  • Akala (born Kingsley James McLean Daley) is an award-winning hip-hop artist, writer, and poet. He has not only toured with the likes of Jay-Z, Nas, Damian Marley, and Christina Aguilera, he is also well-known for his writing and lectures about the effects of colonial racism and classism in modern society.
In 2009, he founded The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company, a music theatre production company aimed at exploring the social, cultural, and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and modern day hip-hop artists. His TEDx Talk on Shakespeare and hip-hop has received more than 1.3 million views. In 2018, Akala published his first book, Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire, which is about race and class in Britain.
In this episode of Equity Talks, Dr. Kamau Bobb, Google's Global Lead for Diversity Strategy sits down with Akala to discuss his life growing up in London and why Britain needs to do more to acknowledge its imperial history.
The Equity Talks series is a global forum offering an in-depth study of justice through forthright discussion. By amplifying some of the most important voices of our time, our goal is to encourage introspection, conversation, and personal growth.
