This is an awesome 3 vid story. I'm fascinated by the culture. I've live around the world and I have yet to find better, friendlier people and weather than mid to southern Mexico. It's true, they rather deprive themselves from something than inconvenience you. They have their hardships like we all do. But they sure live a more positive life. Friendship is paramount and when you make one it usually lasts a lifetime in Mexico over almost anything. To think that these same people are treated so unfairly and unjustly in the States, today. Many return to Mexico with resentment and it shows in the younger generations. If we could just treat each other the way they do when we are their guests, our world would be just that much more enjoyable. Beautiful series of vids!
You must have a great rapport with the people for them to allow you to film so closely. I watched all three parts and felt it was a wonderful representation of the culture as well as the individual personalities. I was truly humbled. Thank you for posting.
they may be poor but they have a better life then a middle class family. they don't worry about the silly things in life just the important ones. I can't wait til I move to mexico. it will be awesome.
Destany Anaksanamun my friend, they are rich. I am they, they are me. This is the secret to our culture, the ability to easily see one in another. This part of the consciousness of I, or the collective agreement as a society, is still very much a part of what is left of our humanity. Speaking of course as a part of said society.
Girl ima be moving also. Im 26 now and ima start visiting down there for weeks at a time, then in like 10 yrs ill leave this bitch. Lol see ya there fam...

This is a very good series. You do very good work. Great documentary work. I could not stop watching. These are very hard working people. I am fascinated by their lifestyle. They have very little money and material things but seem fulfilled with their daily activities. Simplicity is awesome. I feel guilty having retired at 56.
beautiful documentary :') I travel to mexico a few times a year and see a lot of the same hospitality from the locals. dorsnt matter what they have they are always willing to share and tell about how life in mexico is. i love it!
Karl, thank you, i really enjoy your film . very well done. to see this give's me so much to be thankful for. i am second generation mexican american. aloha and god bless.
Karl. First of all Thank you so much for the wonderful work. This brought me so many great memories. Growing up in ? Mich Mex.....it was like my own story..
Beautifully done! Wish there was more time with each person/family. You have a way of filming/moving slowly at the pace of the people. Most would have cut the scenes much shorter, but would have lost much. The people are very rich, just like the people in a tiny mountain village I visited in 1992 on a medical trip to the state of Hildalgo. My perspective on life and possessions drastically changed. Now, I visit Mexico often and many years ago reduced my lifestyle down to the basics. My Mexican "family" is so kind to me and share all that they have. I try to compensate, but get so much more than I receive. I so wanted to give the woman a tortilla press, but perhaps she takes pride in the way she presses them by hand and would be hurt that I am suggesting they are not good enough.
I am a self employed contractor in New York state, I would trade my life to a similar life of these people. $50K cars or more, $250K for a modest home, $15K in property tax per year. Grocery store junk food with preservatives and the stress of corporate America. I can't wait to move to Mexico.
Most people find it hard to believe, the same was true in the US until the 1930s/40s. Many rural areas did not have running water and electricity because of the difficulty in getting it to them.
And now some cities in Trumpland have piped running water enriched with lead, arsenic, and other beautiful chemicals coming from the old pipes and oil fracking industry! Great!
This is a great video series! I'm studying to become a teacher right now, and I am seriously considering using these in my classes someday. Thanks for posting this.
Pay attention to what she's doing at 4:20, I only watched upto 5:25, thus far. I asked myself, I wonder how many of the people who have, are, and will watch this, have actually seen this being done. She's making tortillas, corn, and nixtamal.
This was a WONDERFUL documentary! I highly respect the Mexican people and their culture. They value FAMILY and they work so hard. I'm sure that their life expectancy is much higher than in the U.S. Americans could learn some lessons from the Mexicans. That food looked good, too....so fresh and nutritious! Thanks for posting.
Wow, what an amazing mini doc! Wish there was more, but this is amazing! I dont want to see cabo or the resort areas. I want to see the real Mexico. Great job!
God bless these people for hard work with little to show for it after years and years. I enjoyed your series on the people in Mexico. Another reason why I say when people complain and complain of how bad life is in America but have no idea what they have to be grateful for. A spoiled society indeed....
When I was young I was also taught that this is poor, but decades later I have learned that living a simple life is not poor. Living peacefully with family, surrounded by love is a full life!
This is just about the way it was during and especially before my time growing up in Mississippi. The term Ho-cake was used for a homemade pancake made from water, flour, baking soda, in Mississippi. That same term pronounced the same way is used today for pancake in Spanish, amongst many.
Eugene Allison 10-4 Well Ho-Cakes are still alive and well here in Mexico. Really they are made about the same way as real Mexican Tortillas. Taste pretty close to the same. If you’re hungry enough, you’ll put syrup or anything on them and eat them. Some Mexicans now days still drink sugar water. Very old fashioned. 😔
"I realized they'd be the last generation in ______ Guerrero to be able to remember a time when water had to be fetched from the river and when the only light at night was from a candle" Brilliant!
awesome series.. the quality of meat in the ranches is top notch.. reminds me of when i visited family in Michoacan... we grilled the freshest meat ive ever ate.. the beef was soooooo tasty.. it was so fresh and out of the norm of the meat im used to in the USA that i ended up getting stomch cramps from not being used to meat that fresh... but best beleive the next day we grilled up some more and luckily my body was acclimated :)
Karl Knapp this is awesome, I am not Mexican but I love them, hospitality everywhere, man if you are not in the seventh art (Cinema)you are a born genius with unlimited potential!
Just as nice as the last one I watched. It makes me appreciate all the luxurys we as Americans enjoy. That is unless you are one of the millions of homeless. It makes me wonder how much of a problem homelessness and hunger is south of the boarder down Mexico way.
Great videos Knappers! I watched all 3. Well done! Enjoyed the music at the end of #3. I don't remember hearing it in #1 & #2. I'll watch them again and listen more carefully. You should watch YT video on making your own steady-cam device for $10. It's easy, just a pipe with a weight on the bottom. and your cam on top. Would give your videos an extra polish. Don't worry about the cat! It's plenty of mices and other small animals he can caugh for meals! And the same for the dog. I was born and grown in a very poor Mexican farm, an I can assure you that the cats and dogs there are way more free and happy than any lazy and fat cat and dog in gringoland.

Karl, What items would be helpful for such a Mexican family? I am learning Spanish so that I may migrate there. I would like to have really appropriate gifts to help them out. I love Mexico.

Last time I was in southern Mexico farmers were so worry about Monsanto destroying their corn crops and being forced to pay royalties to buy seeds. I hope they were able to kick them out but without government help it is almost imposible to fight this transnational corporation.
