- In this lesson I discuss the way I approach the minor II-V. I use Dizzy Gillespie's tune Woody'n You as a vehicle for all of the demonstrations. Topics include thinking of the -7b5 chord a s a minor 6, and the usage of pentatonics and the melodic minor scale. This is an eye opening lesson, the material discussed changed the way I look at minor II-V's! Another must have lesson!

There are lots of jazz inprov nuggets in Barry's Lesson Previews that help facilitate learning when encoding full lessons on site. Great stuff, Barry. Thanks.
Thanks Michael!
What do you mean encoding?
When I learn music (particularly online) I consider my learning process as a personal encoding system requiring multiple passes at content -- to get it into long term and muscle memory. Slow learner.
Tremendous Barry.....you've revealed why my classical training has clashed with my Jazz.I can jump between both now.Cheers.

+tonybegood111 glad to hear it! Thanks
Just great stuff Barry, love you playing and your teaching style.
Amazing! Thanks, Saludos desde Guatemala.

You're the boss. Thanks.
+Filip Dinev thanks:)
I so need this lesson - I really struggle with minor ii-V-i.
Just bought the full lesson from your website - looking forward to learning from you :-)
+Shredder let me know how you make out! Thanks Shredder!
Barry
Thanks Barry - bought the lesson and learnt a lot. You're an amazing player. Already eyeing up my next lesson from you; maybe skype? Do you think you might do a lesson devoted specifically to minor 2-5-1 and Major 2-5-1? That'd be superb and I reckon it'd sell really well too :-)
I will do one on Major II-V's this summer. Wrapping Body and Soul chord melody right now. Thanks!
Barry
With G7 to Cmaj7 I know that the usual resolution is 3rd to root, and 7th to 3rd (B to C, F to E). In C minor, the 3rd is flat Eb, which is shared with the G7 as b13 or #5. Maybe the whole step from F to Eb is typical, or up a semitone from D to Eb? But then the sound is not as "bebop"? Omg! Around every turn the questions are endless 😭 😂 Thanks!
You're overcomplicating things. Just learn language. Donna Lee is a great source for that. -barry
@@BarryGreeneHey Barry, thank you very much! I have sort of feared Donna Lee as being too advanced, but will start (finally) learning it. One cool thing in that tune are the various triplets which I definitely need to start using. It's so easy to stay with 8th notes. Thanks again! I really love your playing and appreciate your videos 😊
Hi Barry, at 2:37 are you playing these lines with a straight or a swing feel? I'm not sure... Maybe it's my untrained ear, but the drums sound like they are playing with a swing feel, but your lines sound more straight. Or are you somewhere in between? Thanks!
Knowing me, somewhere in between:)
Might seem like an odd question, but it seems like you phrase very horn-like runs and even take breaths between them. Is that s conscious thing you do or does it just happen like that?
Killer playing, man.
Thanks Cory, it's just happens like that. I did transcribe a lot of horn players and played with those recordings every day. That must have had something to do with it!
@@BarryGreene Thanks, man! I hope my comment doesn't make you self conscious now, haha. Don't change a thing!
