  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge is located in Baltimore, Maryland and carries I695. The bridge was struck by a container ship on or about 1:30 AM on March 26th.
The first piece of misinformation about the bridge occurred at 6:33 AM, Mar 26, 2024 by Indian Defense Analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra.

The tweet has since been copied and shared multiple times over the past few hours with inauthentic and AI accounts taking over to increase engagement.
This kind of misinformation is very dangerous because it "feels" true and that can be exploited by disinformation agents to twist the video's meaning.

25 year professional, unlimited tonnage deck officer here. If you watch to whole video, the ship loses power, the first time, with over 4 minutes before the allision. Even the navigation lights turned off so that tells me they weren't using the emergency generator at that time. The nav lights and a steering pump are on the emergency power circuit. It took a minute for power to return and the nav lights turned back at that time. Which tells me that the emergency generator didn't automatically turn on for a minute. That's too long. Once the power is restored, the ship is already starting to drift to stbd, toward the bridge pier. Black smoke billows out of the stack 20 seconds later which could be the crew putting the engine in reverse. But more likely, it was the crew restarting the main engine after it crash stop. Black smoke like that is common during the restart after a crash stop of the engine. At this point they have less than 3 minutes to stop. Without the engine, it's impossible. The Pilots, Captain and crew could have done everything right but a total power failure at that critical point, they were screwed. Human error? Yes! Everything is traced back to human error, but it doesn't have to be malicious intent.

Thanks so much for the insight from somebody who clearly knows what they’re talking about as opposed to a bunch of news anchors who couldn’t row a rubber dinghy around the pond in the local park. It looks a right mess to cleanup obviously the first job is going to be to fish out any bodies they can find do the investigations but also can you imagine it’s gonna be a right mess getting all the parts of the bridge out of the river so they can reopen the channel and even then they gotta figure out how the hell they’re going to Get the bridge back whole thing or they rebuild it. Do they put in a tall bridge to allow more shipping to come underneath or do they have a suspension bridge?
In your opinion, what would be a better solution? Modern shipping a suspension bridge or a much taller bridge? And how do you think they will improve the pe to make them more resistance to collections please?

I work in microbial ecology. You have no idea how right you are. If there's one thing I've learned in seven years in this field, it is that cooperation and interesting behavior only occurs in systems that have spatial structure where organisms interact most strongly with their neighbors and less strongly with those further away. The instant you have a well-mixed system where every individual interacts equally strongly with every other, it collapses to low complexity and being overrun with antagonistic interactions and parasites. The game theory of cooperation versus antagonism and the payoff matrix of parasitism just changes completely. Sound familiar?

part of the problem is when it becomes apparent that there is a lie being told to explain something. I think the moon landing is a prime example. Instead of simply stating/clarifying that some "mood landing" footage was done in studio as a recreation/representation/practice for mission. By trying to be coy they leave the door open for alternate theories that seem plausible because SOMETHING is fishy. Deception breeds false theories and provides circumstantial "evidence".

0:38 “ship at 11 seconds abruptly changed course”
That phrase demonstrates no understanding of the situation
That ship, any ship of that size, does not “abruptly” change course.
That ship had a pilot aboard who is licensed for that port, who was in command of maneuvers.
Without consulting a tidal chart & table, it looks to me as if may have been a current, and/or wind that carried the ship into the bridge and the ship lacked power at crucial moments when the pilot would have been setting up the ship for a turn.

The ship was under it's own power, not being guided by tugs. When it lost power all hell was breaking lose, they dropped the port side anchor and the one thing they shouldn't have done was back down power and tried to reverse out, that caused the ship to veer out of the shipping channel to it's starboard side and onto a collision path for one of the main support trusses for the bridge. The ship did not have enough room between the bridge truss and itself to stop and it slammed right into it. My dad's first cousin is a Harbor Master Pilot who works the Chesapeake Bay, there were two Harbor Master Pilots on board that ship at the time, I don't believe he was one of them, as of right now no names have been released. But all this was was a tragic accident, no conspiracies, no Tucker Carlson moment here.

thank you. My husband agrees. Many people do not understand that a boat can't just STOP. (same with trains). The puff of smoke might mean someone trying to get the ship to reverse, but things went wrong at a bad time. Also the kind of bridge it is, means each bit depends on the other. An engineer could describe this type of bridge. It all fell down, as one piece fell. Nothing more needed than a large ship hitting just the right spot. Having driven that bridge often, I feel sad that such a vital link in the city is gone. Think of all the traffic that has gone over and under that bridge, and it did a good job for a long time. But nope, things happen is often the best explanation.

    • @redf7209
      @redf7209 Місяць тому +4

I must admit before i saw footage i thought the explanation of power loss might have been an excuse for failure to keep watch properly, ie captain sees that he will hit bridge too late and cuts poer as an excuse. Failure to keep proper watch is the cause of a lot of collisions. That theory doesnt really cut when you see it in real time on video though.

Marine pilot here.. a commercial ship typically has at least 2 layers of emergency backup power supply that automatically activates upon power loss.
First is the emergency generator that will supplement 3 main generators aka auxilliary engines used during pilotted maneuvers (only 2 is used in open sea and another on standby alternately).
Secondly, if all else fail, the battery packs will trigger and has enough power for navigation equipments only.
Im not sure why the blackouts could have any effect to the main engine, as theyre fully mechanically fuel based. I suspect the cause of the power outtage isnt just a wattage overload. The emergency gen probably kicked in before the 2nd blackout.. and the battery packs failed.
Personally, i wouldve dropped anchor immediately to reduce the speed.. but with only a few seconds to spare, its a tough call.
As for the starboard swing, its not suspicious at all, as pilots do try to turn back 180deg while the ship still has momentum, when things go south. And a hard over to starboard is as recommended by the international rule of the road standard.

@@Davey-Boyd after a closer look at the footage, i noticed black smoke from her funnel indicating they prolly revved the engine to full astern movt to stop the forward motion. Most single propeller commercial ships are built with a right handed propeller.. which mean when going astern, the propeller will turn left handed aka counter clockwise. This will dig into the water causing the bow (front end) to veer right, hence the right turning into the bridge pylon. This effect is called the transverse thrust. The stronger the astern propulsion, the faster the right turn.

I have already seen a detailed minute to minute video of both the traffic lanes for the ships as tracked by the harbor as compared to the live feed cameras. The ship changes course after power comes back on but only for one engine. They tried to stop the ship, with only one engine it swung to starboard (the engine now working in reverse and on the opposite side of the smoke plume). This is exactly what to expect if the captain panicked and tried to stop the ship. You cannot stop one of those ships on one engine in the amount of space allowed at the speed greater than 8.5 knots. And that is what the harbor gps tracking shows.
Update: @ScienceChap provided the following ship information:
Nope. The MV Dali has a single 16 cylinder, 55000hp MAN B&W diesel engine turning a single propeller.
This still tracks with the GPS and other data above but proves it was a single engine. The speed reduction still checks, only the lateral movement to starboard has to be accounted for now. Probably (just a wild guess) it had to do with river currents and tide at the time of the incident.

    • @ScienceChap
      @ScienceChap Місяць тому

Nope. MV Dali has a single 55000hp MAN B&W diesel engine turning a single propeller. The master probably did not panic. He tried to deal with the problem. They restored power, put the ship in full reverse and appear to have dropped an anchor in an attempt to stop the ship. The problem is that 100000 tonnes at 8.5 knots is a huge amount of kinetic energy to bleed off, especially in the space allowed. The master was also hamstrung when the power was lost a second time, only coming back on about a minute before the collision. Impossible situation.

The video angles for the live cams do not change. The accident was at night. I can find that info on google maps but did not check it.
The harbor tracking is far more interesting. There are 4 "lanes" for cargo ships. This ship started out in what I will call lane 3 going from the ships starboard as lane 1. After the power comes back on you can see a clear gradual deceleration of the ship prior to impact. Given obvious size/mass and rate of deceleration in addition to the change in course to starboard it fits the starboard engine being in reverse from just after power was restored till impact.
Impact was roughly 7knots give or take. The actual number I saw was higher, but the tracking is slower than the live cam, so it is hard to be sure of the exact speed.

The ship signalled a Mayday and Bridge authorities had time to shut down the bridge entry ramps, prior to the allision. The victims of the collapse were maintenance workers, repairing pot-holes. @@MyFiddlePlayer Well I am not an expert, but it seems to me to be the simplest thing to add safety islands after the fact. And with a port of that size and a bridge that looks to be very important for the local area, it seems like a "no brainer" to pump some sand around the pillers.
Fair it might hard to add a lot of sand between the two pillers, cause the bridge only have 366 m between the pillers. And you don't want passage to be too narrow. Thus there might be a good reason.
But it seems like a good idea to me that you design a safety island around the pillers, and then only allow ships to travel with a speed low enough that the ships momentum can be stopped by the safety island. And the port probably have a pretty good idea about how big of a ship they can handle.
I hope other bridges are checked and retrofitted after this, cause this is horrible, and seems so preventable. 😥

We allow people who have no idea what actually occurred in a given event to automatically label any analysis of that event as misinformation or disinformation.
Perhaps the most dangerous people to western society at-large today are those individuals who label any information as misinformation or disinformation without actually knowing what exactly occurred. It would seem that those people don’t want any critical thinking or analysis of events to occur. As a former Marine Engineer I will tell you loosing power on a vessel under passage will loose you your main engine and your steering. A ship of this size has only one main engine so there’s no standby for that. If you have time and you have power but have lost power to steering this can be activated manually but my impression here is a failure of electrical generation and/or distribution taking out essential pumps and control systems. Your only option is your anchor and only if you have enough room for it to be effective. If I were the Chief Engineer on this one I’d be hoping it was equipment failure and not cost savings otherwise my ass would be grass.

The reason it was uncontrollable is if the main single screw stops turning it acts like a hard-over rudder on its own and blocks most water flow across the actual rudder. The side thrusters (assuming it has them) are run by high energy circuits directly from the main engine systems. Something like 39.8Mj of force.

It's hard enough to pilot one of these behemoths in good conditions, let alone when there is a electric failure. The bridge commands to the rudder system are electric, and although the rudder can usually be more directly controlled from the engine room panel, the bridge to engine communication system likewise needs electric power. And maintenance on these vessels isn't what it could be given the huge lost revenue incurred for every day of down time. Most likely thing is this is just a stupid accident from pushing hardware too hard without adequate maintenance.

My late husband worked for years on river towboats, on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and smaller ones too. While not the same as an oceangoing vessel, the effects of wind and water currents on barges sometimes led to dangerous situations. It was especially true with empties, which have most of their profile above the water line. High winds, fast currents thrown in with a loss of power and things get out of hand quickly. I can absolutely believe this was the result of a series of things going wrong.
