
Mary "talking poorly about Tom due to him being the chauffer "
me "oh Mary, watch your mouth. He'll become your brother in the future, and you favorite family member"
At least I'm not fishing with no bait. That has to be the most badass thing mary said on the show.
@@fanni24 Yup! So all the Mary Haters out there/Edith Supporters need to remember the facts! Sure Mary was awful to Edith but Edith didn't exactly make herself likeable to anyone and was snobbish.
Dear Lord! Exactly what I keep thinking.... Thank God PPL with sense exist... I mean look at how selfish, entitled and self pitying character Edith is throughout... She is the one always plotting against Mary... Look at how the Drewes suffered emotionally because of her...
@@dreamsteddybearsmaster I feel out of the world reading your thoughts 👏👏👏👏👏
@@dreamsteddybearsmaster exactly! Edith was sometimes just as vile Mary, but somehow a lot of viewers seem to forget it entirely. Because Edith is quite good at playing a victim everyone's picking on, oh poor her. Edith bitched at Mary? Mary said something twice as snappy and coldly blew her off. Mary snapped at Edith? Edith will throw a pity party complete with a wobbly lip and a rant about being an old maid.
Plus, Mary admits to being wrong at least some of the time. Nothing is ever Edith's fault, bitchy relatives and a cruel fate are always to Blake.
I like this moment 2:00-2:04. It was quite rare to see Edith and Mary beinh actual sisters to each other.
Compilation of Anna and Bates having miserable conversations would be fabulous.
Yes goodness they were so dull
I love the banter between Tom and Mary..... He is almost like a buffer in between Mary and Edith. Their brother..
She even called him her brother
@@marionarda2790 yes
When Mary cares about the servants and apologizes to them, I know she is a treasure. And Matthew brings the best out of her 😭 comparing to other times she's angelic in season 2
The music makes this so much better 😭 and the laugh at 2:04 had me HOWLING
ugh her character has so much depth i love her so much
This whole edit and the captions have me rolling😂😂 and Tom’s face each time they’re together 😭😭
To be fair she's often teased by the people around her (Edith and Tom in particular), they know she can clap back but they keep poking her.
I feel like Edith winds Mary up and then when Mary bites Edith acts really hard done to. Not saying what Mary does is okay tho! I also get the feeling when Mary goes too far she regrets it the second she hears the words come out of her mouth. Almost like her defence reflex is to be mean.
What I didn't like about Edith is that she always played the victim. Even when she was not.
@@potocatepetl Exactly! That’s what some people don’t understand about them. I think Mary is better than Edith because Edith keeps wallowing in her misery feeling sorry for herself and playing the victim but Mary knows she’s a bitch and has accepted her role gracefully. She’s self aware, while Edith isn’t and tries to convince everyone and herself that she’s good.
She definitely suffered from the “middle child” syndrome, which made her insufferable
@@Maanemand She suffered of the liar's syndrom and whining syndrom. Mary at least learnt from her mistakes and matured... Edith didn't seem to. And it wasn't Mary's fault for the break-up between Edith and Bertie. It was definitely not her place to tell him about Marigold and not in that setting, but it was Edith's lies that almost ended their relation. Do you think she could have lied about Marigold her entire life? Imagine finding out you were lied to for years... They would have ended up like Rose's parents, hating and resenting each other. Lies always destroy relationships.
@@potocatepetl exactly! And the way Edith is like “you said it because you are unhappy and wanted me to be unhappy too”, uhm no? Edith provoked her in a belittling and unnecessary way in front of others, which naturally made Mary bite back. I can’t believe Edith (and everyone around her) placed the guilt entirely on Mary, while she still played the victim and never acknowledged her own wrongdoings. It’s like Edith’s character never changed through the seasons
Mary in season 2: ugh, Branson is just a chauffeur I hate and have no consideration for him 😒
Mary in season 6: OMG Branson, my brother I love you, you're the best I missed you sm 😍🥰❤💅

After all that roasting by Mary, Edith is of higher status than her whole family by marrying the Marquess.
Yes, but she’s still Edith. Nobody wants to be that drip.
@@StargazerNorth1 OH MY LORD. That fucking burns LMAOOOO
I loved that storyline! Mary's face when she saw his estate ten times the size of her own 🤣. Priceless
Does it really matter though?
I hated Mary😂😂
Because it makes amazing tv. Mary is queeeeen
The true heiress of the Dowager Countess.
The Dowager Countess isn't a disgusting as her!
Genius acting by Michelle Dockery.😃
Most of the time it's not her being bitchy, but her being uncomfortable in her own skin. And some are power moves too.

Some really sharp writing here. Love it!
I honestly love her so much shes so catty lmao it's not hard for her to make people uncomfortable and I find it hilarious
But I have to admit, out of everything, when she outed Edith about being Marigold's mother, I lost my temper a little bit.
The writers butchered her character in the end to give edith a lift. They said so themselves. Oh well
@@kristelpi652 it's very in character of her to do that tho. she does hate edith. and edith did out her on the dead man in her room. an eye for an eye. i personally like the ending very much
@@peachbooks3199 well the writers actually thought it wasn’t when they wrote it, but went ahead with it because they thought it made for very good television.
I'll never get tired of watching this 😂
The whole story was about Mary.
Edith got higher rank coz of marriage… Mary ended up managing Downton Abbey. Mary ended way better… she always was one to take charge unlike Edith
@@Suchanda_C and who's to say that edith has no part in managing the much larger brancaster castle?

I love her character and she plays it perfectly 👏👏👏
“YOU’RE A BITCH!” Lmao go Edith! 😂
My favourite line of Mary's ever, which wasn't actually a bitchy one, was 'I'm going upstairs to take off my hat' So posh!
She's the Regina George of aristocracy lol
Oh God, I love this! All hail Queen Mary!
@@fanni24 I agree with this.
Nah, Mary is just pure evil
She was like the O Brien of upstairs
The editing makes this 1000% funnier XD

I've met quite a few upper class people and even a few minor aristocracy, and they are either dignified and utterly lovely, or just like Mary 😂
This is an awesome and very witty compilation. Just excellent!!!
yes!! please do more Downton Abbey compilations!
If you think that Downton Abby’s caluber isn’t a popular show, then I don’t think you’ve ever seen an actual good show of „a greater caliber” LMAO
Good grief .... your comment is the most pretentious load of waffle I've ever read in a comment section.
This is hilarious!
it's been a while since i saw that season, but honestly i feel like mary did edith a favor. if that guy couldn't accept edith with her past, then she didin't deserve her. good riddance!
I kinda agree, but she could've found a better way to tell him..

Her revenge was not lie to Anthony so he would not propose?
Edith was young and stupid it was a mistake and a long time ago are you still holding a grudge damn
@@anayadegani626of course. That child needed a lesson.
Mary told Violet about surpassing rank of misses Grey, and told her not to be bitter. And then Edith…
I absolutely love Mary, she’s so iconic 👑
Mary's only redeeming feature is like the rest of the family she truely appreciates and cares for the people who work for them.
