The purest point guard of all time. He should be called the blueprint.

@John doue Quebec The question comes down to what is the core of a point guard. Defensively you want someone that would fight around screens, be a hard nose defender and to get steals from good reads, not trying only to get that. That pretty accurately describes Stockton.
Offensively, it's more subjective, if we are taking this as a pure point guard then you are looking for someone who is a willing and efficent passer that makes lots of consistently good passes, having a career assist to turnover ratio of 3.72. He ran the offense well, something you would hope from a pure point guard, and when he was shooting he was efficent (from all places on the floor as well).
But what about a more shooting oriented point guard, well he still shows some of the fundementals of how to be an effective on ball point guard. In that way you could see him also as a blueprint, someone to look at and try and integrate what they were good at into your own game.

Gotta love how he stole the ball right after the missed dunk by K. Malone and the unnecessary extra pass by J. Malone and dished the assist...
And by the way let's never forget that Stockton holds not only the record for the number of assists, but for the steals too... and he has the best shooting percentage for a guard! And yes he could dunk the ball :D That man was a beast!

stockton busts out 12-15 assists on an average day. that just doesnt happen anymore. "stockton to malone" was probably the three most used words in the NBA in the 90s.

The greatest thing about Stockton's passes were that they were always in the flow of the game, and within the offense, and not forced like some of today's PGs that just try and rack up assist numbers for their stats.

And what a block from Stockton on Robinson. 1991 Stockton was so much faster and played more minutes. Cant believe this team couldnt win first playoff series against Warriors I think.

    T. Bailey's still with the Jazz, so this should be from 90-91 season. As a Skiles fan, I don't argue on which one's better. Two PGs had completely different supporting casts. Partially I see that the Magic got lucky with Denver filled with so many injuries that year, and teams went to OTs. Denver's starting big men were pretty sad that day. Skiles also got lots of help from some unsung names like Jerry Ice Reynolds. Without those difficults shots, assists wouldn't have been completed.

That game didn't go OT. Sorry. This game's from Jan. 15, 1991, Utah won by 22. At that point, SAS was at 24W-8L but had to go w/o Terry Cummings that day. Greenwood and S. Green absolutely struggled against Mailman...

They say “ back in the day was tougher to play in than these days” 🤣…. Looks about the same to me bro. Same kinda non existent defense as now. How many times did Stockton pick the ball up after dribbling and no one tried to strip the ball and let him pass it cmon. Steph would’ve killed defense like this. And the athleticism ain’t even close to now. These days everyone is fast and strong. At one point Stockton was on the break and a spur was steps behind him and gave up, these days they definitely challenging that 100%. I see a lotta lazy play I don’t see today or they’ll be benched. And shot making abilities these days are next level, current nba players take the game serious these dudes was smoking after games and getting drunk.

+bernard james It's all about Bball IQ and accuracy. Caling the right plays, waiting for the right time, controling the tempo, dominating on defense, Stockton did all that with a pokerface every night. He was like a general commanding his troops.
