52 y/o, been traveling down this path for over 4 years, looking at purple. Love the sport, the community, and being able to share it with my son who is also a blue belt. BJJ has changed my life for the better, gives me a great perspective, and ensures that after class I'm one day closer. One day closer is up to you, whether it's a belt, a tap, a roll with your boy, death...my recommendation: Stop talking, start doing.
Great video. I got my purple belt on March 25, 2023. I originally got my blue belt in June 2001 at 21 years old. I unfortunately quit in 2003 only after about 18 months as a Blue Belt. It was a regret every day. Eventually I made it back in January 2020. I dropped 70lbs, had a complete body transformation and eventually had my purple belt break through. What an experience… your video really took me back. I’m now a 43 year old 165lb, 5’5” purple belt that is obsessed with BJJ. I train so much and now I’m an instructor and coach with my own students. What a crazy journey. I’m going to assume that your purple belt has a few stripes these days. Looks like this video was uploaded about 4-5 promotions ago. Thanks for the video.
I needed this. I was on the cusp of my purple belt right before the corona outbreak and didn't train for almost a year. I came back and cats that I was ahead of are purple belts. It kills me knowing that I should be at the point where I should have 2 or at least a minimum of 1 stripe on my purple belt. I have been back for about 3 months now and have finally gotten back into my groove. I know coach will promote me when he feels I am ready and I have had a mild case of the blue belt blues because I am back to the point where I can dominate most of blue belts and go toe to toe with most of the purple belts and even submit some of them. But coach is taking his time. But I am going to push through and whether I get promoted or not will continue to grind. Thanks for the video bro. You have a new subscriber.
Same story as me except most of the people I’ve started with are now black belts. I just got promoted to brown. U know the answer bro. Just keep training!
Most people won’t try BJJ and those that do try it quit within 2 months that’s why it’s not easy but at 14 years of training BJJ myself it’s definitely worth it 💯 normal people are too weak minded to stick with something as hard as BJJ they rather sit on the couch all day eating junk food watching UA-cam and criticize people who are trying to challenge themselves & better themselves 🤙🏻
Who disliked this video? The dislikes of videos like these always perplex me. This is a great video and I’m saving it to share with people who say they’re interested.
Great video 👊🏻. The thought of “ why am I doing this ?” pops up constantly when you start getting discouraged. My gym doesn’t promote often which is a huge mental hurtle to get over. I’ve realized (with great struggle ) not to focus on this anymore. It’ll come when it comes . Enjoy the journey, love the life 🤙🏻
There he is!!! We have similar story. I’m also a purple but I tore my ACL in September 2019. I had my surgery August 2020 now I’m on the mends. Physical therapy is going well. I’m hoping to get back to BJJ in May 2021. I’m fully vaccinated( I’m a physician )for covid so I should be good. Welcome back!!
@@BJiuJitsuTV Thank you. It feels great. It's not too surprising you felt better getting blue belt because it's a huge step up from white belt with the knowledge that you're making continuous progress.
This video is extremely well done... THANK YOU for sharing this great information. I am a white belt and I totally felt what you were saying!!!! #respect
I really want to get back on the mats. Not quite ready yet cause I have five kids. But after a couple years of no gi, I’m ready to start from scratch at fundamentals in gi. I do want to get my blue, but more importantly I want to develop a solid old school fundamental style of bjj.
I always like watching or hearing jiu-jitsu guys describe their journey. I only cross train jiu-jitsu...over the last decade I have just shy of 6 years of training. Different coaches have given me stripes totalling to 11 I believe on my white belts. Since I only cross train..I don't really feel any of nervousness, or many emotions I see others go through....but I can only imagine how many of you feel. I have picked up so much from being on the mats and staying in top physical shape...that I don't really have alot of problems with anyone on the mats....but I really found this to be similar to what I see jiu-jitsu guys go through. I am proud of all my friends....as I have watched many of them get to their black belts.
I always say alot of people will have a different journey. As long as you get a chance to experience jiu jitsu, I say it's worth it. Every now and then I run into the person who doesn't necessarily have a HOME gym and just trains when they can. Not too many. Either way, I'm glad you get to experience the mats! And, thanks for watching!
I just strapped up i got my PURPLE belt...I learned from you how to attack when someone posture up in a TRIANGLE CHOKE...the hand stand trick you do...has got me multiple TAPS
This is a great documentary-style video. Coming up on my first year and have definitely experienced a lot of what you are discussing. Keeping your ego out of the way and having a focus on your goals is what is going to keep you coming back in each day to train. I am now training 4-5 days a week and do it for the fun of the game.
I can relate, I am 45. My club imploded, so I moved to a new gym. Because it was a long commute, I could only make it twice a week. Then the Monday course was changed, so I could only make Sat. Then Sat was cancelled. Then corona happened, and we are still in lockdown. Damn I miss it. There are no close gyms here for me and I am getting older. I did it for 14 months, never earned a stripe, but I didn't care, it made me happy just learning and rolling, getting fit. I spend my days dreaming of taking my family with me to a new city where I can train, but you know, mortgages, work and obligations.
Great video! I loved the references on the way through it! I found this because I was just awarded my purple belt last night and feel exactly how you spoke in this video. Oss!
this is awesome, really enjoy your videos man. I got my purple belt last month, stoked but so much doubt and wondering if i"m "ready". been 6 years myself if it wern't for the injuries. Completely agree, consistency is definitely key. I'd blow my load in the beginning and burn myself out and miss bunch of classes as a white belt so I try and recommend to the newer guys that consistency over quantity is better and will be better in the long run.
I really enjoyed your video- I am a female purple belt who started BJJ when I was about 53. I can relate to all you spoke of in your video. I have been very fortunate to have my first and current coach (first had to move for family reasons/current is his nephew) be very persistent; not let me quit; make me train 5-6 days per week. I am typically the only female in class and usually the oldest. I definitely have my bad days, but I have come so far..I would enjoy seeing another video from you as you progress from Purple belt to a Black belt.
Thanks for the comment. It's good to see/hear about people training at all different ages. And yes, sometimes we all need that extra something to keep us going when we wanna take a "break from jiu jitsu". But I'm glad you were able to relate to some of the things I put in the video. Also, I'll be back to posting on a more regular basis, hopefully soon. And thanks for watching! ✊
@@Nadya2004 Don’t know if your just starting or are many years in - (I’m now a Brown belt, about 1 year away from my black belt, if I am hopefully able to continue training consistently.) No matter, stick with it. (I still often have times when I have to tell myself that too.)
Lol I think I have a pretty unique first day in jiu-jitsu class story. I had been grappling friends my whole life as a kid on some serious backyard whitebelts going at it but none of us knew any proper technique. As an adult I had been talking to friends for years about wanting to join a jiu jitsu class, and then one day I moved into the second story of a house and realize I'm located directly across from the local gym as a bunch of people in gi's showing up to the parking lot made evident. It took me a while to go for it but one day I go in and ask to watch, I stood next to the clock and hit reset when needed while I got a feel for what I'd be paying for. When I show up the next day it turns out they don't have any gi's my size but recommend their gyms gi's over blanks I agree and the instructors son liked that so he offered to drive to his house and get me one of his own freshly cleaned gi's. It didn't take long for him to be back with a gi that was completely covered in patches and his old brown belt that had been faded to look almost grey. It comes to my attention that the main instructor is training for the Worlds Black Belt competition and a few people had MMA fights coming up so we were mostly gonna be focusing on advanced techniques and them while the Black Belt son took over as instructor. During warm ups I got to do a bunch of stuff I felt unsure about like diving somersaults but I survived and the instructor seemed to be saying my name a lot pushing me to go harder and encouraging me if I did. Then came time for some rolls. My first match was against a white belt in his late 40's or early 50's I'd guess but super super strong for his size, I was able to have him in mount for most the time until he escaped and with a lot of adrenaline I managed to follow him and secure back control and a choke similar to when we were kids. In my second match a black belt comes up to me and wants to roll, I'm not one to say no to a good opportunity so I agree and I'll never forget the look of surprise on his face trying to figure out what was going on with my lack of skills while wearing such a decorated gi and worn down brown belt. People I knew from high school came over after and said they were all watching my first roll closely because no one could see who I was + what I was wearing meant a lot to them and it was a pretty good laugh. I ended up moving from that house but not before I got a good month or two of training as many days a week as I could handle. I haven't been back to class since moving but it inspired me to begin stretching every day as a lifestyle for the rest of my life and I can't stop thinking about going back to class but it's pretty expensive where I'm at.
Welcome back. Nice breakdown and it was hilarious when you said here are top grapplers and here's you. Lol. We all have a different journey and should strive to be the best we can be.
5:58 that doubt is something that's been constantly in myself for the last two months. I've been practicing BJJ for a year and 3 months now, got my stripes and can handle myself well I think. I got mauled pretty bad like a month or two ago and last week I rolled with one of my coaches and of course I'm not expecting to beat him or even be in a dominant position but I wasn't gonna be submitting, keep my arms in, tuck my neck, but regardless of my defense he picked me apart like nothing I felt like a baby not being able to even defend myself and he was going easy and slow against me. Made me feel like I haven't really learned anything it's kinda disheartening but this video actually made me feel better and that this is just part of the journey thanks man.
Really good video, man. I'm five years in and close to my purple. This was pretty spot on. Never experienced any blue belt blues, though. If you're truly in it for the love of the sport, I don't think you will.
Three minutes in to the video, I was going back to my first day in Bjj. I had the same doubts , was thinking that i may say or do goofy/stupid stuff - wich indeed i did as usual - . I saw in some peoples eyes , they were telling me '' you do not belong here fella'', but not the Trainer. Back then i did knew better , but i saw him sitting by the side and he wasnt even looking at me, so i thought ill be nice and ask him if he wanna roll :D . He looked at me like "you for real bro? ", i couldnt sort his facial expression back then but now i know what it ment. He looked at me like " Man i dont wanna roll with the new guy, i dont wanna get hurt '' , but he still accepted just to be kind to me and because hes that type of carrying person. After the roll he was the one who told me '' you'll be alraight, just come to class'' and from that day on NoGi Grappling/Gi Jiu jitsu got me hooked. 4 years forward, i still roll with my first Trainer - although he's not my Trainer anymore - i still roam around our local Openmats and and see all the faces that welcomed me on the mats on my first day of jiu jitsu. They probebly dont even know how important they were in my Bjj journey. Looking back , this time past by so fast, i saw so many people come and go , made so many new friends through jiu jitsu by visiting Gyms and Competitions. WHAT I ACTUALLY TYING TO TELL IS : Like @BJiuJitsuTV sayd in this video NO MORE EXCUSSES, i was scarred to but the only time i felt such camaraderie like in Jiu Jitsu i only experienced in the military . So nothing to be scared of. Go out and try it . It may not be for you , but atleast you tried . Thank you for the great video!!
First, thanks for watching the video. I really appreciate it... As far as you having memories that go that far back is something I can relate to too. I can still remember who tought certain classes when I learned certain moves etc. But yea, it's crazy hoe BJJ brings ppl together and keep us together on the mats every day. Again, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed!
Just keep showing up. It'll get fun in about 6 months or so. That's when the brand new ppl start coming in and you have the experience over them. Congrats on starting tho. That's a big step
Only took up BJJ one month ago at forty four.ignored the voice in my Head saying I'm to old,or I shouldn't do it because of My type one diabetes. I'm on a no gi beginners program don't even have a belt yet.thanks for sharing your thoughts with us my focus was to become a blue belt and see but now I'll just enjoy learning and have fun and see what happens. Thank you.👍🥋
Needed this. I'm 30 yrs old, work and go to school AND I'm a single mom loll. But im so eager to learn. I've been interested for years and finally decided to do it. I'm at the end of my 2nd month of bjj and got one stripe on my white belt. Some days I feel so defeated but still empowered. Some days I'm nervous to go in. I'm nervous to waste my instructors time and shame him lol. But I still go, because if I don't I know I'll never get better and the shame will only grow larger. I dont want to quit. I have to get better. I don't even think about the color of the belt I have. My first goal is making my technique better and working on my cardio. Again, thanks for the reminder.
Sounds like you have alot on your plate but you're taking it well. The best thing you said was you don't even worry about the color of your belt! That's the hardest mindset for alot of ppl to get to. I say just enjoy the journey and have fun and learn. Thanks for watching too ✊
Great video and that journey reflects a lot of our journeys. I’m a blue belt for about 2/3 years and you are right man. Tap some. Get tapped. Get the blues. Start getting reactionary but we def got to create the best version of our self. Thank you for sharing your journey brother. Osss 🤙🏾
Awesome video really helps sometimes when you get down at bluebelt and you realize it's part of growth and the process of becoming better great to see a new video from ya hope there's more to come
Bro I competed 3 months in and got SMASHED, but it was the best thing I did for my Jiu Jitsu. Seeing the speed and intensity really opened my eyes to productive training. And I have seen that focusing on the belts and stripes is pointless. Focusing on daily improvement is the key!
Iam just starting my journey. Month in, and I still feel like its my first day sometimes. It can be a bit hard mentally especially since I am the smallest guy there and also an out of shape 38 year old. I refuse to quit, I hope I can keep that attitude.
On a good week I'd train 3 days a week. I think that's a good amount of training for someone who's got a day job/family/other life responsibilities lol... As far as the hours I'm not sure but I got promoted after about 6 years or so
Excellent storytelling. Such an accurate rep of what it’s really like.

I can still remember who tought certain classes when I learned certain moves etc. But yea, it's crazy hoe BJJ brings ppl together and keep us together on the mats every day. Again, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed!
Great video man.. everything you said was so true..My goal is just not to quit. Thanks for the inspiration brotha 🙏
Just keep showing up. It'll get fun in about 6 months or so. That's when the brand new ppl start coming in and you have the experience over them. Congrats on starting tho. That's a big step
I got my blue belt this morning after 4 years at white belt. It felt strange going from and old worn out belt to a brand new stuff belt.
Keep it up and next thing you know that purple one is coming lol. Congrats
Thank you much. Stay safe brah
Awesome video. I just came from my 20th class. Started in February 🥋
Awesome video 🤙🏼
Great job, bro. You did a great job. You got my subscription.
Hey you’re back 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Awesome video, brother! Stay safe and looking forward to watching videos when you’re back rolling.
Glad you're back!
Thank you sharing
Great video! I’m a month into it and fully addicted! Jiujitsu has already changed my life for the better!
I loved watching this video!
Thanks for watching too ✊
@@BJiuJitsuTV thank you! I'll will!
This is a beautiful video. Thank you.
Glad your back! Love the new format OSS!
Excellent video!
Great video, 4 stripe white about to do my first comp and the feelings are so on point.
great video and story.
Great video. Well narrated and produced. I really enjoyed it!
Great to see you back!
Great video bro. Happy to see other brothers practicing BJJ
Great video and that journey reflects a lot of our journeys. I’m a blue belt for about 2/3 years and you are right man. Tap some. Get tapped. Get the blues. Start getting reactionary but we def got to create the best version of our self. Thank you for sharing your journey brother. Osss 🤙🏾
great video
Awesome video. New white belt here.
Stay with it no matter what! ✊🏾... thanks for watching
This was awesome!!!! Great work. Good to see you on here again.
Awesome video. Well done.
Thanks
Cool journey. Watching this makes me want to start over and do it all again!
This was a dope non training video! Props to u!
Thanks. I appreciate it. Took a lot of time to do!
Sick video, man - was that Josh Palmer at the end, too? One of the only BJJ commentators who doesn't make me mute an event
Lmao yea. I got a chance to roll in philly when he was a brown belt and I was still a white belt. But thanks for the comment.
Wow! This is incredibly well narrated and put together. Subbed - No pun intended.
Awesome video really helps sometimes when you get down at bluebelt and you realize it's part of growth and the process of becoming better great to see a new video from ya hope there's more to come
I appreciate the comments. I am starting to get back to training and posting soon ✊🏾
Really well done video dude, great job 🤙 🥋
Nice work.
Than you for this video. I have had 3 lessons so far. Started at 295 lbs. I'm optimistic for my future in the way of BJJ
I'm glad every time I hear someone a actually started... just keep showing up and enjoy the ride bro.
I love this video bro.
So much yes.
Congratulations porra! And thanks for the video!
Nice video hope you keep bringing content
Good to see you back again! Great video, surprised it didn't have more views! Your narrated rolling videos are also great and very helpful.
Beautiful film!
Thanks man
3 stripe blue here 🙋🏻♂️ 4 years in
Bro I competed 3 months in and got SMASHED, but it was the best thing I did for my Jiu Jitsu. Seeing the speed and intensity really opened my eyes to productive training. And I have seen that focusing on the belts and stripes is pointless. Focusing on daily improvement is the key!
Glad you're finally back bro
Nice vid man!!!!
I'm the 1k like, thanks for the info man🤙
.. And then there is you.. ahahaha spot on dude.
Iam just starting my journey. Month in, and I still feel like its my first day sometimes. It can be a bit hard mentally especially since I am the smallest guy there and also an out of shape 38 year old. I refuse to quit, I hope I can keep that attitude.
great video!
Appreciate it! Took a lot of time and effort
amazing video. where do you train?
7:36 *"Dear Blue Belts - Steve OG", Chewie's vid **3:23**, **4:18* 😁

Damn this vid made me miss the mats soooo much
This is dope
This video is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dope video
Thanks Josh. Appreciate it
Best of all time is easy. Rickson Gracie.
Congrats
I have the blue belt blues thanks for helping me get my ass back on the mats!
DOPE!!!!!!
Just got my second stripe on my white…so I’ll be there soon lol
How many classes and open mats do you attend a week. Also, how many hours did it take you from blue to purple?
On a good week I'd train 3 days a week. I think that's a good amount of training for someone who's got a day job/family/other life responsibilities lol... As far as the hours I'm not sure but I got promoted after about 6 years or so
9:13 *for me that's SIDE CONTROL!! I hate that!!*
